2 Parks and Recreation Board Agenda Item Report Submitted by: Sarah Harris Submitting Department: Parks, Recreation and Facilities Meeting Date: 7/09/2018 Subject: Naming Rights Request Presenter: Sarah Harris Recommendation: Support proposed naming rights for a swing to be installed in Van Lierop Park along the view corridor in honor of Dixie Gatchel, a long-time resident and trail advocate. Background: Bill Hilton, chair of the Friends of the Riverwalk, will present a Naming rights request to name a swing in Van Lierop Park after long time trail advocate Dixie Gatchel. Dixie has been a strong proponent for expanding trails in the region and has been a huge supporter of the Puyallup Riverwalk Trail. The trail being placed in Van Lierop Park is Phase V of the Riverwalk Trail and will be known as the Ernie Bay Connector. Over the past 25 years, Dixie and Ernie worked tirelessly to ensure that the Riverwalk Trail was funded and built. Council Direction: Staff recommend that the Board support the naming rights request. The request will then move forward to the Design, Review and Historic Preservation Board for their consideration. The final step will be the formal review by the City Council. 9 Parks & Recreation Report June 2018 Summer Softball Registration for adult summer softball leagues opened Monday, May 14. Four leagues are already filled with several more leagues filling fast. Registration ends Sunday, June 24 with games starting the week of July 15. Summer Day Camp Registration for summer day camp Yougottawanna (ages 5-13) got underway on Monday, June 26. All weeks are full with 100 campers and a waiting list. We have a fun filled summer with field trips scheduled to: Henry Moses Aquatic Center, Northwest Trek, Bullwinkles Family Fun Center and much, much more! Youth Baseball/Softball The postseason tournaments for the Minors (9 & 10 years old), Majors (11 & 12 years old) and Girls Modified Fastpitch (9 & 10 years old) concluded on Friday, June 22 nd. In the Minors championship game, the Eagles beat the Cardinals 4-2. In the Majors championship game, the Mets beat the Dodgers 3-2 in extra innings. In the Girls Modified Fastpitch championship game, the PCR Bruins beat the Orting Jr Cardinals 7-6 in extra innings. Food Truck Frenzy The Food Truck Frenzy took over Bradley Lake Park on Saturday, June 30 th. Visitors enjoyed food from eleven food trucks selling burgers, barbeque, funnel cake, even alligator! Shows and concerts from Reptile Isle, The Infinity Project and The Retros entertained the crowds while they enjoyed their food. Kids played football, frisbee, tug-o-war, and in an awesome bounce house obstacle course. The showery weather kept the heat away and made for a very pleasant afternoon. The Food Truck Frenzy continues to be a fan favorite and a perfect way to kick off Summer! 9

10 Senior Farmers Market Coupons The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, funded by the US Department of Agriculture and the State of Washington, is coordinated locally by Pierce County Aging and Long-Term care. It provides $40 worth of vouchers to qualifying seniors; the coupons can be exchanged for eligible foods (fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh-cut herbs) at Farmers Markets roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs. On Saturday June 9 th, 250 eligible seniors received the coupons at the Activity Center and are looking forward to visiting merchants form the Puyallup Farmers Market soon. 02B Sugar Free Traci Woodcock, Nutritional Therapist/Certified Holistic Health Coach, provides monthly nutrition presentations at the Activity Center. Traci s nutrition topic in June was titled 02B Sugar Free and the class provided guidance and practical tools to find FREEDOM from a sugar habit. Participants where educated about various nutrients that stop sugar cravings and learned about the effectiveness of crowding out empty calories with nutritious and satisfying foods. The workshop also helped to enlightened why the reason that sugar is so addictive and provided tips on how to regain a healthy balance in one s diet. Pioneer Park Pavilion June was another busy month at the Pioneer Park Pavilion wedding season is most definitely in full swing! The Pavilion hosted the Bethel HS Senior Awards banquet, Puyallup PTA s Golden Acorn Awards event, the Puyallup School District s Advanced Graduation night, two rehearsal dinners, a quinceanera, two different Multicare events, a memorial service and six beautiful weddings/receptions! The Farmers Market continues on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm and is located in Pioneer Park and the Pavilion. The 2018 season runs through October. Upcoming Events SSGT.
