BURNHAM MODEL RAILWAY CLUB. Chairman: Secretary: Treasurer: Exhibition Manager: David Bysouth Chris James Mike Randle Norman Clymer Burnham and District Model Railway Club wish you a very warm welcome to this weekend s Pre-Christmas Show Our show is made up of a variety of layouts in all gauges and from an assortment of times, pre-nationalisation, the big four and modern-day diesels. We also have a good mix of traders and hope everyone can find something that they need. With special thanks to all our exhibitors, traders for their support. We hope that you enjoy our show and find plenty of exhibits that interest, enthuse and inspire you. Never be afraid to ask questions, most railway modellers are only too pleased to talk about their displays and explain how they arrived at the layout seen before you. Enjoy your time at the show BDMRC Committee Please note that although the following pages are correct at time of printing, we may need to modify or delete items at short notice as a result of unexpected changes beyond or control.
LAYOUTS 1. Victoria Ridge- G Scale Digital Command Control by AAR Models Victoria Ridge is fictitious but loosely based in North Carolina, where a small group of people had a dream to set up a street car museum on a small ex-army depot which closed in When the land was sold off they were able to buy a few acres of land including a former hanger warehouse building which they restored and converted into a workshop for there street Cars. In 1960 it was opened to the public with about a mile of track and their dream to become a working museum and retail outlet came to fruition. Early Wooden buildings based on a Cowboy Western Theme were purchased, restored and leased out to retailers. A new stud line joins to the main Amtrak Line giving the public access to the working museum. 2. M Shed EM Gauge 4mm/ft by John England The layout was built specifically for the EM Gauge Society s 60 th Anniversary challenge in 2015 and was a runner-up in that challenge. The layout and rolling stock were built by me, with help from both my sons. M shed is the home of the industrial collections of Bristol Museum, based in the last warehouse in use on the docks. It includes Bristol Harbour Railway which runs from M shed to SS Great Britain along the dockside and to Ashton Bridge along the New Cut. M shed today offers a train trip on Britain s only dockside steam railway behind one of our Bristol-built locomotives. The layout shows those trips and other activities around the harbourside. Don t miss the working steam crane, dockside cranes, wagon-hauling capstan and other museum items. There are also three eating places although I doubt your hunger will be satisfied! The challenge required a layout 60 inches long (for the 60 years of the society) and 18.2 inches wide (for the 18.2 mm gauge of the track in EM). I have taken some liberties with the actual track plan in order to fit a working representation of the shed and railway into the space allowed. Locomotives include an example from each of the Bristol manufacturers (Peckett s and Avonside) that normally work passenger trains, together with the Ruston diesel used on the line. There are also a number of visitors which are mostly models of actual visitors in the history of the prototype. Wagons include the passenger train as operated today and a selection of other vehicles that could have visited the docks in the past. LAYOUTS Cont.
3. Hollow Fosse Scale 3mm/tt 1950s LMS/BR (WR) SR John Thomas Hollow Fosse is a factitious location in the south-west Cotswolds and represents a small rural branch line that connects with the former Midland and South Western Junction Railway. After being absorbed into the Great Western Railway it still provided a useful link between the midlands and the south coast. Nationalisation allowed the mainline and its branches to settle into the slow rhythm of the countryside that it served. Locomotives and rolling stock were still a mixture of previous railway groups, GWR (Western), Southern and Midland including mixed trains which rationalised train movements The layout endeavours to recreate the atmosphere of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The buildings, many of which are modelled on actual structures, depict a typical Cotswold location. The layout which is L shaped has dimensions of 5ft x 3ft and is operated from the rear of the 5ft length. Lt is modelled to a 3mm. 1ft scale (Triang TT) 4. Brinley Green Scale/Gauge Gauge OO 4mm/ft Cale Rail Society A fictitious layout of an engine shed based around the South West area during the days of steam. Built from a plan designed over 35 years ago and named after the designer Mr E B Green. A large 4 road shed, with ashing, turning & storage facilities. Sadly, Brin never got to see his dream of his loco shed finished, he only seen it as boards & track during the building stage. Brin was hospitalised before completion & sadly passed away. This is our tribute to a great friend. Someone who is still very sorely missed & if you had the time, he would pass on any information he had, from his time in the war as a POW to how to fit that last siding on a board already 2 too narrow. This usually then brought on the phrase of I ve been thinking! We just hope that some of his knowledge has rubbed off on us. The layout is DC with manual point s control. 5. Compton Quay Gauge 00 4mm/ft both DC and DCC Callum Willcox Compton Quay is a small, but busy Quay Side Railway set in the 1950 s/1960 s. The line serves a major warehouse and dock craft, moving all manner of goods, too and from the nearby railhead. The dockside itself is cobbled, showing the lines original Victorian roots. As well as being served by a small fleet of industrial locos and shunters, the line also attracts the odd BR locomotive, adding to the already mixed selection of motive power. Compton Quay is a micro layout, created as a project on my YouTube Channel, SDJR7F88, to see what can be done with left over every day items and off the shelf products like card building kits, scenic products and rolling stock, which can be picked up in any good model shop. One of this layout's most interesting features is that it stands on top of an Ironing Board, showing its simplicity and size. LAYOUTS Cont.
