However, the best among them is the Turtle Sanctuary Beach where one can reach by a boat and spend a day with their loved ones. One can also choose to go for Island hopping tours in Malaysia, wherein travelers can explore the hidden beauty of nature. There are about 10 Malaysian Islands that are accessible to travelers. 2 Chapter 2 : Malaysia Maps - Malaysia Travel Information Discover things to do, places to go, events to attend and more for VISIT MALAYSIA at the Tourism Malaysia official site. Travelers can see wildlife, rainforests, tumbling waterfalls, beaches and sea stacks. The biggest attraction in the park is the bizarre, obscene-nosed proboscis monkey, though they are rare and difficult to spot. It also has great nature trails, from easy strolls to full-day hikes through the jungle, so all visitors should be able to find one that suits them. Built by the Dutch in the midth century, it is the oldest functioning Protestant church in Malaysia. Among them are a bell cast in ; tombstones, written in Portuguese that are incorporated into the church floor, and a brass Bible stand. It is now an Anglican church. Kinabatangan River Kinabatangan River is the second longest river in Malaysia, stretching nearly km miles from the mountains to Sulu Sea. Located in Sabah state on Borneo, the Kinabatangan River is known for its diverse wildlife and vegetation. Sipadan has more than 3, species of fish and hundreds of different corals, all waiting to be explored. Divers may come across hawksbill and green turtles, manta rays, schools of barracudas and whale sharks. The island also has nice sandy beaches. It has a population of more than 34, people consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups. The Cameron Highlands is renowned for its trails. They lead visitors through the forest to waterfalls and other tranquil spots. Due to strict controls, George Town retains many of its colonial-era shophouses to this day. It is officially recognized as having a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in Southeast Asia. The town truly springs to life in the evenings, when most of the locals head to the nearby street hawkers to have their meals and drinks. Several trails enable the visitor to explore the forest without a guide. Taman Negara is a haven for endangered species such as the Asian elephant, tigers, leopards and rhinos, but numbers are low and sightings are very rare. Tourists have surged to the island ever since, seeking a taste of paradises. The island is surrounded by numerous white coral reefs, making it a haven for scuba divers while the interior is densely forested. Visitors outnumber villagers outside the monsoon November to February, but Tioman can be virtually deserted at other times. The mountain is known worldwide for its tremendous botanical and biological species biodiversity. Over species of ferns, species of birds, and mammalian species have been identified at Mount Kinabalu and its surrounding. The main peak of the mountain can be climbed easily by a person with a good physical condition, and requires no mountaineering equipment although climbers must be accompanied by guides at all times. However, the towers are still the tallest twin buildings in the world. The Petronas Twin Towers feature a sky bridge between the two towers on the 41st and 42nd floors. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of about 65,, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. The most popular beaches can be found on the west coast with a wide choice of restaurants and eateries and some of the best resorts in Langkawi. The Perhentian Islands are the must-go place in Malaysia for budget travelers. Both the islands have palm-fringed white sandy beaches and turquoise blue sea. Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation opened in for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations and illegal hunting. The orphaned orangutans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready. About 60 to 80 orangutans are living free in the reserve. The park encompasses incredible caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. The Sarawak chamber found in one of the underground caves is the largest cave chamber in the world. It has been said that the chamber is so big that it could accommodate about 40 Boeing s, without overlapping their wings. The enormous colony of Wrinkle-lipped bats in the nearby Deer Cave exit almost every evening in search of food in a spectacular exodus. You Might Also Like. Page 2

Calendar of Event About Malaysia Located at the Southeast region of Asia, Malaysia is a country which is the home to a multi-racial community. Malaysia is made up of thirteen states and has three federal territories. Malaysia is considered as one of the many countries in Asia which is frequented by thousands of tourists annually. The breath-taking landscapes and islands are among the top attractions in Malaysia that keeps visitors coming. Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, also attracts many local and foreign tourists as it is the place for shopping, dining and delving into the multi-ethnic community of the people here. In fact, the number of tourists who comes each year is so huge in number that Malaysia is the 11th most visited country in the world. Malaysia has a tropical climate of a temperature ranging from 20 to 30 celcius. Malaysia is a humid place as it is in close proximity to waters. The climate in most places in Malaysia is hot and dry with an exception for highland areas. During the monsoon season, the coastline of Peninsular of Malaysia is most affected. Peninsular Malaysia has an average rainfall of mm but escalates in East Malaysia with mm of rain. The weather in Malaysia can be summarized as hot and humid in the day and its nights are cool. Overview Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia. It is the second largest state by population in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur started off as a tin-mining town but today, it is a 21st century metropolis which is populated by myriads of skyscrapers and is the focus of many international trade and commerce. The one place that should not be missed is Bukit Bintang. Located at the heart of the Golden Triangle of majestic city of Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Bintang district first started off along Jalan Bukit Bintang but slowly expanded to its surrounding areas. Day or night, rain or shine, Bukit Bintang is always full of people from all walks of life. The myriads of al-fresco cafes, posh restaurants, lavish bars, bustling hawker centres and multilevel shopping centres such as the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center KLCC and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur are the main attractions that draw throngs and throngs of tourists and locals to this area. However, the largest of them all is none but the Midvalley Megamall of Kuala Lumpur. If you would like to get hold of some good bargains and great street food, head over to Chinatown Petaling Street. Hundreds and thousands of stalls are set up here at the Petaling Street. You can find almost anything here. Where ever you walk, you will find good food. There are various types of parks with varying themes. The water park is very full during the weekends so be sure to get there early to avoid disappointment. Sunway Pyramid has thousands of shops in it varying from local to international brands. Sunway Pyramid is also the only place in Malaysia with an ice skating rink. If you are interested to try ice skating, you should head on over to Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. They are beautifully arranged and decorated over the trees for visitors to take photos. These lights are only turned on at night, so be sure to get there at night. Shopping can also be done in Selangor. One of the famous shopping mall is The Curve Damansara. The Curve has quite a number of shops in it but its main attraction is its flea market which is held every weekend. It also has an extensive range of restaurants where you can dine at. The Apartment is a restaurant that should not be missed. Its fish dishes and cocktails are simply to die for. Ikea, is connected with the Ikano Power Center. Thus, you can do some furniture shopping and then move to Ikano Power Center for groceries. Up north is the state of Penang. Penang is divided into the Penang Island and Butterworth. There is not much at Butterworth but it is totally the opposite on the Island of Penang. One of the famous places to visit is the Batu Feringghi Beach where tourists can enjoy some water sports and some sun bathing. Tourists can choose to stay at the Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion. Though all his mansions were lavishly built and decorated, the Blue mansion along Leith Street is by far the most elaborate and lavish. The Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion is a boutique hotel that can be booked as accommodation and even for wedding reservations. Other than the impressive architectures that you can see at the Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion, you can also visit the Khoo Kongsi to view its magnificent clan house which is located at the southwest of Georgetown. Right at the entrance of the Kek Lok Si Temple is the famous asam laksa shop. Do not forget to try it out. Kek Lok Si temple is made up of many stalls and is a pagoda which is ascended in a spiral manner. As you reach the top, you will be able Page 3

4 to witness the view of Penang. The Penang Hill is located in the center of Georgetown. The only way to access the hill is via the Penang Hill Railway which will bring you up meters to the top of the hill. There are various flora and fauna at the top of the hill. If your stomach starts to growl for food, you should head on over to Gurney Drive. You can enjoy various famous delicacies of Penang there. After filling up your stomach, you can take a stroll along the seaside or at the Gurney Mall which is just beside Gurney Drive. Pahang is located in the center of Malaysia. Attractions here are more nature-related especially the Taman Negara which is a national park where you can explore and see wild animals and unique floras. You can also rent a chalet here and stay a few days to fully explore the park. For some strawberries and fresh vegetables, you should head on over to Cameron Highlands. There are strawberry farms where you can choose and pluck your own strawberries. At the night market, you can also buy back fresh vegetable at a very low price. If you are in the mood for some theme park rides, you should go to Genting Highlands. After than on your way down, you can drop by and visit the Bukit Tinggi resort as well. The Cherating beach in Kuantan is a beautiful beach where you can plan a picnic and enjoy some water sports. Pahang is also the place where the best durians and ginger are grown. Thus, do not miss out on that. At the south of Malaysia is the state of Johor. The state of Johor is the nearest to Singapore and is famous for its beaches and islands. The Rawa Island is an exclusive island which has not been visited by many. Its pristine waters and scenery is one of the many things to look forward to when you are there. Since Johor is just surrounded by water, you will be able to feast on the freshest seafood. The place to go is Mersing. Here you can eat various types of seafood and you can also