Overnight stay. DAY 2 CITY TOUR After breakfast at around 9 am your city tour begins. You will visit the historical center to see sights like the Zócalo (the Place of the Constitution) one of the world s largest city squares, the Cathedral Metropolitana, the National Palace and the National Museum of Anthropology. In the afternoon you will drive to Xochimilco, the Place where Flowers Grow, to enjoy a boat trip through the famous canals (price not included). Afterwards return to your hotel and overnight stay. DAY 3 TEOTIHUACÁN After breakfast you will visit the ancient city of Teotihuacán, located about 60 km north of Mexico City. This complex of pyramids was once Mesoamerica s greatest city. The original name remains a mystery, but the Aztecs named it the City of Gods when they found it as they could not believe that humans have built suchgrand structures. Climbing the pyramids you will have an incredible view over the whole territory. On your way back to Mexico City you will stop at the Basílica of Guadalupe to see illustrations of the patron of Mexico, la Virgen de Guadalupe, also known as the Virgin Mary. Overnight stay. DAY 2 MEXICO CITY QUERÉTARO SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE You will leave Mexico City in the morning and go to Querétaro. You will have a guided city tour of Querétaro where you will see the important colonial sites that make this city a world heritage site. The city is known for the Aqueduct ( Los Arcos ) that runs right through it. In the afternoon you will continue to San Miguel de Allende, a historic city of great civil and religious architecture from the colonial period. Overnight stay. DAY 3 SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE - DOLORES HIDALGO - GUANAJUATO After breakfast and some free time to explore the city and walk through the streets and alleys you will continue to Guanajuato, an old mining town that is located beautifully in the mountains. On your way you will visit the town Dolores Hidalgo where the Mexican independence movement began. In Guanajuato, you can visit the Museum of Don Quixote which is unique in the world, different churches and a mine. Besides that, the old building of the university is worth a visit and the cemetry of mummies. Overnight stay. DAY 4 GUANAJUATO ZACATECAS After breakfast we will depart to Zacatecas, a beautiful mining city with a stunning cathedral and a wonderful city center. We will have a panoramic view over the city from the Cerro de la Bufa, we will desccend in a cable car and visit the mine of Eden. Optionally we recommend to visit the Museums Rafael and Pedro Coronel and Francisco Goitia. Overnight stay. DAY 5 ZACATECAS GUADALAJARA Breakfast. Afterwards we will go to Guadalajara, the cradle of Mariachi and Tequila, emblems of Mexico in the whole world. Visit the neighbourhood of Tlaquepaque which is famous for producing the finest handcrafts in the state. Here you will also find the galery of the famous sculptor Sergio Bustamante. 11

12 You can have lunch in one of the tipical Mexican restaurants with a group of Mariachi acompanying your meal with music. If time allows it, you will make a visit to the Ranch of Vicente Fernández, a famous Mexican singer. Overnight stay. DAY 6 GUADALAJARA TEQUILA GUADALAJARA Breakfast. In the morning you will have a guided tour of the city where you will see sights like the Theatre Degollado, the Cathedral, the Palace of Government with some splendid murals from the artist Orozco, the Plaza Tapatía and others. Later on we will go to the village of Tequila, home to the most important destilleries of the liquor Tequila in the world. We will go through the huge fields of agaves, the plant from which Tequila is made. Finally we will go to one of the destilleries to learn about the process of producing this beverage. Return to Guadalajara and overnight stay. DAY 7 GUADALAJARA PÁTZCUARO MORELIA Breakfast. Today you will get to know the town of Pátzcuaro, which means the door to heaven in the indigenous language of the region. The town is known for its colonial beauty combined with the beautiful location of being situated right on the coast of Lake Pátzcuaro. The historical center, the miraculous Basilica of Our Lady of Health, the House of the 11 Patios and the Island of Janitzio are worth a visit. In the city center you find a lot of cafés and restaurants with Mexican and international cuisine. We will continue to Morelia in the state of Michoacán, yet another colonial city. Overnight stay. DAY 8 MORELIA MEXICO CITY After breakfast you will see this beautiful city, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have a guided walking tour and see the colonial buildings made out of pink quarry stones: the Cathedral, the Government s Palace, the main square and the aqueduct. Besides learning about the personal life of Diego and Frida, you also get an insight in the Mexican lifestyle of the first half of the 20th century. Afterwards you will visit Trotsky s House Museum and you will be invited for lunch in one of the typical restaurants on the main Plaza Hidalgo. After a short walk through Frida Kahlo s park you will continue to the Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli to admire Diegos private collection of prehispanic artefacts and his studio. Afterwards your tour will take you to the Dolores Olmedo House Museum, which contains the worlds largest collection of Frida s and Diego s work. Afterwards return to your hotel and overnight stay. DAY 4 DIEGO S TOUR After breakfast you will drive to Zócalo, also known as the symbol of power and the heart of the country, where you will visit Mexico City s Cathedral. Here you 14

