3 Annotated Bird Trip List This trip list of 407 species (including 15 heard only birds) follows the taxonomic order and nomenclature Clements 6 th Edition (updated 2014). The status of the threatened bird species is taken from Birdlife International (Threatened Species). NP National Park * - Heard only birds (1) Rheas - Rheidae Greater Rhea (Rhea americana) Near-threatened: Approximately 20 observed on the drive to San Clemente Nov 2 nd ; five en route to Campana on the 4 th ; and seen each day on the drive to Estancia Virocay, the estancia and the drive to San Pedro Nov 7-9. Greater Rhea (4) Tinamous - Tinamidae *Solitary Tinamou (Tinamus solitarius) Near-threatened: Singles were heard at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and 14 th. Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus): Excellent looks of one walking along the trail at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th, a brief look at one at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and heard on the 14 th. Red-winged Tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens): Three observed at El Palmar NP Nov 5 th including great looks at a couple crossing the road in front of us. Spotted Nothura (Nothura maculosa): Singles observed in fields along the roadside at Ceibas Nov 4th, El Palmar the 5 th, Estancia Virocay the 8 th and two seen en route to San Pedro Nov 9 th. 3

4 Spotted Nothura, Ceibas (1) Screamers Anhimidae Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata): About eight observed en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, a single on the way to Campana Nov 4 th ; over 100 were at the Ceibas marshes the following day, and two were seen at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. 5 (15) Ducks - Anatidae White-faced Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna viduata): Small flocks (with a high of 10) were at wetlands by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd ; at Ceibas Nov 5 th and at Estancia Virocay Nov 7-8 th. Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis): Four were seen at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th and two on the 9 th. Fulvous Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna bicolor): One was seen in flight Nov 2nd at Punta Rasa and two the following day. Black-necked Swan (Cygnus melanocoryphus): About 25 were observed at a lake side stop by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2nd. Coscoroba Swan (Coscoroba coscoroba): Two were observed at a lake side stop by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2nd. About 25 were observed at a lakeside stop by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2nd. Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata): Four were seen at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th and two at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. Ringed Teal (Callonetta leucophrys): A single was seen en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, six en route to Campana, eight were observed at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th and two seen at El Palmar NP the following day. Brazilian Teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis): Two were seen daily at Estancia Virocay Nov 7-9 th and four were flushed from the ponds at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. Chiloe (Southern) Wigeon (Anas sibilatrix): Two were seen at a lake by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and singles at Punta Rasa Nov 3-4 th. Red Shoveler (Anas platalea): Two were observed at a lake by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and one was at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd. White-cheeked Pintail (Anas bahamensis): A single was at a lake by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2. Yellow-billed Pintail (Anas georgica): Four were noted at a lake en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, two were seen at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd and five on the 4 th. Silver Teal (Anas versicolor): Two were seen at Otamendi Nov 4 th. Yellow-billed (Speckled) Teal (Anas flavirostris): Eight were noted en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, approximately 20 were seen at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd and 4 th, and five at Ceibas marshes the next day. Rosy-billed Pochard (Netta peposaca): Eight were at a lake by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and two at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. 5

6 (3) Guans, Chachalacas - Cracidae Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris): Two were briefly seen at a distance at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th. Dusky-legged Guan (Penelope obscura): Great looks of one perched in a tree at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th. Black-fronted Piping-Guan (Pipile jacutinga) Endangered: Good looks of this striking cracid perched in a tree near the river at Urugua-i Park Nov 12 th. (3) Grebes - Podicipedidae White-tufted Grebe (Rollandia rolland): Over 20 were at a lake by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and one was seen at Otamendi Nov 4th. Least Grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus): Two adults and four young were observed in a pond near San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th. Great Grebe (Podiceps major): Four were at a lake by the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd. (1) Flamingos - Phoenicopteridae Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) Near-threatened: Approximately 40 seen at Punta Rasa Nov 2 nd and 3 rd, and 20 en route to Campana the following day. (1) Albatrosses Diomedeidae Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche (Diomedea) melanophrys): Endangered. Two whitebodied, dark-backed albatrosses observed offshore from the tip of Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd, were thought to be this species. (2) Petrels Procellariidae Southern Giant Petrel (Macronectes giganteus): Three observed off Punta Rasa of Nov 2 nd and two the following day. Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus): A single was observed off Punta Rasa of Nov 2 nd and two the following day including an individual landing on the beach repeatedly. (1) Storks Ciconiidae Maguari Stork (Ciconia maguari): Common in the pampas of the northeast with over 30 seen foraging in fields en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, 100 s seen en route to Campana Nov 4 th, greater than 50 in the Ceibas marshes area and en route to El Palmar Nov 5 th and roughly 20 during the drive to Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. 6

