Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña, MAAM: (closed on Mondays) (pag.227) This museum was created in 2005 to preserve the Inca mummies discovered on the Llullaillaco Volcano (22,109 feet above sea level) in These mummies, of three children who were sacrificed during a religious rite five centuries ago, are in an excellent state of preservation. Archaeologists believe that the children were buried alive after being put to sleep with chicha alcohol. They froze to death in their graves, 6700 feet above sea level. They were supposedly brought to the volcano from Cusco, the Inca capital, which is about 1,240 miles away. San Francisco Church Built in the eighteenth century, this church is the most imposing of Salta, with its red and gold facade and its belfry (173 feet tall). Baroque and neoclassical style. San Bernado Convent Although visits are not allowed, one can admire the sumptuous door of this sixteenth century convent, which was carved by the Indians in carob wood. Cerro San Bernardo Overlooking Salta from 883 feet above, this hill is a good spot to get a panoramic view of the city. You can take the cable car to the top. Night Life Salta has a very vibrant night life. Not just the regular discotheques, salteños love the peñas. Some are organized shows, some just places where people meet up to play the guitar and dance folklore. We strongly recommend to mix up with locals and after one or two glasses of delicious Torrontés enjoy dancing like a Gaucho! Here are our favorite peñas: La Casona del Molino Luís Burela 1 (0387) This is the most authentic place for spontaneous peñas, where guests help themselves with the guitars on the walls and play. La Vieja Estación Balcarce 877 (0387) They have an organized show, but is particularly recommended for its great atmosphere. Casa Guemes Caseros 732 (0387) Frequently visited by locals for its good music and food. Noord Argentina Say Hueque 2018 Page 21

44 The Jesuit ruins in San Ignacio Miní diegorayaces, Shutterstock This pleasant small town is an hour by bus from Posadas (63km east on Ruta 12), and home of one of the most important ruined missions. San Ignacio is a large archaeological site where between 1609 and 1818, the Jesuits established one of the most significant and unique social, cultural and religious centres of South American history. Three other missions are in the area: Santa Ana, Nuestra Señora de Loreto and Santa María La Mayor. San Ignacio is also a good base to explore the surrounding countryside, villages and riverscape, and that rarity for most of northern Argentina: hills. Visiting the missions The Interpretive Centre Ruinas de San Ignacio, near the entrance to the ruins (tel: ; open: daily), has displays and installations interpreting the culture and mission lifestyle. There is a very good state of the art 3D sound and light show amid the ruins, a very atmospheric experience on a summer evening. It starts at every day, lasts an hour and costs 30 pesos. A ticket covering all four missions costs 30 pesos and lasts for 15 days. San Ignacio s is very impressive and you can spend a few hours wandering round; there are good multi lingual information lecterns scattered around. Cheap local buses (30 45 minutes, 3 4 pesos) run hourly to Santa Ana and Loreto, or a taxi will charge around 100 pesos to take you to both, including waiting time. The tourist information office on Sarmiento and Rivadavia can give you detailed schedules. Santa María, a couple of hours away, requires a full day excursion. If you re keen on exploring all the missions, it s most convenient if you have your own car. The Jesuits were expelled from the area in 1767, and the missions themselves raided and destroyed by Portuguese and Paraguayan invasions between 1816 and A remarkable civilisation that had prospered for a couple of hundred years was thus destroyed in three. San Ignacio Miní was founded in 1610, and moved to the present site in 1695, growing to a population of 3,300; it remains the best preserved of all the missions, with a central square, church, priest s house, cemetery and over 200 dwellings still in a fair state. The church, 74m long, was an outstanding example of the Guaraní Baroque style, with floral bas reliefs carved into the red sandstone. By the time of their destruction and extinction, the greater mission comprised 30 towns within Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Half of these were in Argentina, with 11 in the territory of Misiones. 45 The social organisation and economic structure are considered unprecedented in the world. The missions structure and stability empowered them to deal with sanitary issues and avoid devastation from plagues, to deter military attack and to maintain a completely self sustaining agricultural economy with advanced skills and trades that provided a high quality of life for all who lived there. For these reasons San Ignacio Miní reached a population of 28,714 inhabitants after its first hundred years. By 1732, the population had reached 141,182. This seeming utopia caused discomfort to the political powers colonising the surrounding countries, and is the reason for the expulsions and attacks. The missions, lost in the jungle, were rediscovered in 1897, but restoration did not begin until the 1940s; in 1984, the best were placed on UNESCO s World Heritage List. Nuestra Señora de Loreto was founded in 1632 and moved in 1686 to the present site, 3km off Ruta 12 