After an hour's drive, you'll arrive at the Miraflores Locks, where a visitor centre helps you to understand the impressive 20th century engineering. Then you'll explore Panama's colonial quarter, Casco Antiguo, and have lunch there. This lovely area was awarded Unesco World Heritage status in In the afternoon, wander the side streets of this stunning district, and discover the various colonial era churches, the Plaza de Francia and Plaza Bolivar. Take a look at the shops and craft stalls. Come tour the new Agua Clara locks. The watchtower, which stands 60 m above sea level, offers an unbeatable view over Lake Gatún and the new Panama Canal locks. Continue on to the village of Portobelo on the Caribbean coast, the final stop on the Camino Real, the path the Spaniards used to ship goods between Panama and the Caribbean. Explore the old customs house building, the ruins of various forts and the Black Christ Church. Come and see the Agua Clara locks. The watchtower, which stands 60 m above sea level, offers an unbeatable view over Lake Gatún and the new Panama Canal locks. Next, you will visit the ruins of San Lorenzo fort, full of history from the days of the pirates. Amongst the old stones and cannons, the atmosphere of pirate life and the buccaneer spirit lives on! Colon / The Embera Indians (1/2 day) * Day 3 - Thursday San Blas / the Kuna Indians (1/2 day, morning) * Cartagena / Colombian National Aviary (half-day) * Just a short distance from "civilisation" lies the Embera community, who still live entirely by tradition, building with natural fiber and palm leaves, wearing multicolored loinclothes and painting their bodies. You will travel by bus to Lake Alajuela, then take a 45-minute ride in a pirogue up a river that leads to their village. As you sit on the ground, you will observe their daily routiens and learn about their way of life and culture, which mesh perfectly and sustainably with their environment. In addition to its extraordinary vistas, this archipelago is also home to the Kuna Indians. Ride a "cayuco", a motorised pirogue, to visit a village and learn about their customs. Bring along some dollars to buy handicrafts, including "molas", the renowned embroidered fabric of the Kunas. Set a course for the charming Baru Island to visit the Colombian National Aviary. This protected enclave surrounded by gorgeous landscapes, palm trees and waterfalls is home to 1,900 bird species. Your guided botanical tour through this stunning park will take you to various observation stations to discover the bird species which live in the different areas. You will begin your tour at the 17th-century Fort San Felipe de Barajas, a symbol of Spain's military genius in South America. Next, you will head to the old town and stroll through its streets and patios, passing by Simón Bolivar Square and the Church of San Pedro Claver to admire its splendid "Republican" architecture. The trip includes a stop at Las Bovedas, a former prison now devoted to handicraft, and a bus tour of the Boca Grande residential neighbourhood before returning to the ship. After a stop at the home of Rafael Nũnez, former president of Colombia and composer of its national anthem, this panoramic grand tour by carriage (4 people per carriage) will take you to the fortified city, beyond the paved streets and plazas. A unique opportunity to appreciate the wonders of the tropical waters. Dive as far as 50 metres below the surface of the deep blue sea in a high-tech submarine.