7 Maguari Stork, Ceibas marshes (1) Cormorants - Phalacrocoracidae Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus): Fairly common in northeast with many seen en route to San Clemente and at Punta Rasa Nov 2 nd, due to strong winds only four noted at Punta Rasa the following day, about 20 were in lakes, rivers en route to Campana Nov 4 th. Ten were perched on a dead snag in a dammed area en route to Puerto Iguazu Nov 10, and five on Nov 12 th and 15 th. (1) Anhingas - Anhingidae Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga): Two were observed at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. (9) Herons - Ardeidae Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis): One observed perched briefly then seen in flight, and a couple of others heard, at a marsh along RP 40 en route to Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. Another was watched briefly in flight at the large marsh on Estancia Virocay the following day. Rufescent Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma lineatum): Two adults including good looks of one standing in the open were at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Singles were observed daily at San Sebastian Lodge Nov th and another at was perched on an overhanging branch over a channel at Urugua-i NP the 14 th. Cocoi (Black-necked) Heron (Ardea cocoi): This large heron is conspicuous and several were seen daily in the pampas on all days but Nov 6 th. An estimated 10, almost all singles, were seen en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and driving to San Pedro Nov 7 th. 7

8 Great Egret (Egretta alba): Common and widespread with many seen on all days in the pampas with the exception of our day at El Palmar, Nov 6th. One was recorded during our drive to Puerto Iguazu on Nov 15 th. Snowy Egret (Egretta thula): Common and widespread with several seen on all days in the pampas with the exception of our day at El Palmar, Nov 6th. Snowy Egret, Punta Rasa Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis): Hundreds were seen in fields in the pampas during our travels in the northeast Nov 2 nd to 9th. Around 50 were at the night roost in the ponds of San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and 30 were seen on the 14 th. Striated Heron (Butorides striatus): A few were seen on most days, usually in flight overhead, in the northeast with a high of six at Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. One flew over at Iguazu Falls NP Nov 11, and one or two were recorded daily at the ponds of San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th to 15 th. Whistling Heron (Syrigma sibilatrix): A few were seen daily in the pampas on all days but Nov 6 th. 8

9 Whistling Heron, Punta Rasa Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax): Two were seen in flight at Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th and 8 th. (4) Ibises Threskiornithidae White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi): Hundreds were observed in the fields en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and over 40 seen at Punta Rasa and area Nov 3 rd and 4 th. Bare-faced Ibis (Phimosus infuscatus): About 20 were seen en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, four were at Otamendi Nov 4 th and 100 s were seen at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Black-faced Ibis (Theristicus melanopis): Three were foraging with cattle Nov 9 th on RP 43 north of Hwy 14 Near San Jose. Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja): One observed en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, six en route to Campana Nov 4 th, 12 in the vicinity of Ceibas marshes the next day, and a single on the way to Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. 9

