2 A CONNOISSEUR'S MEXICO February 18-23, 2015 Mural by Rivera at National Palace (above) image by Wolfgag Sauber MEXICO S GREAT CAPITAL CITY IS A CRITICAL CENTER FOR CREATIVITY - and has been for centuries, attracting great minds like Henry James, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky. Scattered throughout the city s urban core are oases of beauty, from the colorful murals that adorn more than a dozen public buildings in the historic center to the artistic domestic aura of the homes of Frida Kahlo and Dolores Olmedo. Great architecture abounds, from the soaring pyramids of Teotihuacán to the modernist creations of Luis Barragán to the city s sparkling new museums. Gain special insight into many of Mexico City s cultural treasures during special tours of the city s best museums, gardens, and works of art. Enjoy sumptuous accommodations at the Four Seasons, a splendid five-star hotel famous for its serene interior garden courtyard located on the fashionable tree-lined Reforma Boulevard beside Chapultepec Park. Throughout the tour, great meals are provided at top restaurants, providing a varied sampling of Mexico s wide-ranging cuisine. TO BOOK A TRIP CALL OR VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/HAA/TRAVEL

Be one of the first to see the newly-opened private Jumex museum, designed by the renowned English architect David Chipperfield and home to the remarkable contemporary art collection of Eugenio Lòpez, one of the world s leading art collectors. This evening attend a gourmet welcome dinner at one of Mexico City s best restaurants. Four Seasons Mexico, D.F. (D) Thursday, February 19 Mexico City s Murals View spectacular murals around Mexico City s zócalo including works by José Clemente Orozco in San Ildefonso and Diego Rivera in the Ministry of Public Education. Following a luncheon of Mexican specialties, continue to the National Palace to see Diego Rivera s most famous murals. (B, L) Friday, February 20 Chapultepec Castle & Anthropology Discover the turbulence and grandeur of Mexican history at the lavish Castillo Chapultepec, the location from which Mexico made one of its last stands against the Spaniards. Emperor Maximilian used the castle, parts of which date from 1783, as his residence, and various presidents followed his example until Lázaro Cárdenas decreed that it be turned into the National Museum of History. Continue to the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the world s most spectacular museums, and spend the balance of the morning exploring Mexico s ancient cultures. The afternoon is at leisure for independent explorations of other remarkable museums in Chapultepec Park, such as the Rufino Tamayo Museum or the Modern Art Museum. Enjoy dinner together at a local restaurant. Four Seasons Mexico, D.F. (B, L, D) Mexico City s Zócalo Saturday, February 21 Ancient Ruins of Teotihuacán Explore the astonishing ruins of Teotihuacán, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Mexico. This ancient city was the epicenter of culture and commerce during Mesoamerica s Classic period. Enjoy lunch near the ruins in an unforgettable cave setting. Also stop at Tlatelolco, the site of the 1968 student massacre, and visit the Plaza de Tres Cultures and the remarkable Cultural Center. Tonight dinner is on your own. Four Seasons Mexico, D.F. (B, L) Sunday, February 22 Art in Splendid Settings At the Dolores Olmedo Museum see an excellent collection of works by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in a magnificent hacienda setting. Continue to UNAM campus, and following lunch, see the university s MUAC museum, home to an impressive collection of national and international contemporary art. The museum is housed in a spectacular building by revered Mexican architect Teodoro González de León. Continue to Frida Kahlo s Blue House in Coyoacán, a historic house and art museum dedicated to her life and work. In addition to artwork by Kahlo, Rivera, and other artists, the collection also includes Mexican folk art, pre-hispanic artifacts, memorabilia, personal items, and more exhibited throughout Isamu Noguchi Mural the house, which today remains as it was in the 1950s. Tonight bid adiós to Mexico during a memorable farewell dinner. Four Seasons Mexico, D.F. (B, L, D) Monday, February 23 Adiós Mexico Check out of the hotel, and en route to the airport, visit the Casa Luis Barragán, the home of Mexico s most famous architect.
