3 Our aim is to ensure that the core of the town remains attractive to both the local residents and the many visitors. We: monitor planning applications to ensure development and change, innovative or modern, is sympathetic and proportionate to the immediate locality; hold talks on matters of local interest; erect blue plaques to commemorate worthy events and people; give awards to new and improved buildings; provide a quarterly newsletter full of information of local interest. New members are needed and are made very welcome. Membership is just 7.40 or for a joint household subscription per year. A beautiful, listed historic church with an Anglo-Saxon foundation, Norman elements and later period features. This church is full of treasures bestowed upon it by the Roucliff family. The monumental brass in the chancel has effigies of a man and woman, believed to be from the Roucliff family. 5 Grove House Skipton Road, Harrogate, HG1 4LA Thursday Saturday 10.30am 2.30pm and Sunday 2.30pm 4.00pm Historic Grade II listed building set in seven acres of gardens, which was the former home of Samson Fox (former Harrogate Mayor and benefactor). The museum displays artefacts relating to the Order of Buffaloes dating from the mid-19th century. Council Chamber Council Chamber and Mayor s parlour Crescent Gardens, Harrogate, HG1 2SG Thursday 2.00pm 4.00pm, Friday 9.30am 12.30pm and 2.00pm 4.00pm Public access to the Council Chamber where council meetings take place to make decisions about the local community. Find out about its history and visit the Mayor s parlour, subject to availability, to see the civic insignia and treasures. Harlow Tower Harlow Tower Nursery Lane, Harrogate, HG2 0AZ Saturday and Sunday 10.00am 5.00pm Grade II listed tower dating from Climb its 100 steps. In the entrance at ground level, the tower contains a Foucault s Pendulum which demonstrates the rotation of the earth. Grove House P5

Please book in advance on or The spectacular showcase auditorium was purpose built to enhance the spoken word and is the ultimate venue for events, with flexibility to accommodate up to 2000 visitors. Come along to see where the Eurovision Song Contest came to town over 25 years ago and hear about some of the remarkable events that have taken place over the years. The Harrogate Club 36 Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, HG1 5PR Sunday 11.00am 2.00pm Elegant double bow-fronted Victorian house where the gentlemen s club was founded in 1875 and still exists today containing much of the original furnishing and decoration. The billiards room on the first floor was once patronised by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Titus Salt. Sorry, not suitable for under fives or wheelchair users. Harrogate Synagogue St Mary s Walk, Harrogate, HG2 0LW Thursday 10.00am 12 noon The Harrogate Hebrew Congregation was established in 1918 and a synagogue was opened on its present site in The current building was erected in 1968 and has always functioned in the Orthodox tradition under the auspices of the Chief Rabbi but as an independent body. The congregants have traditionally been active in the wider community having had a Mayor, several councillors and many members who have held other positions involved in local affairs. Refurbished following extensive fire damage in Old Magnesia Well Pump Room Grade II listed stone building built in 1858 to house both the pump for the adjacent magnesia well and the Corporation Museum. Come and see recent restoration works including new paving, restored roof and internal design. It was fully restored to its original magnificence in 2008 and continues to be a venue for events, arts and entertainment. P7

Stonefall Cemetery Stonefall Cemetery Wetherby Road, Harrogate, HG3 1DE Guided tours Thursday and Friday at 10.00am and 2.00pm, meet at the Stonefall Cemetery office. Tours last approx 90 minutes The tour will take you around the main cemetery and its sections, with associated memorialisation, including a brief referral to the adjoining Hebrew Cemetery and War Grave Commission Cemetery. The tour will also include the Crematorium and ancillary buildings with an optional guided tour of the crematory and cremation area. P8 Christ Church on the Stray Church Square, Harrogate, HG1 4SW Thursday 9.00am 5.00pm, Friday 9.00am 3.00pm, Saturday 9.00am 3.00pm, Sunday 8.45am 10.00am and 11.15am 12 noon The building was the first permanent church in Harrogate with the main body dating from 1831 and galleries, plus an east end in a more Christ Church on the Stray