10 Roseate Spoonbill, Corrientes Province (3) New World Vultures - Cathartidae Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus): Three were recorded at El Palmar NP Nov 6 th and several, 10 around Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th and many en route to San Pedro next day. Recorded daily in Misiones Province. Small numbers were recorded daily in Misiones Province Nov 10 th -15 th. Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura): Five were seen at El Palmar Nov 6 th, and a few en route to San Pedro Nov 9 th. Fairly common in Misiones Province with a few recorded daily from Nov 12 th to 15 th. Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture (Cathartes burrovianus): Two were coursing low over the grasslands at Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th, and four the next day. (12) Hawks - Accipitridae White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus): One perched bird observed Nov 7 th en route to Estancia Virocay. Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus): Two were seen soaring at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th and at Urugua-i NP Nov 12 th, another five were recorded at San Sebastian Lodge and area Nov 13 th. Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) Near-threatened: An adult was observed soaring high over Urugua-i NP from the parking lot, by TP on Nov 14 th. 10

11 Snail Kite (Rosthramus sociabilis): Over 70 seen Nov 2 nd en route to San Clemente mainly in road side ditches, well over 200 observed along the road ditches and watercourses en route to Campana Nov 4 th, and 200 en route to and including Ceibas marshes the following day. Huge amounts of rainfall a few weeks prior, had flooded many areas providing great habitat for snails the principal prey item for this kite. A few birds were seen during transit Nov 7 th and Nov 9 th. One was observed in over flight at Iguazu Falls NP Nov 11 th. Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea): One was perched in a tree by alongside the road en route to Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. Common in forested areas in Misiones Province with at least a few recorded daily Nov 10 th to 15 th. A high of over 30 was estimated at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. Long-winged Harrier (Circus buffoni): A few seen daily in the pampas grasslands in the northeast with the exception of El Palmar on Nov 6 th. A high of eight were recorded en route to Estancia Virocay on the 7 th. Cinereous Harrier (Circus cinereus): Two were coursing low over the pampas grasslands of Punta Rasa Reserve Nov 3 rd. Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus): One observed along RP 40 Nov 7 th. Savanna Hawk (Buteogallus meridionalis): Two were seen perched in fields along RP 40 Nov 7 th and two at Estancia Virocay the next day. Roadside Hawk (Buteo magnirostris): A few were seen daily in the northeast with a high of six noted on Nov 7 th. One calling bird was seen at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th, and one or two were recorded at San Sebastian Lodge and area Nov 12 th - 14 th. White-tailed Hawk (Buteo albicaudatus): An adult was observed soaring above the grasslands on RP 43 on Nov 9 th. Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus): A pair was perched in tall poplars along RP 40 Nov 7 th. (8) Rails Rallidae Red-and-White Crake (Laterallus leucopyrrhus): First detected by IR, brief but good views were obtained by some of the group, of one running and creeping through the marsh at Otamendi Reserve Nov 4 th. Giant Wood-Rail (Aramides ypecaha): One observed at Otamendi Reserve Nov 4 th, over 20 seen at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th, one at El Palmar the following day, two at the marsh along RP 40 on the 7 th and six seen at the marshes of Estancia Virocay on the 8 th. Large, active and noisy, this beautifully patterned rail was a favorite of the group. Grey-necked Wood-Rail (Aramides cajanea): A pair of this rail was observed in Iguazu Falls NP beside the tracks Nov 11 th, during the train ride from the upper to lower falls area. Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail (Aramides saracura): One came to the feeder at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 15 th the last day of our stay there. 11