choose to stay over at the hotels found here. If you want to have a look at the more developed part of Johor, you can go to Danga Bay. Many concerts are held here and on the weekends, there are live performances for the public to watch. Since Danga Bay is near the sea, you can enjoy some sea breeze while enjoying the music from the performances on stage there. There are just so many other attractions in each and every state in Malaysia. In the north are the state of Kedah and Perlis. In Kedah for instance, the most famous place is the Langkawi Island. There you can visit the Oriental Village Langkawi, the Lang Square Langkawi where you can take photos of the beautiful scenery and the renowned landmark of Langkawi which is the eagle and also learn and watch unique marine creatures at the Pulau Payar Marine Park. Perlis is a small state in the north with a decent amount of attractions which include the snake and reptile farm, the Kota Kayang Museum and the Gua Kelam Dark Cave. Moving downwards and just beside Kuala Lumpur is Negeri Sembilan. This is a place where you should go for a short trip if you are near Kuala Lumpur. Port Dickson is a famous beach among tourists. Locals love to come here over the weekend for a short getaway. Port Dickson is also a popular place to organize team building camps as many of the resorts here are equipped with many obstacle courses. There are two towns in Negeri Sembilan and they are Seremban and Nilai. Right beside Negeri Sembilan is the historical city of Malacca. Malacca is rich is cultures from the occupation of the Portuguese and British and the remains from the occupation back then can still be seen at the Stadhuys, Maritime Museum Malacca and A Famosa. The Baba Nyonya community has long existed in Malacca since the Chinese traders came to Malacca to trade spices and silk. Some of them got married to the Malay women of Malacca and there you have it, the baba and nyonya community. Great food can be found at the Jonker Street. For Portuguese style dishes, they can be found at the Portuguese Square Malacca. Here you can enjoy seafood cooked in the Portuguese way. For seafood cooked the Malay way, you can try eating at Muara Sungai Duyung. The variety and freshness of the seafood is beyond compare. The East Coast of Malaysia, especially Terengganu is most renowned for its islands. Page 4

5 Chapter 4 : Places to Visit in Malaysia Malaysia Travel Rough Guides Here are links to my free Malaysia Maps (click on the image or links). Some image of Malaysia Maps will take a while to load due to the size of the image. I try to leave the resolution of the Malaysia Maps as high as possible so that it will be detailed. The initial run was between Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh with a travel time of just over 2 hours. With the completion of the railway electrification and double-tracking from Padang Besar to Gemas, the ETS has been extended to the rest of the electrified line, offering fast connection between destinations with travel time comparable to or even faster than a bus. However, the introduction of the ETS spelled the end of diesel train services including sleeper services on the electrified line. The southern unelectrified line between Gemas and Johor Bahru is still served by diesel trains with only 2nd class seats. A change of trains between the ETS and diesel trains is required to continue north or south of Gemas. The original "Jungle Train" is the slow daytime service which stops at every station every min or so. The eastern line night train between JB Sentral and Tumpat for which reservations are possible and recommended also have 2nd class berths and seats, and some have 1st class sleepers too. Gasoline or locally known as Petrol is slightly cheaper than market prices at RM2. Tolls are payable on expressways, but these are priced at varying degrees, ranging from expensive to reasonable: While you can drive from Singapore to Thailand within a day on the West Coast, the highway system is considerably less developed on the East Coast, with no expressways, and even less so in Sabah and Sarawak in which the Pan Borneo Highway is still in construction, so be sure to factor in additional travel time if travelling in those areas. Toll prices for highways and causeways inside major cities, especially Kuala Lumpur, is priced exorbitantly ranging from RM4. Both party maps is contributed by the amazing non-profit group of people who share a common passion to make a gps maps of Malaysia. While driving quality and habits in Malaysia are better than most of the rest of Southeast Asia, it is not necessarily great, especially if for travellers coming from a Western country. Traffic in Malaysia drives on the left, a legacy left by the British. It should be advised, beware of reckless motorcyclists, especially during the night, and especially if you are a pedestrian: As a motorist, at traffic lights, they will accumulate in front of you - let them drive away first to avoid accidents. Care is needed when driving in larger cities, such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Problems include apparently suicidal motorcyclists, congested traffic lanes throughout the day, and bewildering roads especially in the older parts of the city where planning was virtually nonexistent by the then British colonial occupier. Out of town however, cars and motorcycles are the best and sometimes the only way to explore the country. As expected, most rental agencies will require a valid drivers licence to be presented upon rental. Fuel levels are often compared before and after rental, as well as for damage, so ensure everything is documented, and request a refund of any excess fuel if possible. The bigger car