9 elaborate style added in the 1860s. The Parish Centre was built in 1988 and is planning further development. Refreshments available during most opening times. St John s Church Church Drive, Bilton, Harrogate, HG1 3DT Thursday and Friday 9.00am 12.30pm, Saturday 10.00am 12 noon St John s Church, Bilton, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, was built in Grade II* listed, it has a west tower, a nave with a north aisle and a south aisle with a porch and a chancel. Major restoration work and re-ordering took place in The impressive organ case and oak screen can now be seen to best advantage. Its church hall is also listed. St Peter s Church Cambridge Road, Harrogate, HG1 1RW Thursday Saturday 9.30am 3.00pm Consecrated in 1876 and reopened in May 2012 after extensive improvement works which have provided a superb new range of facilities and revealed more of the splendour of the original building. Impressive painted glass by Burlison and Grylis. Welcomers in attendance to assist and inform visitors. Café open 10.30am 3.00pm. St Mark s Church Leeds Road, Harrogate, HG2 8AY Thursday and Friday 8.30am 1.30pm Built in 1898 by John Oldrid Scott and refurbished in recent years with an opulent interior. Notable rose window and alabaster reredos. Refreshments will be available between 10.00am and 12 noon. St Wildrid s Church St Wilfrid s Church Duchy Road, Harrogate, HG1 2EZ Thursday and Friday12 noon 4.00pm Grade I listed building from the early 20th century and considered to be the best work of architect Temple Moore. See the stained glass and figure brass in the chancel floor depicting the first priest. Welcomers in attendance to assist and inform visitors. St Peter s Church Wesley Chapel Oxford Street, Harrogate, HG1 1PP Saturday and Thursday 10.00am 12 noon Grade II listed building dating from Built by Lockwood and Mawson in the classical meeting house style with unusual curved gallery and superb woodwork. 10 Knaresborough Castle Knaresborough Castle and Courthouse Museum Castle Yard, Knaresborough, HG5 8AS Friday and Saturday 11.00am 4.00pm Free entry to discover medieval Knaresborough the King s Chamber, dark dungeon and secret underground tunnel. It will be a rare opportunity to visit the church tower which is locked for the rest of year. Access to tower by foot only via spiral staircase. Nidderdale Museum King Street, Pateley Bridge, HG3 5LE Sunday 1.30pm 4.30pm Free entry to this wonderful museum with a large and lively collection illustrating all aspects of Dales life in the past. The 11 rooms of exhibitions, housed in the former workhouse, contain wonderful collections of photographs, costumes, and artefacts to give you a real insight into life in Nidderdale throughout history. Contact: or Nidderdale Museum The Ruin at Hackfall The Ruin at Hackfall Grewelthorpe, HG4 3DE Saturday and Sunday 10.00am 4.00pm This little pavilion, conceived and created by the Aislabies, is perched dramatically above a steep wooded gorge in the remnants of an outstanding mid-18th century garden at Hackfall. 12 Chapel of St Mary Magdalen Chapel of St Mary Magdalen Magdalen s Road, Ripon, HG4 1HU Saturday 2.00pm 4.00pm A rare survival of a medieval leper hospital, last restored in 1989, containing medieval pavement with Roman medallion, low-side/ leper window and stone altar. For the Heritage Open Day, the building will host the Old Codling Feast, an 18th century tradition. There will also be quizzes, and story-telling. Costumed guides. Church of Christ the Consoler Newby Hall, Skelton-cum-Newby, Ripon, HG4 5AE Saturday 10.00am 5.00pm and Sunday 10.00am 4.00pm Free entry to the public, guests are free to wander around this beautiful Northern church. The current house is of neo-classical design, built in 1802 on the site of the castle. It contains conditionally exempt items including paintings, porcelain, silver and furniture and this is a rare chance for the public to visit them in this beautiful house. 13 Fountains Abbey Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon, HG4 3DY Saturday 10.00am 5.00pm Declared a World Heritage Site in 1986, comprising: the spectacular ruin of a 12th century abbey, a monastic mill, Jacobean manor house, Victorian High Gothic church, medieval deer garden and one of the best surviving examples of a Georgian water garden. The Gazebo The Gazebo Blossomgate, Ripon, HG4 Sunday 2.00pm 4.00pm A hidden 18th century garden pavilion consisting of two towers joined by a gallery. Built to give a view of the countryside. A rare survivor, open only on Heritage Open Days each year. The Masonic Hall The Masonic Hall Water Skellgate, Ripon, HG4 1BH Sunday 2.00pm 4.00pm A rare chance to see inside this early 20th century building and learn about Freemasonry in the area. P13

14 Ripon Cathedral Ringing Chamber Minster Road, Ripon, HG4 1QS Sunday 2.00pm 4.00pm See the room in the cathedral s south west tower from where its peal of bells is rung, and learn about bell-ringing techniques and peals from experts. Saturday: taste original workhouse soup and bread. Sunday: local restaurant Lockwoods will demonstrate cooking using our garden produce at 2.00pm and 3.00pm. Ripon Grammar School Library Clotherholme Road, Ripon, HG4 2DG Sunday 2.00pm 4.00pm The original school hall of the 1870 Grammar School building, designed by Leeds architect George Corson. St John the Baptist Church Ripon Workhouse Garden Ripon Workhouse Museum and Garden Allhallowgate, Ripon, HG4 1LE Saturday and Sunday 11.00am 4.00pm Explore the Workhouse Museum and Garden (as featured on the ITV Secrets From The Workhouse series) with trails, tours and activities focussing on food. Visit the restored 1890s workhouse kitchen garden to find out what s growing and why. Enjoy a cup of tea on the lawn or picnic in our kitchen garden. Notable stained glass, octagonal stone font, oak pews, choir stalls and vestry rail. The organ is a two manual pipe organ with pedals and a trumpet stop built by Laycock and Banister in There is a beautiful large churchyard. A guide will be available. P14

15 Starbeck Baths Spa Lane, Starbeck, HG2 7JF Friday and Sunday 10.30am 4.00pm Saturday 10:.0am 12 noon This public swimming pool was originally built in Previously known as the Prince of Wales Baths, it became one of the foremost spa attractions in the Victorian era. Starbeck Baths Heritage Open Days celebrate England s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring local history and culture to life.