12 Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus): An adult with a chick was observed at close quarters at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd, and another was heard at the large marsh Otamendi Reserve the following day. Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinica): Two were seen at a small marsh on Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata): Two were seen in ditches en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and three at Punta Rasa on the 3 rd. A few were present and recorded daily at the pond area of San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 15 th. Red-gartered Coot (Fulica armillata): About 15 was present on a lake en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd. (1) Limpkins - Aramidae Limpkin (Aramus guarauna): Around 15 were heard and seen at the Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th, and four were recorded at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. (1) Avocets - Recurvirostridae Black-necked (winged) Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus mexicanus): Over 40 were recorded en route to San Clemente and at Punta Rasa Nov 2 nd, three were observed at Punta Rasa the next day and about 10 were seen en route to Campana Nov 4 th. (5) Plovers - Charadriidae Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola): Eight were seen at Punta Rasa on Nov 2 nd and about 10 on the 3 rd. American Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica): Three were on the beach at the tip of Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd. Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis): Common and widespread in fields and open areas throughout the pampas grasslands and even within town parks. Recorded daily. Two-banded Plover (Charadrius faulklandicus): A lone bird in non-breeding plumage was found foraging at the beach west of the tip at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd. Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus): Singles were seen on the mudflats of Punta Rasa Nov 2 nd and 3 rd. (1) Jacanas Jacanidae Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana): Common in appropriate wetlands with emergent vegetation in the northeast. Two were seen at Otamendi Nov 4 th, greater than 25 at Ceibas wetlands Nov 5 th, 30 at the marsh area on RP 40, and two at Estancia Virocay Nov 8th and 9 th. (7) Sandpipers - Scolopacidae 12

13 Solitary Sandpiper (Tringa solitaria): One was observed at the pond area at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 15th. Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca): Six seen in the Punta Rasa Reserve area Nov 2nd and five on the 3 rd. Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes): Approximately 20 were foraging in the tidal flats at the small harbor near Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd and two were attending a small pond near Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Hudsonian Godwit (Limosa haemastica): About 20 basic plumaged birds were seen at Punta Rasa and the mudflats at he small harbor on Nov 2 nd and over 30 recorded the following day. Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres): One was seen in the Punta Rasa Reserve area Nov 2nd and a flock of 20 on the 3rd. White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis): Over 40 were seen in the Punta Rasa Reserve and area Nov 2nd and over 100 on Nov 3 rd. South American Snipe (Gallinago paraguaiae): One was observed in flight en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd. (11) Gulls - Laridae Brown-hooded Gull (Larus maculipennis): Hundreds were seen in fields along the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and en route to Campana Nov 4 th. Several were seen at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Gray-headed Gull (Larus cirrocephalus): Surprisingly, only two were seen both in flight over fields en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd. Kelp Gull (Larus dominicus): Thirty were seen in the Punta Rasa Reserve area Nov 2nd and 20 the following day. Olrog s (Band-tailed/Belcher s) Gull (Larus (belcheri) atlanticus) Breeding Endemic, Vulnerable: The Atlantic population of Belcher s Gull is considered to be a separate species by some. One was seen at the small harbor near the Punta Rasa Reserve on Nov 2 nd and 15 during the low tide on the 3 rd, all immatures. Large-billed Tern (Phaetusa simplex): One was seen perched on a buoy and then watched flying downstream, on the Paraguay River at El Palmar NP Nov 6 th. Common Tern (Sterna hirundo): Over 50 were roosting on the beach with other terns near the Punta Rasa Reserve tip area Nov 2 nd, and over 80 on Nov 3 rd. South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea): Ten were roosting with other terns Nov 2 nd and 3 rd at Punta Rasa. Snowy-crowned Tern (Sterna trudeaui): Two were seen in flight while driving en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd and around 10 en route to Campana Nov 4 th. 13

14 Royal Tern (Sterna maxima): Ten were seen at the Punta Rasa Reserve tip area Nov 2 nd and a single Nov 3 rd. Sandwich (Cayenne) Tern (Sterna sandvicensis eurygnatha): The southern form of the Sandwich Tern S. sandvicensis eurygnatha with an all yellow bill, is considered a separate species by some. Fifteen were seen roosting with other terns at the Punta Rasa Reserve tip area Nov 2 nd and 30 on the 3 rd. Black Skimmer (Rhynchops niger): A flock of over 50 was observed in the Punta Rasa Reserve area Nov 2nd and 20 were present on Nov 3rd. Skimmers were formerly placed in a separate family Rhynchopidae. (9) Pigeons - Columbidae Rock Pigeon (Columba livia): Common and widespread in towns and villages throughout the agricultural areas in the pampas. Three were in Andresito near San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th. Pale-vented Pigeon (Columba cayennensis): Two were observed at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th and another at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th. Picazuro Pigeon (Columba picazuro): This large pigeon is common and widespread throughout the northeast. Recorded every day Nov 2 15 th usually in flight but sometimes foraging in fields. Spot-winged Pigeon (Columba maculosa): Small numbers were seen on most days in the drier parts of the northeast. Three were seen en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, 10 in the Punta Rasa area the next day, and many noted in the El Palmar and Estancia Virocay area Nov 6-9 th. Picazuro Pigeon, Punta Rasa 14

