2 Christmas at historic Cliveden House Cliveden is unique... No one could resist an invitation to Cliveden; From Churchill to Chaplin, Lawrence to Lennon. Fortunes have been made, plots hatched. History changed... The story of Cliveden is about 300 years of power, politics and parties. A house built for entertaining.. The first house was built in 1666 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. A notorious rake, schemer and wit, he created Cliveden as a hunting lodge where he could entertain his friends and mistress. Since then it has twice been destroyed by fire, only to emerge more stunning than before. The house has played host to virtually every British monarch since George I and has been home to three Dukes, an Earl and Frederick Prince of Wales, who created a happy family home here until his death in Queen Victoria, a frequent guest was not amused when the house was bought by William Waldorf Astor, America's richest citizen. When in 1906 he gave it to his son and daughter-in-law Nancy Astor, Cliveden became the hub of a hectic social whirl, where notable guests included everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and President Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw. The Profumo Affair The year was While the Cold War was slowly chilling British politics, Cliveden House was consumed in a sultry summer of sweltering heat. Cooling off in the now famous outdoor pool, was Christine Keeler, a nineteen year old rumoured mistress of a suspected Russian spy. Attending a hot mid summer's party hosted by the then owner Lord Astor, the young woman was one of a few exclusive guests enjoying the luxurious celebrations held within Cliveden House's magnificent gardens. Also in attendance was John Profumo, an up-andcoming Conservative Secretary of State for War and husband of well-known actress, Valerie Hobson. Profumo and Keeler embarked on an illicit affair following their chance meeting at Cliveden House; an affair which was to force his resignation, irrevocably damage the Prime Minister's reputation, and impact on the course of British politics forever. 50 years has passed since that fateful meeting which was to alter Britain's political landscape. 3 make a bit of your own history at Cliveden House Offer and Rates Christmas Eve - Tuesday 24th December 2013 On arrival you are warmly greeted by the team and shown to your beautifully appointed room. Once unpacked, join the other revellers for festive afternoon tea with mulled wine in the Great Hall while carol singers lift the atmosphere with traditional hymns. During the early evening enjoy a Champagne canapé reception in the Great Hall before moving through to the newly redecorated restaurant for a delicious four-course gourmet dinner (dress code: lounge suit). As midnight approaches, you are invited to attend midnight mass at the local parish church of St Nicolas in nearby Taplow, returning to the house for hot chocolate and stollen cake before bedtime. Christmas Day - Wednesday 25th December 2013 Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in bed or in the restaurant, before stretching your legs around the Cliveden estate taking in the long garden, river walk or Parterre gardens. Head into the restaurant for the highlight of your Christmas Day; Cliveden's traditional four-course lunch awaits you (dress code: smart casual). After lunch, take in some fresh air again or gather around the fire to play cards and board games with friends and family. In the evening, a buffet supper will be served in the restaurant (dress code: smart casual). Boxing Day - Thursday 26th December 2013 Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before joining the annual Cliveden treasure hunt in the house - it's not just for the children! Enjoy a guided butler's talk and tour of the house, revealing the secrets and revelations from 300 years of history, followed by a generous afternoon tea buffet in the Great Hall. Take the opportunity to enjoy the 376 acres of beautiful National Trust Grounds. In the evening join us at 7pm for a Champagne and canapé reception followed by a three-course dinner with wine (on shared tables of up to 12 guests). See your stay off in style by dancing after dinner, late into the night with our live Jazz band (dress code: black tie). Friday 27th December 2013 Breakfast at leisure in bed or in the restaurant before departure at 11am. Until next year! 5 Float in thermal hot springs in Tuscany whilst it snows around you Well, we can t actually guarantee that it will snow when you re there, but it does regularly in winter and we think it would be pretty awesome to float around in water at 37c with the snow drifting down on your head.
