5 Connecticut is in what is known as the New England Region of the northeast states in the United States of America. Connecticut is bordered by three states and one sound. The three states include: New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The sound that borders Connecticut is the Long Island Sound. ~Using the map above write the initials of Connecticut (CT) on the correct state using a blue marker or crayon. With a green marker or crayon label the state of New York (NY). With a purple marker or crayon label the state of Massachusetts (MA). With a yellow marker or crayon label the state of Rhode Island (RI). With a red marker or crayon put the name LONG ISLAND SOUND beneath the southern part of Connecticut. You will need to draw an arrow to it as it is not a large enough space to write in. Cut out the map and place into your lapbook where shown on the direction page.~

6 Read the facts about Connecticut and then create a window wheel for your lapbook. Cut out the circles and then cut the window out of the second circle. Place second circle on top of first circle and attach with a brad through the center. The name Connecticut comes from the Mohegan word Bridgeport is Connecticut s largest city. quinnitukqut. When folded, glue the back of your matchbook into your mini lapbook where shown on the direction page. Adhere the corresponding picture on the outside of the matchbook. Connecticut s state bird is the gorgeous American Robin. This bird is one of America s most favorite songbirds. The American Robin was named after the robin red-breast of Europe for their similarities. These birds are very common to backyards and can be seen after a rainstorm searching for worms. Connecticut s state tree is the Charter Oak Tree. The Charter Oak was a 200 year old white oak tree that fell during a great storm in This tree was and is remembered as a symbol of the love of freedom that inspired our colonial ancestors to fight for liberty. The Praying Mantis is Connecticut s state insect. This predatory insect is most often green or brown in color. It is known for its stealth as it patiently waits for its prey. It will wait perfectly still with its front arms together (like it is praying) for the moment it will strike. Connecticut s state flower is the Mountain Laurel. It is also called spoonwood because Native Americans would make spoons from its wood. These gorgeous flowers are pink and white and star-shaped. This evergreen shrub has been the official flower since 1907.

8 The grapevines have a Biblical meaning taken from chapter 80 starting with verse. The flag was officially adopted in the year. The grapes also represent providence,, and friendship. The Connecticut State Flag is on a field of all blue. BLACK YELLOW PURPLE BLUE Cut out the flag on the solid black lines and tape into your lapbook (where shown on the direction page) along the right, left, and bottom sides. This will create a pocket. Read about Connecticut s state flag below. Outline the banners in the stated color and fill in the word that is missing from the statement. The words can be found in the paragraphs below. Place the banners in order of what was read in the paragraphs and then place them in your flag pocket. Connecticut s State Flag The Connecticut State Flag has a field of all azure blue with the state s coat of arms in the center. It has been the official state flag since It took more than 100 years since Connecticut s statehood to officially adopt a flag. The coat of arms shows three grape vines on a field of white surrounded by the leaves and acorns of the white oak. The grapevines are Biblically symbolic from Psalm 80 starting with verse eight. They represent how the roots began elsewhere but have since been transplanted and now thrive in their new land. The Latin motto on the banner below the shield echo this sentiment: Qui Transtilut Sustinet meaning He who transplanted still sustains. Grapes are also symbolic of providence, peace, and friendship. This castle was built by William Gillette, an American actor, known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. It is part of Gillette Castle State Park and receives well over 100,000 visitors annually. Windham, Connecticut Frog lovers from all over come to the Frog Bridge of Willimantic! Giant frogs atop thread spools greet travelers along the bridge. A fun, must-see in wonderful Connecticut! Read about and look at the pictures of just several popular tourist destinations in Connecticut. Cut out each rectangle and stack onto each other. Start with Places to see in Connecticut and then Dinosaur State Park, Lake Compounce, Mystic Seaport, Essex Steam Train, The Frog Bridge, and on the bottom should be the Gillette Castle. Staple together at the top and place into your lapbook where shown on the direction page.