15 Ruddy Ground-Dove (Columbina talpacoti): One was seen on the Estancia Virocay grounds Nov 8 th. Two were at the feeders at the Hummingbird Gardens at Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th and singles were noted at San Sebastian Lodge and area Nov 12 th and 15 th. Picui Ground-Dove (Columbina picui): Common and widespread in all areas. One was seen at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd, over 40 in the Ceibas area, one at El Palmar on the 6 th, over 20 en route to Estancia Virocay on the 7 th, and five leaving Estancia Virocay Nov 9 th. En route to Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th about 10 (singles/pairs) were seen, a few at Iguazu Falls NP Nov 11 th and pairs in the vicinity of Puerto Iguazu Nov 12 th and 15 th. Ruddy Quail-Dove (Geotrygon montana): One was heard at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th and one was seen briefly walking along the trail edge, before flushing at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi): Heard at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and 14 th, and four were observed along the entrance road early by TP on Nov 15 th. Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata): Abundant and widespread especially agricultural areas. Greater than 10,000 were observed flying to and from the river areas of El Palmar Nov 6 th. Small numbers were recorded each day in Misiones Province from Nov 10 th to 14 th. (7) Cuckoos - Cuculidae Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana): One partly obscured bird was seen perched in a wooded area at Estancia Virocay Nov 9 th. One or two were seen daily at San Sebastian Lodge and vicinity Nov 12 th to 15 th. Dark-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus melacoryphus): One was observed by PJ in riparian habitat along the river flowing by Mirador Del Palmar Nov 6 th. *Pearly-breasted Cuckoo (Coccyzus euleri): A calling bird could not be enticed into view at Urugua-i NP Nov 14 th. Guira Cuckoo (Guira guira): Fairly common and widespread in open country. Small numbers observed in the pampas areas on all days Nov 2 nd 9 th. Several were recorded every day in Misiones Province Nov 10 th to 15 th. Striped Cuckoo (Tapera naevia): Excellent looks at this usually shy cuckoo, singing from a wire in the entrance to Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Single birds were seen along the entrance road to San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th and 14 th. 15

16 Striped Cuckoo, Ceibas marshes Greater Ani (Crotophaga major): Singles were seen at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th, 13 th and 15 th, and a small flock of six on Nov 14 th. Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani): Small groups of about five were seen Nov 7th and 8 th at Estancia Virocay. Several were recorded every day in Misiones Province Nov 10 th to 15 th. (4) Owls - Strigidae Tropical Screech-Owl (Megascops choliba): One seen at close range, during late evening and another heard at the gardens (a pair) of Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. Great looks were obtained by another perched low in a tree near San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th with another four heard the same evening during owling. One was heard in the gardens of Toucan Lodge near Puerto Iguazu Nov 11 th. Tawny-browed Owl (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana): Excellent looks of a calling bird perched in the open, during owling, at an adjacent park near San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum): One was seen perched on a telephone wire along the highway near San Sebastian Lodge by TP and PJ Nov 13 th. Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia): Three observed in the Punta Rasa area Nov 3 rd, singles at observed at Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th- - 8 th, and three were along RP 43 the following day. 16

