FEATURE NEW JERSEY S From our nationally-touted public schools to beloved diners and shore towns, there s no shortage of reasons to love the Garden State. But what makes a New Jersey town an amazing place to live and raise kids? For the third consecutive year, we re answering that question with our annual list of NJ s Best Towns for Families. We ve spent a lot of time looking at things like education, affordability, crime rate, commute time, diversity and access to hospitals. This year, we took an even deeper dive into high school performance and added a new factor into our mix that s exclusive to us and that s how many of NJ s Favorite Kids Docs (chosen by our readers) practice in each town. Check out the top 100 towns on page 31 and go to njfamily.com/besttowns for our full list. * For the complete methodology, visit njfamily.com/besttownsmethodology April 2017 njfamily.com 21

Clinton 2017 Best Town for Families and Best in Hunterdon County ISTOCKPHOTO.COM / KENWIEDEMANN When you picture Hunterdon County, scenic hiking trails, farms and open space likely come to mind, but Clinton, NJ Family s Best Town for Families, marries its rural setting with a quaint downtown straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. For that reason, Sean Rogan, father of four, moved his family to Clinton from Jefferson Township 14 years ago. Clinton is essentially the town center for Northern Hunterdon County, he says. We re surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and the protected farmland of Hunterdon County. Known for its natural beauty, Clinton is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts due to its proximity to Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton Township, a sprawling 1,290-acre park with 15 miles of shoreline. The Round Valley Reservoir in Lebanon, home of NJ s deepest lake, is a perfect spot for hikers, fishers and cyclists alike. There s also Columbia Trail, a 15- mile route for walking and biking in High Bridge. When considering a move, schools are at the top of every parent s list, and the district in Clinton is topnotch. The public school for kids in kindergarten through eighth [grade] is excellent and filled with passionate, caring teachers and administration, 2,710 $364,380 says Rogan. I love that it s a kindergarten through eight system; the older kids look after the younger ones, which really fosters a terrific family-like environment. Once students move on, they attend the highly-touted North Hunterdon High School. Michael Penyak, a father of two who grew up in Clinton, liked it so much he decided to raise his own family there, and its downtown was a big reason why. We decided to move our family to Clinton because we loved the community feel, says Penyak. It s nice to be able to walk downtown and know a lot of the local shop owners. There s never a shortage of things to bring the kids to. There are always programs at the Red Mill Museum, even on rainy days, but my favorite thing to do is sit by the river on Friday nights in the summer. The water is calm enough so the kids can wade in it and almost everyone has an ice cream cone in hand, says Penyak. There s also live music on Friday, so it doesn t get any better than that. There s no other place I d rather be. And the family-friendly fun is year-round, not just in the summer. Rogan recommends watching the St. Patrick s Day or Christmas parades, checking out the apple and pumpkin harvest festivals or going to the rubber ducky race on the river. Entertainment options don t only exist for kids Clinton has a bustling social scene for grown-ups, too. The Clean Plate Kitchen, a favorite farm-to-table spot among the state s food critics, serves up seasonal, unprocessed fare that defines clean eating. Locals also love the Clinton House, a popular mainstay that serves up steak and seafood, and has a connected bakery with an assortment of pies, as well as a variety of restaurants, boutiques and ice cream shops on the main drag. And you can always grab a Taylor ham, egg and cheese or a legendary seven-pound burger (dubbed Zeus) at the Clinton Station Diner, an eatery partially housed in a train car. But the best aspect of Clinton is the people everyone is really friendly and looks out for one another, says Rogan. I can t think of a better place to raise a family. by MURPHY MORONEY April 2017 njfamily.com 23

