The rugged, undeveloped stretch between Yachats and Florence is exceptionally scenic. Heceta Head Lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse on the coast (some say in the country) and Sea Lion Caves is one of the most visited sites in the state. The largest town in western Lane County is Florence, with a population of 7780, situated on a bend of the Siuslaw River. A sandy spit extends a few miles north, separating the town from the ocean. With the river and many lakes nearby, water sports and fishing are very popular. The sand dunes attract many off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts. The sand dunes extend south for approximately 40 miles to Coos Bay and are part of the Oregon Dunes National Rec Area. Oregon Coast Mile-by-Mile Guide 2006/

3 LAKE RD Florence IN THE FALL OF 2004, Florence gained the title of number one retirement community in the United States by Retirement Places Rated. With a population of 7780, Florence has a modern hospital, library, and events center. Old Town is a vibrant riverfront district with many shops, restaurants, and offices and on Hwy 126 just east of town is the newest casino on the Oregon Coast the Three Rivers Casino. A short distance to the north of town are the popular Sea Lion Caves and one of the most photographed sites on the Oregon Coast, Heceta Head Lighthouse. Florence serves as the northern gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, which begins south of the Siuslaw River. Florence is also home to the first designated State Park Dive Park, which is located on the Siuslaw River just off North Jetty Road, and the world s first sand-board park on the north end of town, which includes jumps, rail slides, and 40 acres of private sculpted dunes. For those who enjoy golf, two 18-hole courses, Ocean Dunes and Sandpines, provide plenty of challenge. Avalon Park Pitch & Putt, less demanding, welcomes all skill levels to its 9-hole, par 3 course. Exhibits at the museum cover a range of topics dating to early days of settlement, and the photo collection is exceptional. Open Tuesdays through Sundays, Siuslaw River The river is navigable about 15 miles inland to Mapleton. It is popular with both sports fishermen and crabbers. The Siuslaw Bridge was one of five major bridges built in 1936, and like the others, replaced ferry service across the river. 8 191.7 Oregon Dunes National Rec Area The Oregon Dunes NRA extends from Florence to Coos Bay with many access points off Hwy, and the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center is in Reedsport. All sites in the Oregon Dunes NRA require a Northwest Forest Pass ($5/day or $30/year). The pass is accepted at all National Forest day-use fee sites within Oregon and Washington. The Oregon Dunes NRA also accepts the Oregon Coast Passport ($10/5 days or $35/year). For information or to purchase one of the passes, visit the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center (milepost 211.4) or any other U.S. Forest Service office. For campsites accepting reservations, visit or call Advance reservations are necessary during summer holidays and are recommended at all times South Jetty Road Less than a mile south of the Siuslaw River Bridge, South Jetty Road heads west from Hwy into the dunes. A popular OHV staging area is located in the shadow of the towering dunes. Just before the foredunes, the road turns north. Several parking areas on South Jetty Road provide easy access to the beach. Surfers and windsurfers often use this as a staging area, and out near the jetty people catch crabs off the pier in season. Northwest Forest Pass required Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park This 522-acre park, named after an early proponent of the state parks system, is open year round. The 355 campsites (168 with utility hookups) plus 10 yurts are on the reservation system. Honeyman includes three lakes: Woahink Lake, just south of Florence is a great lake to take a swim. 12 whose ship was wrecked near here in Douglas County maintains a boat ramp on the river; there is limited adjacent parking. A walking tour encompasses historic houses, a pioneer cemetery, and the little Episcopal Church overlooking the city. Early signs of an artistic community have been seen. The old Gardiner General Store now shows the works of bronze sculpture Smith River The Bolon Island Boat Ramp is maintained by Douglas County. The Smith flows into the Umpqua about 100 yards downstream Umpqua River Among Oregon rivers, the Umpqua is second in size to the Willamette, and is navigable by fairly large vessels as far upstream as Scottsburg. The Umpqua River bridge is the state s largest swing span bridge and was designed by