17 (6) Nightjars Caprimulgidae Nacunda Nighthawk (Podager nacunda): Approximately 10 were observed foraging low over the fields and seen perched in the pastureland while leaving Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Common Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis): Singles were heard Toucan Lodge at the outskirts of Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th and 11th, and another at San Sebastian Lodge the following evening. Scissor-tailed Nightjar (Hydropsalis brasiliana): Excellent looks were had of a female sitting on the road at the end of Los Loros track, El Palmar NP and another five were observed briefly in the headlights during our drive back to our lodging. Three were seen at El Palmar NP by TP and PJ the following evening, including a displaying male. Scissor-tailed Nightjar female, El Palmar Sickle-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus anomalus) Near-Threatened: A few close, but brief sightings of one foraging low over the path in the late evening at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. The low chuck call was heard a few times. Little Nightjar (Caprimulgus parvulus): One was seen roosting on the main road within El Palmar National Park by TP and PJ Nov 6 th and another was heard in the late evening, near the gardens of Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. Ocellated Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus ocellatus): One flushed from the path a few times, with brief looks (for some of us) in flight, during an afternoon walk, adjacent San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. (3) Swifts - Apodidae Sooty Swift (Cypseloides fumigatus): Two were seen flying over San Sebastian Lodge grounds fairly low (2 tree heights) on Nov 14th. Great Dusky Swift (Cypseloides senex): Two were observed foraging low over Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th, one was observed perched on a rock, only a few meters away in the upper falls Iguazu Falls NP, and hundreds were seen in flight including diving through the falls. Great Dusky Swift, Iguazu Falls Grey-rumped Swift (Chaetura cinereiventris): Several were seen daily in the Puerto Iguazu and San Sebastian Lodge areas including 50 at Puerto Iguazu Nov 11 th with some flying into an old large lamp post. (9) Hummingbirds - Trochilidae Black Jacobin (Florisuga fusca): About 10 observed attending the feeders at Jardin Picaflores, Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th. Planalto Hermit (Phaethornis pretrei): One seen at the feeders at Jardin Picaflores, Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th and another attended the feeder at the dining area San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 15 th. 18

Glittering-bellied Emerald (Chlorostilbon aureoventris): The most common and widespread hummer of the northeast: one at an Clemente Nov 2 nd, and two the following day; a high of an estimated 15 along the marsh road at Otamendi NP Nov 4 th ; and a couple at El Palmar Nov 5 th and 6 th. An estimated 50 plus observed attending the feeders at Jardin Picaflores, Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th. Singles were observed at Iguazu Falls NP and a female was guarding the feeder at San Sebastian Lodge Nov th. Swallow-tailed Hummingbird (Eupetomena (Camplyopterus) macroura): Great looks at one attending the feeders at Jardin Picaflores, Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th. Violet-capped Woodnymph (Thalurania glaucopis): Roughly 10 observed attending the feeders at Jardin Picaflores, Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th. Rufous-throated Sapphire (Hylocharis sapphirina): Good looks at a female at close range, showing the rufous chin, was obtained on the grounds of Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. Versicolored Emerald (Amazilia versicolor): About five observed attending the feeders at Jardin Picaflores, Puerto Iguazu Nov 10 th. Gilded (Sapphire) Hummingbird (Hylocharis chrysura): A high of 8 were seen along the marsh road at Otamendi NP Nov 4 th and another was perched in the gardens of Estancia Virocay Nov 9 th. White-eared Puffbird (Nystalus chacuru): Good views of one perched on a telephone wire over the highway near Andresito by TP and PJ on Nov 13 th. *Rusty-breasted Nunlet (Nonnula rubecula): One was heard at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. (3) Toucans - Ramphastidae Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis): Singles were seen en route to Puerto Iguazu Nov 9 th by TP, within Iguazu Falls NP on Nov 11 th, and San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th. Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco): Two were seen at Iguazu NP on Nov 11 th, two at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th and along the highway outside the lodge on the 15 th. Red-breasted Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus): A pair was seen visiting a nest hole near the entrance of Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th. Chequered Woodpecker (Picoides mixtus): One observed at Otamendi Reserve Nov 4 th and two were seen at Ceibas marshes the 5 th. White-browed (Yellow-browed) Woodpecker (Piculus aurulentus) Near-Threatened: A single bird watched foraging at the edge of the forest, San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th. Green-barred Woodpecker (Colaptes melanochloros): Three were seen in the Punta Rasa area Nov 3 rd and three at Otamendi the next day, a single was at Ceibas Nov 5 th and two on the Estancia Virocay grounds Nov 7 th. Campo Flicker (Colaptes campestris): A few to several were observed on all days (except Nov 4 th ) in the pampas grasslands from Nov 2 nd to the 9 th. 22