15 can admire the synthesis of Spanish and native art. Afterwards you will continue to visit the National Palace with its historical court yard and depictions of Mexican life in the fabulous murals of Diego Rivera. Your visit of Zócalo will end with a visit of the only archaelogical zone in the centre, the Temple Mayor. Afterwards your tour will pass by at Frida s high school (San Ildefonco), the place where she first met Diego Rivera, before going to the Ministry of Education. Some of Rivera s most interesting murals were created here. Your next stop will be at the local Mexican restaurant Historia Santa Domingo to try the delicious national dish of Mexico, Chiles en Nogada. After lunch you will continue to the National Museum of Art to see some of Frida s and Diego s work and the Palace of Fine Arts (Palacio de Bellas Artes), one of Mexico City s biggest and conspicuious public buildings build during the Porfirio periods. The palace is also home of the famous mural Man at the Crossroads and the National Institute of Fine Arts has occupied the great domed building since Its collection also includes paintings by Rufino Tamayo and David Alfaro Siqueiro. Afterwards return to your hotel and overnight stay. * Optional for Wednesday nights: Ballet Folklorico in the Palace of Fine Arts, which is internationally recognized as one of the most exciting traditional dance groups. Enjoy a journey through Mexican history including rythmical dances and colourful costumes. DAY 5 SAN ÁNGEL After breakfast you will begin your tour by visiting the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the worlds most famous museums, where you can find numerous pre-colonial treasures that influenced the work of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The first floor is dedicated to Mexico s pre-hispanic period, whereas the second floor houses modern work of the pre-hispanic civilization. In the entrance hall you can find murals by contemporary artists, like Rivera s students O Gorman and Chavez Morado. Afterwards you will continue to the National University UNAM where can admire works by O Gorman and Diego River s decoration of the Olympic Stadium, before you will drive to San Ángel. In San Ángel you will visit Diego Rivera s studio, which is now an art gallery and cultural center. Here you can also find excellent restaurants and boutiques, which offer Mexican handcraft. In the afternoon you will have time to visit the Museum of Modern Art. On your way back to your hotel you will stop at Chapultepec Park to enjoy the atmosphere. Overnight stay. 15

18 TOUR MODULES THE HIGHLIGHTS OF CHIAPAS 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS DAY 1 TUXTLA GUTIERREZ - CAÑON DEL SUMIDERO - SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS You will be picked up at the airport or bus station in Tuxtla Gutierrez and drive to Cahuaré, wher you will hop on a motor boat to see the impressive Cañon del Sumidero (two hours). Afterwards you will visit the charming colonial city Chiapa de Corzo and have lunch in a typical restaurant before you continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas to check in at your hotel. Overnight stay. DAY 2 INDIAN TOWNS After breakfast at around 9 am your day starts with the visit of the indigenous Maya Market of San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo and Charity Church. Afterwards you will drive to the Mayan villages Chamula and Zinacantan to experience the daily life, including special rituals and ceremonies in the church of Chamula. You will get to know more about shamanism, religion and the Mayan cosmology. Furthermore, you will visit families in Zinacantan to see women producing textiles and have traditional Mayan lunch before you return to San Cristóbal to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. DAY 3 SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS - AGUA AZUL - MISOL HÁ - PALENQUE After breakfast you will start early in the direction of Ocosingo where you will visit the huge archaelogical site of Toniná to admire the architecture and Maya art exhibited in the beautiful museum. Afterwards you will continue to the beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul to enjoy the view or even take a swim in the clear water. After lunch in a local restaruant you will continue to Palenque, visiting the waterfall Misol Há on your way. Check in at your hotel in Palenque and overnight stay. DAY 4 PALENQUE - VILLAHERMOSA After breakfast you will visit the ruins of Palenque, which is one of the most important and biggest ancient cities of the Maya world. The mangificent architecture and art of the Temple of Inscriptions, Palace, Temple of the Sun, Foliage Cross, Temple of the Cross and Ball court can be admired. After exploring the beautiful temples and ball courts you will have lunch in a local restaurant in Comitan and continue to San Vicente River to see the biggest waterfall of Chiapas, El Chiflón. 