Glen Rock Best in Bergen County When Amy Matulevich and her husband decided to move to Glen Rock last summer, it was the town s stellar schools consistently ranked among the best in New Jersey that sold them. But they quickly discovered the 2.71-square-mile borough has another huge plus: a warm and welcoming community. People are just so friendly, says Matulevich, whose neighbors welcomed her husband, Steven, and two sons, Maddox, 6, and Kieran, 4, with Prosecco, cookies, a plant and water balloons. When the family made its first snowman of the season, a neighbor drove by with a fedora to top him off. People were driving by and giving us a thumbs up, she recalls. And on Halloween eve, the boys were ghosted with treat bags 11,631 $611,676 outside their front door. On top of its small town community feel and picturesque tree-lined streets, Glen Rock has plenty to offer in the way of outdoor activities, too. The Thielke Arboretum boasts nature trails, gardens, a spring-fed pond and a brook. Part of Saddle River County Park s beloved bike paths lies within the borough. The municipal pool is another huge draw in the summer. Founded in 1894, Glen Rock got its name from an iconic rock monument in the center of town. Local historians say it was part of a Native American trail used for signal fires. Matulevich loves the diversity of downtown eateries and shops, which include Rocca, an Italian favorite, Nectar Cafe, a vegan and gluten-free spot, and Kilroy s Wonder Market, a grocery store that s been a staple in town for more than 100 years. Residents also appreciate the town s convenient location, about 23 miles from Manhattan. My neighbor goes to the city and walks to the bus, says Matulevich. People love the commutability. by DINA EL NABLI PHOTOS COURTESY OF SIMON TOFFELL West Caldwell Best in Essex County Green space abounds in West Caldwell, a small community with strong schools and a diverse recreation program. Adults and kids can take advantage of programs ranging from twirling and wrestling to volleyball and track. The Essex County park system is amazing, said Renee Reithmeier, a 32-year-old engineer who moved to West Caldwell from nearby Montclair with her husband three years ago. Nature lovers particularly enjoy the lush West Essex Park, a 1,360-acre wetlands preserve that runs through West Caldwell and several other towns. The West Caldwell Public Library also offers a wide range of activities for all age groups from storytime and LEGO family night to mahjong and movie screenings. But the real draw for the couple, who has a two-year-old son, was the school district the town shares with Caldwell. The Caldwell- 10,791 $470,216 West Caldwell school district has a reputation for being tight-knit and high-performing. In a nod to the area s rich history, many of the schools bear the names of presidents Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington and Wilson. The middle school is named after President Grover Cleveland, who was born in Caldwell in We wanted to make sure the schools are great and it s really family-friendly here, says Reithmeier. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The leafy suburb is just about 23 miles from New York City. While there s no train service in town, commuters can drive to stops in nearby Montclair (where there s a direct train to Penn Station) or take a New Jersey Transit bus to Newark. Reithmeier says West Caldwell provides the best of both worlds proximity to the city with a small community feel. There s a little downtown area and all these street fairs, she says. On Halloween the children trick-or-treat at the shops. It s really nice. by LISA L. COLANGELO PHOTO COURTESY OF PAMELA PETERSON 24 New Jersey Family April 2017

ISTOCKPHOTO.COM / ANDYKAZIE Secaucus Best in Hudson County Many New Jerseyans know Secaucus as a major junction stop on NJ transit train lines, but this Hudson County gem has so much more to offer than its convenient location. Lisamarie Powers-Tusa grew up in Secaucus and returned years later to raise her two kids, a 10-yearold girl, Kaitlyn, and a 19-year-old boy, Colin, who attends Rutgers University at the Newark campus. We live in a two-family; my brother s family lives upstairs and I m downstairs. My mother lives around the corner, she explains. It s the whole reason I moved back. 16,809 $403,687 Secaucus is packed with activities for all ages, too. With tons of sports, rec programs, parades and festivals, there s always something to do. It s easy to grab drinks with friends or squeeze in a date night on Parent s Night Out. You can drop your kids off at the recreational center for movies and snacks at $5 a head while you go out for a night on the town. Powers-Tusa s daughter s favorite spot is the Craft Clique, founded by a local mom, where kids go to make unique arts and crafts projects. Her son prefers heading to Kane Stadium with friends to throw a baseball around and watch little leaguers play. There are lots of great dining options, too, but Natoli s Deli is a can t-miss. He s got the best pizza and Italian sandwiches ever, raves Powers-Tusa. Thanks to local events that bring the community together, Secaucus is undeniably tight-knit. Your neighbors become aunts and uncles to your kids, explains Powers-Tusa. [They re] always hanging outside, the kids are always playing. It s that kind of neighborhood. by TARYN PIRE Mountain Lakes Best in Morris County PHOTO COURTESY OF MEREDITH DESMOND Mountain Lakes is a picturesque suburb with a small-town feel and plenty of natural beauty. Amid busy highways and bustling municipalities throughout Morris County, this borough is a quiet sanctuary a short drive from large suburban Morristown and a train ride from New York City. Founded in 1910, Mountain Lakes has plenty of historic charm on exhibit via the older homes that dot its residential streets. The