Blond-crested Woodpecker, San Sebastian Lodge Lineated Woodpecker (Dryocopus lineatus): A male was feeding in a woodlot at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. Robust Woodpecker (Campephilus robustus): One observed by TP and PJ along the entrance road to San Sebastian Lodge early morning Nov 13 th. Cream-backed Woodpecker (Campephilus leucopogon): Brief, distant looks of flying birds were had along RP 40 Nov 7 th, and Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. (1) Seriemas - Cariamidae *Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata): One was heard at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. (6) Falcons - Falconidae Southern Caracara (Caracara plancus): Common and widespread throughout the pampas grasslands with a few to several seen daily. Two were observed in the San Sebastian Lodge area Nov 14 th and 15 th. Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima): Several were seen en route to and at Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th to 9 th. Singles were observed in the vicinity of San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and 13 th. 23

24 Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango): Common and widespread with many seen daily. Occupies similar niche of crows and found in towns especially in drier areas. None recorded in Misiones Province Nov 10th to 15 th. American Kestrel (Falco sparverius): With the exception of Nov 3 rd several seen daily in the pampas grasslands perched on wires along the roadside. A single kestrel was seen at Iguazu Falls NP Nov 11 th and two en route to Puerto Iguazu Nov 15 th. Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis): Single birds in the grasslands of Estancia Virocay on Nov 7 th by TP and PJ, and another by the group the next day. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus): An adult was seen in flight at El Palmar Nov 6 th. (6) Parrots - Psittacidae Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus): Common and widespread in the pampas habitat. Many observed everyday Nov 2 nd to 9 th. Their large, colonial stick nests are a conspicuous feature on large snags, telephone poles and radio/hydro towers in open country of the northeast. Scaly-headed Parrot (Pionus maximiliani): A few to several were recorded usually in flight at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 15 th. Vinaceous-breasted Parrot (Amazona vinacea) Endangered: Two pairs were observed calling and flying overhead, and scope views of one perched at Araucaria State Park Nov 10 th. Blue-winged Parrotlet (Forpus xanthopterygius): A flock of four was seen flying over at Iguazu NP Nov 11 th. Maroon-bellied Parakeet (Pyrrhura frontalis): Five were at the banks of the river at Urugua-i SP Nov 12 th and good looks of five were had at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 15 th. White-eyed Parakeet (Aratinga leucophthalma): A small flock of 10 in flight was at Araucaria SP Nov 10 th, around 40 in small flocks were observed at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th and 20 the 14 th. Masked Water-Tyrant (Fluvicola nengeta): One observed at the ponds San Sebastian Lodge Oct 13 th. This species occurs further north in Brazil and is a recent colonizer to northeastern Argentina. Long-tailed Tyrant (Colonia colonus): Two were seen at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and 13 th. Cattle Tyrant (Machetornis rixosa): A few observed on all days from Nov 3 to 7 th and on the 9 th. They were seen in open country at Punta Rasa, Ceibas marshes, El Palmar NP, and Estancia Virocay. A high of 6 was recorded along RP 40 Nov 7 th. Two at were seen on the laws at Iguazu NP Nov 11 and singles were near the ponds at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th and 15 th. Dusky-capped Flycatcher (Myiarchus tuberculifer): One seen well in the shrubby successional area at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th and another heard the 14 th. Northern Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus): One heard at El Palmar NP Nov 6 th another was seen at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus): Small numbers were seen daily along the roadsides in Nov 2 nd to 9 th, a high of 40 Nov 7 th, was estimated along RP40 and the drive to Estancia Virocay. Small numbers were observed daily in Misiones Province Nov 10 th to 15 th. Present in open areas at Iguazu NP, and San Sebastian Lodge. Fork-tailed Flycatcher (Tyrannus savanna): Recorded everyday: over 20 were seen daily at Punta Rasa Nov 2 nd and 3 rd, and hundreds were seen along the roadsides along RP 40 and en route to Estancia Virocay Nov 7 th. Small numbers were observed daily in Misiones Province Nov 10 th to 15 th. Present in open areas at Iguazu NP, and San Sebastian Lodge. (1) Cotingas - Cotingidae Red-ruffed Fruitcrow (Pyroderus scutatus): A nice male was seen at the lek at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 14 th. (2) Manakins Pipridae Swallow-tailed (Blue) Manakin (Chiroxiphia caudata): One observed in the forest canopy near San Sebastian Lodge 13 th and a two heard in the canopy at San Sebastian Lodge Nov14th. Band-tailed Manakin (Pipra fasciicauda): A nice male displaying was watched at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 13 th. Southern Rough-winged Swallow (Stelgidopteryx ruficollis): Small numbers foraged over the ponds at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 15 th. A high of 15 was seen Nov 12 th. Gray-breasted Martin (Progne chalybea): A couple were seen at San Clemente Nov 2, over 20 were seen at Punta Rasa the following day and at El Palmar NP Nov 5 th, and a few were seen at Estancia Virocay Nov 9 th. Small numbers foraged over the ponds at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 15 th. Brown-chested Martin (Progne tapera): Good numbers were seen on all days but Nov 4 th. A high of over 100 was at Ceibas marshes on Nov 5 th. White-rumped Swallow (Tachycineta leucorrhoa): Over 10 were seen in fields along the highway en route to San Clemente Nov 2 nd, over 20 were seen at Punta Rasa Nov 3 rd, and small numbers were seen at El Palmar and Estancia Virocay. Bank Swallow/Sand Martin (Riparia riparia): One was flying with other swallows at the south entrance canal Costanera Sur Nov 1 st. One was at Araucaria SP Nov 10 th, and two were seen at Iguazu Falls NP the next day. (1) Old World Sparrows - Passeridae House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) Introduced: A few were observed around the Puerto Iguazu and park area Nov 10 th and 11 th. Small numbers were seen daily in towns across Patagonia Nov 17 th to 25th. 45