21 DAY 4 SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS - AGUA AZUL - MISOL HÁ - PALENQUE After breakfast you will start early in the direction of Ocosingo where you will visit the huge archaelogical site of Toniná to admire the architecture and Maya art exhibited in the beautiful museum. Afterwards you will continue to the beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul to enjoy the view or even take a swim in the clear water. DAY 5 PALENQUE - BONAMPAK YAXCHILAN - PALENQUE Today you start early again and have breakfast on the road on your way to the jungle. You will visit Bonampak to admire important mural paintings of the Mayan culture before you drive to Frontera Corozal. There you will take a motor boat ride over the river towards Yaxchilan, a wonderful site surrounded by the Lacandon Jungle. After you explored the steles, carvings and the remarkable architecture you will have lunch before you return to Palenque. Overnight stay. DAY 6 PALENQUE - VILLAHERMOSA After breakfast you will visit the archaeological site of Palenque, which is one of the most important and biggest ancient cities of the Maya world. The magnificent architecture and art of the Temple of Inscriptions, Palace, Temple of the Sun, Foliage Cross, Temple of the Cross and Ball court can be admired. Inside the Pyramid of the Inscription archaeologists found the only tomb ever found in a pyramid in Mexico. Today, your private transportation will take you to the village of La Fortuna, located at the foot of the Volcano Arenal. Your first stop on the way will be the Volcano Poás, situated in the north of San José. On the way ascending to the Volcano you will enjoy the beauty of the landscape of the Central Valley passing by coffee and fern plantations and strawberry farms. The majestic Volcano Poás is the most visited National Park in Costa Rica. After a picturesque hike you will make your way to Doka Estate, a 141 hectare coffee plantation where you will enjoy a tour through the impressive estate and admire the surrounding rolling hills. After a delicious lunch at Doka plantation you continue to La Fortuna. On the way you 77

In the evening dinner is served at your hotel. DAY 4 VOLCANO ARENAL TOUR - HOT SPRINGS After breakfast your guide will take you for a hike in the National Park. During this nice walk you get close to the Volcano and can see a lot of exotic plants. After the hike you venture into the beautiful volcanic region passing rolling hills alive with fruit plantations, ornamental plants, and cattle ranches on our way to the town of La Fortuna. Here you will stop for a traditional Tico style lunch while enjoying the majestic view of the Arenal volcano and the lush greenery surrounding the area before heading off to the Baldi Hot Springs. Baldi is the perfect hot spring choice for families and groups that want a taste of the hot springs in an open fun environment. Although it is the most economical selection, Baldi is not lacking in its variety of pools, waterslides, falls, gardens, and of course the mandatory swim up bars. DAY 5 LA FORTUNA - LA PAZ WATERFALL GARDENS - BUTTERFLY OBSERVATORY - SAN JOSÉ After breakfast you will drive to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, one of the most beautiful destinations in the area. It is a private nature reserve with a beautiful orchid garden and one of the largest butterfly gardens in Central America. Furthermore, a Hummingbird garden, wild cats, reptiles, monkeys and lots of tropical birds are waiting to be discovered by you. You can also take a walk on 78