Grimes Homestead (a large home that dates back to the 18th century) even served as a station on the Underground Railroad. Though the borough s only 2.85 square miles, it sits on some seriously prime real estate between several man-made lakes. The high school team is appropriately named the Lakers. When it came time to relocate, Erinn Tucker, 4,206 $868,451 a mother of two boys and transplant from Fairfield in Essex County, was quickly sold. This waterfront community is a haven for anyone with a love for the great outdoors. We were drawn to the town because of its top-rated school system and natural beauty, says Tucker. The lakes, hiking trails and tree-covered, winding roads provide for a lot of quality outdoor time with our kids, adds Tucker. Our summers are spent participating on the swim team and taking sailing lessons at the lakes, while sledding and ice skating get us through the winter. Mountain Lakes also has a tremendous sense of community, where no one shies away from lending a helping hand. I really appreciate the old-school values and volunteerism that exists here, says Tucker. Neighbors know each other, help one another out and rally around community members in need. The residents are truly what make this a special place to live and raise children. by MURPHY MORONEY April 2017 njfamily.com 25

West Windsor Best in Mercer County West Windsor, a town with roots that date back to colonial America, was once marked by a bucolic landscape of rolling farmland just north of Trenton. Now it s one of the most desirable towns in the state due to its highly-regarded school district and commuting options to both Philadelphia and New York City. Princeton Junction station, located in West Windsor, is a stop on Amtrak s Northeast Corridor, providing direct access to Washington, D.C. Even though many of its residents are commuters, the town is warm and welcoming, according to Tejal Sughrue who moved to the area with her husband 17 years ago. I never really understood the definition of community, explains Sughrue, who runs a freelance marketing business in the tri-state area. When I came here I felt this sense of community. It was a 27,296 $585,878 small town space that felt like home. The West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District serves kids and teens from both communities and is considered one of the best in NJ. And there s no shortage of activities to keep Sughrue s 12-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son busy. If your kids want to try rowing, there s world class rowing here, Sughrue says. There are soccer fields and two golf courses. Everything is within a five-mile radius. The 123-acre West Windsor Community Park has several facilities including a skate park, dog park, trails, tennis courts and family aquatics center. And there s plenty of shopping on busy Route 1 and in downtown Princeton, which is just across the highway. But residents can also stay close to home thanks to neighborhood supermarkets and convenience stores. Designated bike lanes help kids navigate neighborhoods safely, says Sughrue, and local first responders take time to meet with little ones. Everyone from the police department to the fire department really promotes that sense of community, she says. by LISA L. COLANGELO PHOTO COURTESY OF WESTWINDSORNJ.ORG Plainsboro Best in Middlesex County Plainsboro is a great option for families looking to get away from the hustle and bustle. This suburban community isn t only beautiful, but has tons to offer. Just ask Laurie de Jong, who bought her Plainsboro home in 2002 after living in an apartment there for years. Having moved from New Brunswick, Laurie and her husband Eric list its diversity, open space and peaceful feel as a few of its many pluses. Plainsboro provides numerous opportunities to immerse yourself in different cultures and traditions, says de Jong. I like the small-town feel...there are so many events focused on 22,908 $387,960 family togetherness. While the town is filled with beautiful parks including the 1,000-acre Plainsboro Preserve, which boasts a lake and walking trails residents are still within driving distance to NYC and Philadelphia, and only minutes away from downtown Princeton. Laurie s four children, 10-year-old triplets and an eight-year-old, have tons of fun opportunities in their hometown, plus a great school district. De Jong also loves the year-round programs for kids of all ages offered at the public library. My family takes advantage of the plentiful bike paths, parks (with opportunities to go fishing and boating) and the local youth baseball and softball leagues. De Jong s favorite summer hangout is RedBerry Frozen Yogurt. No matter the season, you ll find RedBerry packed with families after a school play or concert, she says. It s a great place to wind down after a bike ride. by TARYN PIRE PHOTOS COURTESY OF PLAINSBORO TOWNSHIP 26 New Jersey Family April 2017