Monkeys Primates Brown Capuchin (Cebus apella): Two small troops of about 7-8 capuchins each, were observed along the Macuco Trail, Iguazu NP Nov 11th. Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya): Heard at Estancia Virocay Nov 9 th. Rodents - Rodentia Azara s Agouti (Dasyprocta azarae): One observed near the beginning of Macuco Trail, Iguazu NP, and two feeding on a trail at Urugua-i NP Nov 12 th. Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochoerus): Around 50 were seen around the Mirador El Palmar and Arroyo Los Loros tracks, and the campsite area at El Palmar NP Nov 5 th and 6 th, and about 20 were seen at the large marsh at Estancia Virocay Nov 8 th. About 10 animals were observed daily around the ponds at San Sebastian Lodge Nov 12 th to 14 th. Coypu (Myocastor coypus): Two were seen at Ceibas marshes Nov 5 th. Plains Viscacha (Lagostomus maximus): Approximately 25 watched grazing on the lawns at the campground in El Palmar in the late evening of Nov 5 th and 20 the 6 th. South American Coati (Nasua nasua): About 10 were seen wandering around the eating areas and paths at Iguazu NP Nov 11 th. Even-toed Ungulates Artiodactyla Red Brocket Deer (Mazama americana): One was watched and photographed crossing the road at El Palmar Nov 6 th. A brocket deer crossed the road near Urugua-I NP Nov 12 th. Red Brocket Deer, El Palmar Reserve Reptiles Striped Worm Lizard (Ophiodes striatus): One was captured along RP 40 Nov 5 th. 47
