3 Creating a healthier, happier society One walk in the park at a time If you want to add physical activity to your day, walking is a great way to get moving. Palm Beach County offers some of the best places to take a walk. Not only can you get active, you can enjoy the benefits of being outdoors too. For most of us, walking is not new. What's great about walking is it's one of the easiest forms of physical activity. Walking at least 30 minutes a day helps to lower our risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer. It can also help keep our muscles and bones strong, fight off sickness, maintain or lose weight and reduce joint pain. Walking in nature promotes total physical and mental health, and is greatly beneficial for the body and mind. Exercising in a natural setting increases these benefits, so that getting to better health may be just a walk in the park. A variety of health organizations recognize parks and recreation as part of the healthcare system, mainly as a means of providing environments where people can be physically active. Parks offer us free opportunities to get active, which leads to a healthier, happier lifestyle. The opportunity for "green exercise" is an important asset that parks offer. Green exercise is more invigorating and is more likely to increase our frequency of exercise compared to indoor exercise. Green exercise has shown to reduce blood pressure, increase self-esteem, and have a positive effect on mood. Providing health and wellness opportunities is a core service of the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department. Countless miles of scenic, paved multi-use pedestrian pathways and fitness trails, many with exercise stations, can be found throughout your park system. Start exploring today! See pages for a complete list of park locations and amenities. Our research group conducted an extensive literature review on the multiple benefits of parks and trails. The main finding was that a great deal of evidence supports that living near a park can enhance physical, mental, and social health. Those benefits appear to be enhanced if parks are designed to promote physical activity and have sufficient programs to attract high use of the facilities. James F. We liked the facility so much that we are thinking about doing our tournament there again next summer. Lake Lytal Park, I have to say, is a great facility and does a better job at accessibility than our home pitch in Miami. I also wanted to say that the staff working there that day was more than helpful. -Christian S. 4 Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department Leisure Times 2016

Never surf around swimmers and fishermen. Juno Beach Park is unique when it comes to surfing in a guarded area. If conditions are such that it can be safely allowed, signage may be posted at that beach to explain the flag and rules for surfing. While fishing at the inlet, I witnessed a whole new approach by two lifeguards. [They were] putting up flags/signs to warn people where not to swim, keeping the public from getting hit by surfboards, warning people where the current would suck them out past the jetty and in general keeping everyone safe. It was great to see. They are the type of people that make you feel safe. -William B. Visit for detailed leisure activity information. 7