6. Coburg Yard N Gauge 2mm/ft Michael Beard Coburg Yard represents just one of the many thousands of small towns in America at the height of American confidence in the mid to late 1950 s. Modelled in N Scale the layout is typically American and 99% of the items necessary originated in the USA. The track is Atlas code 55; most of the buildings are kit-bashed Walthers. Almost all of the locos are Atlas while the freight stock comes from a variety of makers. All the stock is fitted with Microtrains couplers and the freight cars all have Microtrains trucks and Fox Valley Models metal wheels. Please speak to the operator he gets lonely! 7. Blowers Green Gauge 0 7mm/ft Bill Connelly The wagon repair yard is based on a former wagon repair works in Birmingham and set in the BR blue period, 1965 to Blowers Green Wagon repair Yard is designed to show that a modest sized 7mm FS layout can be a little more than just a shunting plank. Blowers Green Wagon Repair is, or would be if it had ever existed, situated on the now mothballed line between Stourbridge junction and Wolverhampton and lies just south of Dudley Tunnel near to the site of the former Blowers Green Station and Netherwood Junction.
EXHIBITION LAYOUT
LAYOUTS Cont. 8. Burnbridge 00 4mm/ft DCC Burnham Model Railway Club The layout is set in the change over period from steam to diesel and Burnbridge is a fictitious market town situated on the banks of the Burnbridge to Chedway canal, it has a small wharf and is still used as a goods interchange point. The line was to become a secondary main line to the southwest and an interchange point for cross-country trains thus the servicing facilities, carriage/dmu sidings and turntable evolved. Most services are of Western Region origin although there are interlopers from Southern and other regions due to the holiday traffic. The layout is DCC run using the Digitrax system hence many locomotives with sound are present. 9. Parracombe Gauge 009 4mm/ft 1920 s era by Peter Hollins Situated a few miles south of the preserved Woody Bay station in North Devon, Parracombe Halt was on the 2ft. gauge Lynton & Barnstaple railway that ran 19 miles across the edge of Exmoor to connect Lynton with the standard gauge LSWR network at Barnstaple Town station. Viewing Side Parracombe is modelled in 4mm scale in the 1920 s period, around the change of ownership from the independent Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Co., to the Southern Railway. The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is now operating again after a rest period of over 60 years. The line is in the process of being reopened in stages, as and when funds permit. The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway have their displays and literature within the confines of the layout, as it is associated with the preservation society.
LAYOUTS Cont. 10. Carters Yard - N Gauge 2mm/ft by Steve Bottemley An industrial townscape centred around Carters Factory somewhere in the north of England in the 1960's/70's (depending on the locos/rolling stock/vehicles in use). The layout, measuring approximately 4' by 3', consists of one high level (goods yard) and two low level (main line) continuous running loops which can be controlled by either analogue or DCC control systems. 11. Shillingstone Light Railway 7mm/ft N G by Toby Hollins-Jones Situated approximately 5 miles north of Blandford Forum, Shillingstone Light Railway was built by Sir Thomas Salt between 1953 & 1954 to service his pig farm in the grounds of Shillingstone House. The line was an instant success, being worked by a small 4 wheeled diesel called Belle (after Sir Thomas favourite sow), and was later used to amuse the locals at the summer fetes that were held in the grounds of the house. Shillingstone Light Railway is modelled in 7mm scale and represents one of the station areas on the line. 12. STUDLAND-A LEGOMOTION PROJECT by Roger and Neil Grace An L shaped layout to showcase rail possibilities with LEGO. Our first project. Features Container Depot and Harbour. A modular layout based on recycled interior doors.'https//legotrain.wordpress.com. Blogsite' 13. Coombe View Gauge 00 4mm/ft Chris James from Burnham Club The layout is set in the changeover period from steam to diesel and is somewhere on the North Devon coast. It is loosely based on Ilfracombe being a terminus station with goods yard and engine shed with Turntable. During the summer the Saturday holiday traffic makes the station very busy. The layout is DCC run using the Digitrax system hence many locomotives with sound are present.