rental companies like Hertz and Avis may also require you to have a valid credit card where a deposit will be authorised but not deducted from unless there is damage to the car. Taxis are available in all cities and larger towns, although in smaller places you may have to call one ask any shopkeeper or consult the yellow-pages. You will generally need to negotiate the fare in advance, although prepaid coupon taxis are usually available at airports. RM5 should suffice for a short cross-town trip, while RM is enough to hire a taxi for a full day. It is recommended for travelers to use the ride-sharing apps such as Grab since they are cheaper than the regular taxi most of the time. Their vehicles are clean and more comfortable than normal taxis, and their drivers friendly and professional. Charges are standard and you will not risk getting cheated by taxi drivers. Such apps are often the preferred option for locals, revolutionising the industry. In response, the government officially legalised them in June, so they are regulated and co-exist alongside taxis. If you choose to use taxis, take note of the advise below to avoid getting cheated. In Kuala Lumpur, the budget taxis are usually coloured Red and White City taxi - these taxis are not allowed to travel out of the city e. The Red-White taxis can be hailed off the roads and are metered. Ensure that the taxi driver is a Malaysian all drivers must have a taxi permit and license with their photo on it before you board, as unscrupulous taxi owners have been known to rent their taxi out to unlicensed stand-ins. All taxi drivers must be Malaysian or a PR holder as the Malaysian government does not issue work visa to Page 5

6 foreigners to drive taxis. They can literally take you for a ride. There will be touts at the airports offering travellers their taxi service, even pretending to be legitimate. As unbelievable as it may sound, some have been known to rob first time visitors hundreds of ringgit for a single trip into the city, charging times more than the correct fare. Never take taxis from anyone that solicits directly. They will always claim to be legitimate but are rarely licensed and may be unsafe. The taxi operator booths can provide you with receipts. Another tip is to book your taxis in advance. If travelling in an unlicensed taxi you may not be covered by your travel insurance should that taxi be involved in a mishap. Taxi Meter Rate as of Red Taxi Budget Taxi: In Kuala Lumpur, the 8am to 10am, 12pm to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm are the busy time in the city. Insist on using the meter and if the driver refuses, just find another taxi or take the train. By bus[ edit ] Report Bad Drivers Bus drivers especially on more "rural" routes sometimes drive carelessly, speed like maniacs, overtake on blind corners, etc. These numbers are conveniently pasted on the back of every single large vehicle in the country. The cheapest way to travel in Malaysia is by bus. All towns of any size have a bus terminal offering connections to other parts of the country. If travelling on holidays or even over the weekend, it is advisable to reserve your seats in advance. The Indonesian language, spoken accross the border in Indonesia, is similar to Malay, and both languages are largely mutually intelligible. Some parts of Malaysia near the Thai border, most notably Kelantan, have dialects of Malay which are nearly incomprehensible to speakers of standard Malay, though most people in these areas will be able to converse in standard Malay if needed. English is compulsory in all schools and widely spoken in the larger cities, as well as around the main tourist attractions, although in rural areas a little Malay will come in handy. In general, police stations and government offices will have English-speaking staff on duty. Arabic is taught to those who attend Islamic religious schools, and many clerics as well as other very observant Muslims will have a functional command of Arabic. However, it is not widely spoken, though the Malay language does have a large number of loan words from Arabic. You also might notice some examples of Malay written with Arabic letters. This is called Jawi, and it is still used for religious publications and inscriptions, especially in states like Kelantan, although the Latin alphabet is much more commonly used throughout the country. Mandarin is taught in most Chinese schools while Cantonese is commonly heard in the mass media due to the popularity of TVB serials from Hong Kong among the Chinese community, so many are conversant in both, in addition to their native language. In the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia bordering Thailand, there are various ethnic Thai communities, known locally as the Orang Siam, who speak various dialects of Thai. Malacca in the south is also home to a Portuguese community which speaks a Portuguese based creole. The remote forest areas of Peninsular Malaysia are also home to various tribal people known as the Orang Asli, who speak various indigenous languages such as Semelai, Temuan and many others. In East Malaysia several indigenous languages are also spoken, especially Iban and Kadazan. Films and television programmes are usually shown in their original language with Malay subtitles. There are many different types of expeditions available, ranging from those where you hardly lose sight of the hotel to those where you are fully immersed in the jungle with only the guide and yourself if you are willing to pay the money! Tours vary from about 4 days to 2 weeks or more. Do note that in Eastern Malaysia hiking without guides is often not possible even for easy trails, with the notable exception on Bako national park.
