4 Early Explorers Spanish Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived by sea on September 28, He named the area San Miguel. Cabrillo National Monument

5 Early Explorers and In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino arrived in the area. - In 1769, Father Junipero Serra established the first missionary settlement. - The San Diego Presido, a military outpost of Spanish California, was also established in The town of San Diego grew up at the base of the outpost in the 1820s.

6 Spanish Influences Spanish Period Spanish grew grapes, olives, oranges, lemons and a variety of vegetables. Built small dams and irrigation canals. Introduced cattle, sheep, and horses.

7 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo The treaty was signed Feb 2, 1848 It ended the Mexican-American War ( )

8 State of California was est. in1850 In 1850, the County of San Diego was one of the original 27 counties formed. The 1850 census counted a total population of 2,300 in San Diego. In 1867, Alonzo Horton established a new town on San Diego Bay. Plans for a railroad connection surfaced in However, the first rail lines followed the easy topography route to Los Angeles. The entire county had a population of 8,618 in 1880.

9 Early San Diego County History In 1884, Helen Hunt Jackson wrote the novel Ramona. Intended to be a sort of Uncle Tom s Cabin about Mexican and Yankee mistreatment of the native peoples.

10 Beach and Bay Lifestyles In 1885, a consortium led by Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story purchased a large peninsula in San Diego Bay. In 1888, work began on the Hotel del Coronado.

11 Early San Diego County History In , the Panama-California Exposition was held in Balboa Park. Celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. The San Diego Zoo grew out of temporary display at the exposition.

12 Military/Navy Town In 1796, the Spanish built Fort Guijarros (Fort Cobblestones) at Point Loma. In 1898, San Diego was designated a navy base during the Spanish-American War. In 1908, Teddy Roosevelt s Great White Fleet visited San Diego Bay. Naval Base San Diego is the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet.

14 Mexican Border Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ensured the entire San Diego Bay was acquired. Border of myth and legend emerged between 1918 and 1920 with Prohibition. Tijuana (then called Zaragoza) was little more than a tiny ranching settlement. Today, the San Diego- Tijuana region is one of the largest bicultural, bilingual urban areas.

15 Center for Innovation and Technology In 1903, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography was founded. In 1911, aviator Glenn Hammond Curtiss established a flight school on Coronado North Island. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh s plane the Spirit of St. Louis was built at San Diego s Ryan Aircraft. In the 1960s, biomedical research blossomed with the 1960 opening of the campus of the University of California.

26 2003 Cedar Fire Burned 280,278 acres (1,134.2 km 2 ) Fire Facts 2,820 buildings (including 2,232 homes) Killed 15 people including one firefighter before being contained on November 3, making it the largest fire in recorded California history Witch Creek The fire started in Witch Creek Canyon near Santa Ysabel and quickly spread to San Diego Country Estates, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Escondido. Locals in the San Pasqual Valley area reported wind gusts of over 100 mph (160 km/h). The fire jumped over Interstate 15 and continued west, causing significant damage in Lake Hodges, Del Dios and Rancho Santa Fe.