about 10km back towards Posadas; although now in a particularly bad state, it is also on the World Heritage List. Santa Ana is 40km from Posadas along Ruta 12 (and 700m from the highway) in the Sierra del Tapé; it was first founded in 1633, but because of attacks by bandits it was abandoned and then re established in The church, cemetery, dwellings and workshops can still be seen. Santa María La Mayor, founded in 1636, is 150km from Posadas on Ruta Provincial 2, between San Javier and Concepción de la Sierra; the walls of the priests dwelling, school and workshops can still be seen. 56 Neighborhoods & Major Sights La Boca The colorful neighborhood, it s probably the most visited and photogenic area of the city. The all colors houses, where immigrants used to live, are now a big attraction on the main street. This working class area originally populated by Italian dock workers has bloomed into a center of art, restaurants and the colorful metal houses which present a refreshing change from the rest of the city. The colors come from the brightly painted houses on the Caminito a pedestrain walk named for the tango of the same name and the waters of the Riachuelo stained by oil sludges. The painter Benito Quinquela Martín was a leading influence in the use of color and his home, now the Museo de Bellas Artes de La Boca, displays his paintings of dock workers. Other art exhibitions can be appreciated at the beautiful Fundación Proa, at the corner of Caminito and Mendoza a not so visited spot where nice views from the river can be appreciated. The most thrilling and visceral experience of any visit to La Boca is probably donning a fluffy blue and yellow hat and bouncing along with the tribal fanatics of Maradona s beloved team.the intoxicating display of the leaping and singing multitude is often more exciting than the game on the pitch. The football stadium (Baca Juniors), just a couple of blocks from the main street, has tours inside but always better to assist to a game. San Telmo This section of the city retains some of the colonial flavor of past years and is steeped in the city s history. It was a fashionable district for years until a yellow fever epidemic drove the inhabitants north into what is now the Recoleta, and the lower classes and immigrants moved in. Its construction began in 1873 on the site of a fort the ruins of which can be seen from inside the Casa Rosada itself and the Plaza de Mayo. The historical balcony, which faces the Plaza, is from 1900 and for the Argentinians represents more than a simple balcony. It is the symbol of the institutional power and witness of the most important events, famous due to the speeches of President Juan Peron and his wife Eva Peron. The center of the plaza features an obelisk called the Pirámide de Mayo, erected to commemorate independence from Spain. Grand 19th century buildings line the plaza, but the colonial arches that once circled the plaza are long gone. Nearby are the Cabildo (from the Colony), the city council building, the Cathedral (were the rests of San Martin, the national hero of the independence are) and fine bank buildings. Following refurbishment works, the 2,000 m² (21,000 ft²) El Ateneo Grand Splendid became the group s flagship store, and in 2007 sold over 700,000 books; over a million people walk through its doors annually. Chairs are provided throughout the building, including the still intact theatre boxes, where customers can dip into books before purchase, and there is now a café on the back of what was once the stage. The ceiling, the ornate carvings, the crimson stage curtains, the auditorium lighting and many architectural details remain. 79 AN INTRODUCTION TO OUR GRAFFITI TOUR IN BUENOS AIRES In Argentina, going back to the 1920's the act of painting on the wall was utilized for political endorsement, as many political parties paid individuals to paint propaganda messages on high traffic walls in support of their candidate, especially before elections. In 1969 the arrival of aerosol paints to the country was received under the context of a different military government. The new material allowed messages to be written much faster than before. Between 1972 and 1976 the proliferance of graffiti grew at its fastest rate to that point, as the Argentine people became progressively more involved in the act of protest and social conflict. These sprayings were what are called "pintadas" messages written in plain text with little or no artistic influence, only the content mattered, not the style. During this period graffiti became consumed with political confrontation and often carried the rallying cry of popular protest songs. With the end of the dictatorship in 1983, the first "graffiteros" started to paint ironic sayings and phrases of dark humor that in those days were referred to as "pintadas". Phrases saying things such as "La semana santa es una huelga eclesiástica" (The holy week is an ecclesiastical strike) and "Morirse no es nada, lo triste es vivir en Argentina" (Dying is nothing, the saddest thing is living in Argentina) began to become more prominent. What s more, before leaving the city you can give the card to another traveler to use it after you. 85 Top 10 foods to try in Argentina Asado The way to Argentina s heart is through its asado, or barbecue. Also known as parrillada, it is a crime to leave the country without spending a leisurely afternoon beside the warmth of a grill or open