1 Conference on OECD Mining Regions Building a network to enhance productivity and well-being AGENDA 5 7 October 2017 Antofagasta, Chile Background Last updated: 29 September 2017.

2 Subnational regions with a major presence in mining and extractive make an important contribution to the economic development of a number of OECD and non-oecd member countries (e.g. Chile, Canada, Australia, the United States, Finland, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Norway). Mining regions have the potential to attract investment and increase productivity, which is necessary to meet the expanding global demand for minerals. In order to fully exploit this potential, national and international policies that take into account the well-being, environmental, and economic diversification needs of mining-based regions and their cities are essential. The challenges and opportunities associated with a mining specialisation tend to be amplified at a regional level. There are variations in terms of how these impacts play out across different rural areas and cities. International experience shows that the mining industry has significant potential to support a long-term development process if a complex and inter-connected set of challenges is addressed. These include: difficulties in diversifying local economies and coping with environmental externalities; managing social issues related to the mining workforce; and combatting rising inequalities. OECD work on regional development is designed to support regions and national government in implementing policies that address these challenges in an integrated way and, in addition, can provide a platform for both knowledge-sharing and action at an international level. Date, time and venue 5-7 October 2017, 9h00, Antofagasta, Chile. Join the conversation on Twitter: follow us Contact Chris McDonald Economist/Policy Analyst OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Local Development and Tourism Miningregions@oecd.org Tel. + (33-1)