McCullough when he realized that the crossing here was too wide for a drawbridge Hwy 38 Junction Take Hwy 38 east along the Umpqua River through historic Scottsburg and Elkton. On the reservation system. The loop rejoins Hwy at milepost Winchester Bay Wayfinder Point This is a good place to see the mouth of the Umpqua and the lighthouse. There is ample parking and interpretive signs DOUGLAS/COOS COUNTY LINE COOS COUNTY, WITH 1629 square miles and a population of about 62,000, extends from north of Lakeside to south of Bandon. North of Coos Bay, the dunes are the dominant feature west of the highway and have several access points. Between Winchester Bay and Coos Bay is Lakeside. Turn inland at milepost 222 for the main part of the town as well as for great fishing and boating on Lakeside s Tenmile Lakes, the most used body of water in the county. When you cross Coos Bay on the McCullough Bridge, you leave the dunes behind. Coos Bay is the name of both the estuary of several rivers and the largest city on the coast. North Bend blends seamlessly into its southern neighbor Coos Bay, which has tried unsuccessfully for half a century to persuade North Bend to consolidate with it. Together these two cities support quality medical facilities, a municipal airport, a large indoor shopping mall, a community college with culinary institute, and a wide variety of cultural venues. To visit the fishing village of Charleston, head west following signs Coos County through city streets to Cape Arago Hwy. Charleston is the gateway to three beautiful state parks and Bastendorff Beach County Park. South of Coos Bay is the Hwy 42 turnoff inland to Coquille, the county seat, and 9 miles farther is Myrtle Point, home of the county fairgrounds. If you turn south off Hwy 42 to Powers, you will be at the gateway to Siskiyou National Forest. About 20 miles south of Coos Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the coast Bandon. The scenic harbor, offshore rocks, Old Town, and great restaurants make it easy to see why. It is also known as the Cranberry Capital of Oregon. For more county information, contact the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, William M. Tugman State Park Located on Eel Lake east of the highway, Tugman has picnic facilities and 102 campsites with water and electricity. Facilities include 13 yurts and sites for RVs, as well as a hiker biker camp. Some sites on the reservation system. The Cape Arago lighthouse is more than 2 miles northeast of the cape. The island on which it sits and the mainland reservation are off-limits to the public. However, good views can be had from the pullout west of Sunset Bay State Park. A number of overgrown paths cross the bluffs on both sides of Sunset Bay and lead to closer views. Be advised that dangerous clay and sandstone cliffs here can give way at any time. Also be careful not to stray onto private property or the Coast Guard reservation. Photo by Steve Beckner Oregon Coast Mile-by-Mile Guide 2006/

Port Orford is the oldest platted townsite on the South Coast, Gold Beach is the county seat, and Brookings is the largest town. Between towns look for shops with myrtlewood products. Rare myrtlewood trees grow along the South Coast and into coastal Northern California. Port Orford, with a history that dates to 1851, is a good place for whale or storm watching. Port Orford is the only port in Oregon right on the ocean and not in a protected bay. A unique feature is that boats are lifted onto the dock, rather than moored in the water. Gold Beach on the Rogue River is touristfriendly with jet boat rides, year-round fishing, and several resorts.you can drive inland as far as Agness on paved roads. The fairgrounds in town, known as The Event Center at the Beach, is the location for many events during the year. Brookings bills its location as the Banana Belt and on many days the weather in town really is warmer than elsewhere on the coast. Chetco River, between Brookings and unincorporated Harbor, is not as well known as the Rogue, but locals and visitors alike come for great boating, fishing, and swimming. 