79 a trail leading to a spectacular waterfall in the middle of the rainforest. Taking pictures is a must! After an exhilarating mountain hike to enjoy the gorgeous scenery you will drive to San José. DAY 6 SAN JOSÉ - MEXICO CITY After breakfast you will enjoy a guided city tour before you will be to the airport to catch your flight to Mexico City. There is a 28 USD departure tax which needs to be paid personally in the airport. When you arrive in Mexico City your guide will be waiting for you with a sign with your name. Transfer to your hotel, dinner and overnight stay. DAY 7 MEXICO CITY Breakfast. Your guide will take you to the Place of the Constitution, popularly known as the Zócalo, located in the historic city center and declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. It is the second-largest public square in the world. Highlights around the Zócalo include the National Palace, where you will admire the mural by Diego Rivera, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor, ruins of the former center of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán. Then drive thru the Paseo de la Reforma Boulevard to Chapultepec Park, to visit the museum of anthropology. Opened in 1964, it is considered the finest of its kind in the world. Here you will admire the famous Aztec calendar stone, models of Tenochtitlán, a fascinating market place diorama, giant stone Olmec heads from the jungles of Tabasco and Veracruz among many other interesting treasures. In the afternoon you will drive to the Canals of Xochimilco, where you will enjoy a short boat trip through the famous canals. Return to your hotel, dinner and overnight stay. DAY 8 TEOTIHUACÁN After breakfast you will drive north to the famous pyramids of Teotihuacán. On your way you will stop at the shrine of Guadalupe, a monumental tribute to Mexico s faith to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the richest and most visited catholic shrine in all the Americas. Afterwards you will continue to encounter the magic and mystery of the old city of Teotihuacán considered the most important city of Mexican table land plateau between AD, 200 and 500, when it was inhabited by more than 200,000 people with a visit to the pyramids of the sun and the moon. Walk down the avenue of dead, past the temple of Quetzalcóatl with its unique stone sculptures of plumed serpents, the temple of the butterflies, and explore pre Hispanic structures and ruins. 80 DAY 9 MEXICO CITY - CUERNAVACA - TAXCO - MEXICO CITY Breakfast. This morning you will be picked up at your hotel and drive to Cuernavaca for a tour of the cathedral and the historical centre, including the palace of Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquerer of Mexico, and the shrine El Calvario. Cuernavaca is the capital of the Mexican state of Morelos and is known as The City of Eternal Spring. Afterwards you will continue to Taxco where you will visit the Church of Santa Prisca, a silver workshop and you will have free time for shopping. After enjoying the beauty of this city your will return to Mexico City. Dinner and overnight stay. DAY 10 MEXICO CITY - MÉRIDA Breakfast. At around noon you will be picked up to catch your flight from Mexico City to Mérida. In Mérida your guide will be waiting for you to transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Dinner and overnight stay. DAY 11 MÉRIDA - UXMAL - MÉRIDA Breakfast. In the morning you will enjoy a guided city tour of Mérida, on which you will visit the Cathedral, Casa de Montejo and the Palace and enjoy the fascinating combination of art, history and culture in the capital city of the Mexican State Yucatán. In the afternoon you will travel to Uxmal to visit this late-classic Maya site. The history of Uxmal is uncertain but most of the buildings date from the 7th to the 10th Centuries AD, when Uxmal dominated the region. The real function of many of these structures is unknown. Unlike most Yucatán sites, Uxmal has no cenotes and water was collected in manmade cisterns. The scarcity of water may explain the number of depictions of the rain god Chaac on the buildings. Highlights include the Governors Palace, actually three buildings linked by Maya arches, built during the 9th and 10th Centuries AD; The Nunnery Quadrangle, so named because the Spanish thought that the 74 small rooms set around a central courtyard resembled the cells of a nunnery; and The Magician s Pyramid, the tallest and most striking structure at Uxmal, begun in the 6th century AD. DAY 12 MÉRIDA - CHICHÉN ITZÁ - CANCÚN After Breakfast you will continue your trip to Chichén Itzá. For many, today s excursion will be the highlight of the tour - recently declared as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, Chichén Itzá is undoubtedly the bestpreserved Maya site on the Yucatán peninsula. 81 in the older, southern part of the site is uncertain, but the northern section was built during a renaissance in the 11th Century AD. In its heyday as a commercial, religious and military centre, which lasted until about the 13th Century, Chichén Itzá supported over 35,000 people. The ruins were built with such knowledge of cosmology and mathematics that astound scholars from around the world. Deadly games were held in the magnificent Ball Court to choose sacrificial victims for the altar-throne that was in the form of a red jaguar encrusted with jade, and their remains displayed in the gruesome Temple of Skulls. This ball court is the largest to be found in Mesoamerica. After lunch you will travel to your hotel in Cancún. Dinner and overnight stay.