PHOTO COURTESY OF CINDY MIRONOVICH STAFF PHOTOS Cranford Best in Union County Cranford is a charming and familyfriendly town with the Rahway River flowing from north to south. Once nicknamed the Venice of New Jersey, families riding along the banks of the river in canoes and small boats are common in the summertime. The downtown area s filled with countless upscale restaurants, mom and pop shops and retail stores. Local favorites include Pairings Palate+Plate and Ramola s Seafood & Grille, an elegant Mediterranean BYOB. Dreyer Farm, a fifth generation family-owned farm that offers CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) memberships and is a popular spot for Christmas trees, is beloved among residents. Another plus? The Cranford train station is in the center of town, and commuters have a 40-minute ride to New York City. Recently, luxury apartments popped up across the street from the transit station, bringing young professionals into town. Cranford is a tight-knit community. Despite Sparta Best in Sussex County Located 48 miles from New York City, Sparta is a New Jersey gem. Situated in the Highlands, its rolling hills, wooded areas and 22 lakes provide a spectacular backdrop. Sparta s largest lake, Lake Mohawk, was developed in 1926 when summer homes consisted of Bavarian-style log cabins and rustic cottages. Today, Sparta s many neighborhoods are nestled on quaint streets and cul-de-sacs. Newer, larger homes occupy one-acre lots. Sparta s prestigious Manitou Island homes have impressive square footage and stately curbside appeal. Megan Gibbons returned to her hometown with husband David in 2011 to raise their two sons, Rylan, 10, and Cormac, 8. A 1993 graduate of Sparta High School, her sons now attend the same schools she did. My children are fortunate to receive an excellent education but also have 22,659 having a population of more than 20,000 people, everyone seems to know each other. And with multiple athletic programs, an expansive community center and three public pools, there are plenty of family-friendly things to do. There are tons of activities that are easy to find with social media, says Diane Cruz, a resident and mother of two. The public school system is also a big draw, earning serious kudos from parents and educators alike. The teachers are great says Cruz. A lot of the teachers live in town...the kids get to see [them] at the pool. Also not to be missed: the town s annual holiday festivities, like the Memorial Day Parade and Fourth of July s Firecracker four-mile run 19,670 $438,833 $410,276 the opportunity to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities, she says. Sparta has its own bowling alley, movie theater, golf club and free summer concerts. I have wonderful memories growing up in this town and wanted a similar experience for my children, says Gibbons. White Deer Plaza and boardwalk is a charming hub for residents and visitors. Spectacular lake views, boating, restaurants, boutique shops, an old-fashioned candy store and ice cream parlor conjure up images of simpler times. Sparta successfully combines a small-town atmosphere with the amenities and and subsequent evening fireworks, both held at the scenic Nomahegan Park, a breathtaking outdoor space with scenic trails, sports fields and a playground. by DAN LOGIUDICE opportunities of a larger town. The Sparta Glen Park is among the many parks and sports fields. Nestled in a narrow ravine with a cascading stream, its hiking trails lead to amazing views. Says Gibbons: I never fail to see a friendly face when I m out and have always admired the pride people show in our town. by LORI PRICE April 2017 njfamily.com 27

Wayne Best in Passaic County When you think of Wayne, you probably think of William Paterson University or the massive Willowbrook Mall, both major landmarks of the sprawling 25-square-mile town in North Jersey. Of course, the shopping is a huge plus, but there s more to this town than being home to one of the state s largest malls. There are so many benefits to this Passaic County township, particularly the relatively short New York City commute, minus the exorbitant property taxes of Bergen or Essex counties. And Wayne, which is only about 25 miles outside of Manhattan, has a variety of different lifestyles within its borders. That s what drew Jennifer Baroan to the area a year and a half ago. We picked Wayne based on the school system, family-friendly town and proximity to NYC, she says. We have very pretty parks with beautiful views, lakes and mountains and an amazing 54,641 $443,762 town pool and lake that most of us who belong refer to as the country club. Danae Maxwell has lived with her family in Wayne for eight years and echoes education as a huge plus. I think the schools are the main reason Wayne is special, adds Maxwell. I also like all the community events at the library. It s at the crossroads of major highways (Routes 46, 23 and 80), giving residents easy access to almost any part of the state. That may sound like a whole lot of traffic, but you can be in a completely different part of town within minutes, relaxing by a lake or hiking in High Mountain Park Preserve in the Watchung Mountains. This diversity is courtesy of small unincorporated communities, like Packanack Lake, Barbours Mills and Lower