31 memorates the 1856 Battle of Pistol River Pistol River to Carpenterville Road Start here for a driving adventure on a paved back road that runs roughly parallel to Hwy and rejoins it north of Brookings at milepost Not advisable for RVs Samuel H. Boardman State Park Boardman is a long, narrow park consisting primarily of about 12 miles of rugged coastline and pocket beaches. Several viewpoint waysides have picnic tables. The principal ones are Arch Rock Point, Thunder Rock Cove, Natural Bridges Cove, North Island Trail, Indian Sands Trail, Whalehead Trail, House Rock, Cape Ferrelo, Lone Ranch, and Rainbow Rock. The beach at Thunder Rock Cove is considered one of the best of the sheltered beaches, or bikini beaches, on the coast. Look for wild goats. The portion of the Oregon Coast Trail that runs through Curry County begins at Cape Ferrelo and ends at Humbug Mountain State Park. The entire coast trail provides more than 300 miles to hike Thomas Creek Bridge The highest bridge in Oregon crosses 345 feet above creek bottom. Built in 1964, the bridge is supported by two steel legs. To appreciate the structure s magnitude, pull into the parking area at the bridge s south end. Follow a short trail west for the best look at the gigantic geometric steel legs supporting the bridge Pistol River Carpenterville Road South Access This is a paved back-road adventure that loops back to milepost Harris Beach State Park Named for George Harris, a pioneer from Scotland who raised sheep and cattle here, Harris Beach has 150 campsites as well as picnic facilities. The largest island of the Oregon Coast, Bird Island, is a breeding place for a variety of birds, including tufted puffins. Across Hwy is the State Welcome Center and Rest Area. Restrooms are open year-round but the visitor center is closed in winter months. Wireless Internet access is provided Brookings Harbor (ZIP 97415) See city page Central Mall The Oregon and California Lumber Company (O&C) ran Brookings as a company town in the early part of the 20th century. The Central Building, constructed in 1915 by O&C, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A small museum of local history is in the basement Chetco River A modern four-lane highway bridge spans the Chetco River, which divides Brookings from its unincorporated neighbor Harbor. The North Bank Road goes up the Chetco River to nearby Azalea Park and 10 miles farther to Alfred A. Loeb State Park. The state park has 50 campsites and 3 cabins and is near a trail through a redwood grove. On the south side, South Bank Road leads inland to Salmon Run Golf Course. The 18-hole course was constructed to preserve the environment as much as possible. A meandering stream has numerous bridges and is the biggest hazard for golfers. Salmon actually do inhabit the golf course. Lower Harbor Road reaches the Port of Brookings Harbor. Port facilities include a marina, port-operated RV park, a boardwalk, and shops. The chamber of commerce building is well marked and offers both advice and brochures for visitors Chetco Valley Historical Museum The museum is home to the state s largest Monterey cypress, which was planted in the 1850s. From the town of Smith River near the Oregon state line to the Klamath area near its southern end, Del Norte County is recreation oriented. Two major rivers, the Smith and the Klamath, flow into the Pacific. The Smith River National Rec Area includes the river s three forks. Redwood groves of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park along Hwy 199 and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park along Hwy create scenic corridors along the county s major highways. 33 Del Norte County, CA Crescent City CRESCENT CITY IS the gateway to the Smith River National Recreation Area. The visitor center at the Redwood National and State Parks headquarters is worth a stop before exploring the redwoods. The nearby Smith River Scenic Byway follows one of the largest Wild and Scenic River Systems in the United States. St. George s Reef Lighthouse lies six miles off Point St. George at the northeast corner of the Crescent City. A scenic drive extends along the oceanfront all the way into the center of the city. It passes Pebble Beach and the municipal airport, and the Castle Rock National Wildlife Refuge offshore. Closer to downtown, Battery Point Lighthouse is on an island so close that it is accessible by foot at low tide. Crescent City s harbor supports both commercial and sport fishing vessels. The city s namesake Crescent Beach extends in a broad crescent to the south. A tsunami struck Crescent City after the great Alaska earthquake of 1964 and destroyed the business district. Evidence of it can still be seen and its memory is preserved in the many local names incorporating the word Tsunami. Elk Valley Casino, nestled in the redwoods on the edge of Crescent City, offers a festive gaming experience. Nearby is the public 18-hole Del Norte Golf Course, Tsunami Lanes state-ofthe-art bowling alley, and the Tsunami Sports Bar and Grill for viewing premier sporting events. Visit the Historical Society Museum s Tolowa and Yurok Indian artifacts and original lens from the St. George Reef Lighthouse, and also visit the Marine Mammal Center, one of three rescue and rehabilitation centers in California.