fire, feasting on copious grilled meats. This is the national dish, originating with the country s gauchos, or cowboys, who would subsist on the abundant cows dotting the country s plains. Expect to find beef, pork, ribs, sausages, blood sausages, and sweetbreads hot off the fire. In Patagonia, look out for a whole lamb or pig roasting over an open flame. Lightly salted, topped with chimichurri, and paired with Malbec this is Argentina. Chimichurri Chimichurri is the country s go to condiment. A green salsa made of finely chopped parsley, oregano, onion, garlic, chilli pepper flakes, olive oil and a touch of acid, like lemon or vinegar, chimichurri is as engendered here as the River Delta. This tangy, garlickly salsa is sometimes used as a marinade, though most often it s blanketing grilled meats and heaps of other savoury foods throughout the country. Provoleta Argentineans give whole new meaning to grilled cheese with provoleta. A consequence of the significant Italian immigration to Argentina, provoleta is the country s variant on provolone cheese. Pungent and sharp, sliced discs are topped with herbs, like oregano and chilli flakes then grilled. The nearly melted cheese is crispy and slightly caramelised on the outside, gooey and smokey on the interior. Top it off with a drizzle of olive oil, or a spoonful of chimichurri. Dulce de leche Cows roaming Argentina s expansive grasslands have not only provided the country with phenomenal beef, but also dairy. And it is from condensed milk that Argentina gets one of its culinary treasures, dulce de leche. Loosely translated as milk jam, this thick caramel is the result of condensed milk, reduced slowly until sweetened and sticky. Look for in it everything from alfajores, to dessert empanadas, to another national favorite, helado (or, ice cream) where it is liberally drizzled in and downed by the kilo full. Alfajores Noord Argentina Say Hueque 2018 Page 85

86 Argentina is the world s largest consumer of alfajores: crumbly shortbread like biscuits sandwiching jams, mousses or dulce de leche. The alfajores roots lie in the Arab world, brought to southern Spain by the Moors. Spaniards later carried the sweets to Argentina and no one has looked back since. Akin to their national cookie, Argentines indulge in these cylindrical biscuits at breakfast, dessert, and throughout the day and across the country. Empanadas Matambre arrollado Another gift from the Moors to the Spanish and finally, to the Argentineans, where this hot, cheap and portable meal was popular amongst working classes. Like a South American pasty, empanadas are deep fried or baked, then filled with sweet and savoury stuffing, depending on the province. Dessert empanadas are commonly packed with quince jam, sweet potato paste, or dulce de leche, and sprinkled with cinnamon, sugar or sweet raisins, as is typical in Cordoba. Savoury empanadas hug stewed and spiced ground beef, chicken, goats meat, cheese and/or vegetables, with the markings on the pastry fold identifying the treasures inside. While the thick, slabs of Argentinean meat are not to be missed, at least once, opt for a matambre arrollado. This super slim cut of beef, like a flank steak, is thinly sliced then stuffed with vegetables, hard boiled eggs, herbs and olives. The meat is rolled around the filling, then boiled, baked or grilled. Matambre translates literally to hunger killer and arrollado as to roll up. The story goes that owing to the thin cuts of meat, these are often the first meats ready on the grill, staving off hunger while waiting for the rest of the asado to catch up. Yerba mate It was indigenous populations in South America that first used and cultivated yerba mate, prior to European colonization. A herbal and caffeine infused drink, you ll find it filling everything from to go cups to shallowed out squash gourds across the country. In Argentina, each person consumes five kilos of yerba mate, annually. Leaves from the yerba mate plant are dried, chopped and ground into a powder, or steeped as whole leaves into hot water. Drinking yerba mate is a social practice and the gourd, fitted with a metal straw that doubles as a sieve, is often passed around a group, each person sipping before passing. 87 Choripán A pre requisite before any football match, a go to amongst taxi drivers, and a mainstay at markets and from street vendors, choripán is the ultimate Argentinean street food. Made with pork and beef chorizo cooked over charcoal or wood flames, the sausage is grilled then butterflied down the centre, topped with chimichurri, and served between slices of crusty bread. Depending on the province, caramelised onions, pickled aubergines, green peppers and a host of other condiments are also added. Another gaucho tradition the choripán has experienced a rural to urban shift that has placed it firmly on the country s culinary map. Carbonada During cooler months in Argentina, carbonada is a staple, stick to your ribs dish. A savoury, meaty, brothy stew, carbonada is made of meat, potatoes (sweet and white), corn on the cob, carrots, peppers, bacon and then topped with fruits, ranging from dried apricots and raisins to peaches, pears and green grapes. The stew is spooned into a hollowed out pumpkin that is placed on the barbecue to cook. Throughout the country, different variants on the carbonada are found and it can even make its way into empanadas where it takes the form of the ultimate, portable stew.