Preakness and more, that together make up the larger township. Wayne has a rich history, too, including the Dey Mansion and Van Saun House that played pivotal roles as headquarters for George Washington and General Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. by ANGEL MADISON PHOTO COURTESY OF DONNA CANGELOSI Montgomery Best in Somerset County David Cheskis knew he had the best of both worlds when he moved to Montgomery Township 18 years ago. It s well known for our great schools, great location and character, he says We re big enough to have great resources, but small enough to have that hometown feel. Montgomery is convenient to much of what New Jersey has to offer, and that s why it ranked second overall on our Best Towns For Families list for the second year in a row. Sitting on the edge of Somerset County, residents get peace and quiet (not to mention amazing country views), plus easy access to grocery stores, shopping, restaurants and kid-friendly things to do. Known for its rural feel, Montgomery recently got a huge upgrade in the parks department: Skillman Park, which has a 2.2-mile-long trail where kids can ride their 22,078 $598,819 bikes, got a major face lift two years ago. It s also nestled next to Veterans Park in Belle Mead with miles of trails and a gorgeous arboretum. Cheskis says it s a real selling point: There are so many things for families to do, like outdoor activities [and] township-sponsored extracurricular programs that keep us active and entertained, but also bring us together as a community. There are also practical benefits of living in the center of the state, especially if you re a working parent. Commuters take NJ Transit s Northeast Corridor line from nearby Princeton Junction to New York City (under an hour) or to Philadelphia (85 minutes). Another huge perk is its proximity to Princeton University, making it easy for your squad to catch a soccer or basketball game, sit in on a lecture (if they re old enough!) or grab a cone from The Bent Spoon in downtown Princeton without missing bedtime. by MURPHY MORONEY PHOTO COURTESY OF TAMMY GARAFFA 28 New Jersey Family April 2017

Asbury Park: We Still Love You! 16,081 $314,755 Greetings from Asbury Park. As beloved as this seaside resort city made famous by Bruce Springsteen s debut album Greetings from Asbury Park is, it s also not at the top of the list of places to move if you have young kids. On the numbers alone, we get it. Our annual ranking of Best Towns for Families is based on criteria that measure quality of life things like how good the schools are and how high the crime rate is. Asbury, admittedly, has a school system fighting to improve, and the city struggles with pockets of high crime. So it brought up the rear in our third annual tally of the Garden State s best towns to raise a family. But like a Springsteen song might say, dig into that coal with a Jersey attitude and you might find there s a diamond waiting inside. Ask Angelica Morales, a mother of three (19, 7 and 4) who s lived in the city most of her life and watched its renaissance in recent years. She s seen how Cookman Avenue, the downtown s main retail and dining drag, has evolved from hollowed out storefronts to a bevy of antique stores, artisanal restaurants and studios. She s witnessed how the train station at the city s edge that takes commuters to Manhattan has helped make the community a more affordable option for New York City dwellers looking for a summer home. And there s no way she could miss the oceanfront redevelopment that s transformed the city s boardwalk. It used to be the famed Stone Pony music club, a Paramount Theater and Asbury Park Convention Hall and little else. Now, Asbury s a gem that attracts more families every summer. (It definitely feels that way on a hot day when Morales is trying to get the kids a sweet treat at Just Another Day s Ice Cream shop on the boardwalk). Heck, the new Asbury Hotel that opened a few blocks from the ocean was voted the country s best new hotel in January by USA Today. I love it here, Morales says. My kids are lucky. They have the lake across from us where they can go fishing. And, blocks away, the ocean is there. We can go to the beach. We can go the park my kids have fun. Morales, whose two young boys both go to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, knows the education system in town isn t perfect. But brothers Luis, 7, and Eber, 4, are in the same building with teachers and support staff that Morales trusts and believes in, she says. And progress takes time. So when the last school bell of the day rings, Morales and her family take every chance they get to explore. It s the word she often chooses for learning more about her ever-changing city. You can t sit somewhere and think the ocean is going to come to you, she says, sounding a bit like one of the Springsteen songs that helped make her hometown famous. You have to look for it. If you don t look for it, you re never going to get it. by RICHARD QUINN FROM TOP: COURTESY OF THE ASBURY HOTEL / ISTOCKPHOTO.COM: DENISTANGNEYJR 30 New Jersey Family April 2017
