3 We, The Japanese Society of Mycoplasmology (JSM) propose to host the 24 th International Organization for Mycoplasmology Congress in 2022 (IOM 2022) in Osaka as follows A) Highlights 1. This congress will provide a special opportunity for clinical doctors in Japan and Asia to participate in IOM. (line 233) 2. About 300 researchers are expected to participate in. (line 170) 3. LOC proposes new attempts such as video conference systems, smartphone applications, and active use of SNS. (line 186, 191, 233) 4. JSM has been contributing to mycoplasma studies for many years, but the last IOM congress in Japan was (line 102) 5. As the price index for tourists shows an exceptionally reasonable and various subsidy systems are provided in Japan, the registration fee can be set reasonable. (line 119, 298, 319, 320) 6. This congress will be held in a historical building located in the center of safe and friendly metropolitan, Osaka. (line 146)

4 Congress can be more multidisciplinary than previous congresses, including biophysics and structural biology. (line 29, 178) 8. LOC proposes to activate scientific exchanges among participants by setting a half-day break during the congress. (line 259) 9. LOC proposes to publish a short meeting report in a high impact journal. (line 238) B) Local organizing committee (LOC) B-1) Local organizing committee (LOC) The congress chair, Prof Makoto Miyata (Osaka City University) and JSM will be responsible for IOM 2022 congress. As Prof Miyata, the possible congress chair, has backgrounds of biophysics and structural biology as well as microbiology, we can expand multidisciplinary aspects to Keynote speakers, local participants and so on. JTB West Japan will cooperate for the meeting operation. LOC members will be selected from the board members and the councilors of JSM. The LOC will be divided into the following teams. Most of the Japanese mycoplasmologists belong to JSM. 2. As many as 310 papers have been published by Japanese mycoplasmologists between 2013 and 2018, as appeared in PubMed by searching through Mycoplasma, Spiroplasma, Phytoplasma and Japan as of 15 Nov JSM conducts a scientific meeting and publishes meeting reports every year. 4. JSM organized conferences of the Asian Organization for Mycoplasmology (AOM) in

6 , 2011 and In the Joint Congress of the 7th ASM and the 45th JSM, held in Tokyo, Japan on May, 2018, as many as 128 scientists participated, including clinical doctors from many countries, China, Korea, India, Taiwan, Israel, The Netherlands, Nigeria, and Japan JSM published "Guiding principles for treating Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia and its English version in The Japanese version has so far sold over 10,000 copies. 6. JSM has been contributing to IOM since its inception in Many Japanese researchers have actively participated in IOM congresses every time. JSM hosted IOM congresses in 1982 and Congress chair: Prof Osamu Kitamoto (Kyorin University) in 1982 Prof Sumio Arai (Kurume University) in JSM presented high quality of science, as represented by the IOM awards history as follows. EMMY KLIENEBERGER-NOBEL Award to Prof Shigetou Namba (Tokyo University) in 2010, DERRICK EDWARD Award to Prof Makoto Miyata (Osaka City University) in 1998, IOM FOUNDERS Award to Prof Osamu Kitamoto (Tokyo University) in 1984, and LOUIS DIENES Award in 1994, 1998, 2000, 2010.

7 7 112 C) Meeting place C-1) Osaka as Host City What is Osaka? Osaka is a city of 2.7 million-population which is convenient, exciting and reasonable. As in other cities in Japan, Osaka is also safe and friendly city. Because more foreign tourists are coming every year, the inconvenience mainly on language is rapidly improving. Nevertheless, the price index for tourists shows an exceptionally reasonable among developed countries as shown by Big Mac Index. Prices are very stable, and flight and hotel fees are globally competitive. Excellent access The nearest Kansai International Airport (KIX) provides direct services from 74 cities in 27 countries, as well as many cities in Japan. The airport, which acts as an Asian hub and serves a large number of flights to the Asia-Pacific region, is conveniently located within 30 minutes by train of downtown Osaka. A rich variety of tourist attraction One of Osaka's greatest advantages is its proximity to the many World Heritage sites which are scattering through the cities of Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Wakayama, some no more than 30 minutes away. Day trips can also be made to Hiroshima, Nagoya and even Tokyo. Enchanting cuisine and delightful shopping Known for its rich food culture, Osaka is a gourmet paradise offering the best from land and sea. Shopping is also a delight in this city which is famous as a City of Merchants. Osaka has the largest underground mall and the longest shopping arcade in Japan, in addition to

8 many department stores, outlet malls and stores selling top fashion brands, and, of course, the famous Nipponbashi consumer electronics district Access to other cities Osaka has the geographical advantage of being located in the center of Japan, making it easily accessible to all parts of the country. Tokyo is only 2.5 hours away, Nagoya is 50 min. and Hakata is 2.5 hours by bullet train. There are air routes to 24 domestic airports from the Osaka International Airport (approx. 30 min. by bus from Osaka station) Only valid travel documents (i.e. passports) are required for entry into Japan

9 C-2) Venue - Osaka City Central Public Hall (OCCPH) - Nationally designated important cultural property The OCCPH, the soul of the Osaka people is listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. This historical building is located in the center of Osaka city and belongs to the city. Since Osaka city is focusing on inviting international academic meetings, they will offer OCCPH with an outstanding price and a grant of USD 8,771 (1 million yen). OCCPH has a historical main hall of 1161 seats, middle hall of 300 seats, and 13 meeting rooms of various sizes. Since music concerts are carried out on a daily basis, there are sufficient audiovisual equipment facilities for holding conferences. No need to replace posters in the congress week, up to 450 posters. Wireless internet is also available. C-3) Accommodation Since OCCPH is located in the center of Osaka, numerous number of hotels in various ranks are accessible within walking distances (refer to the map). Moreover, metropolis Osaka has approximately 50,000 guest rooms situated throughout the city, and there is sure to be something to suit the needs of every visitor. In addition, the guest house of Osaka City University is available including 26 Single rooms (27 m²) and 3 Family rooms (60 m²). Accommodation fees are USD 18 (2,000 yen) and USD 35 (4,000 yen) per night for single and family rooms. Access to OCCPH is 45 min and USD 3.6 (400 yen) for one way.

10 D) Meeting managements D-1) Expected number and member acquisition Considering the number of participants in AOM 2018 and those in recent IOM congresses, we expect that about 300 researchers will participate in IOM 2022 Japan. Even though, LOC will pay efforts to spread opportunity to discuss around mycoplasmology to as many as possible researchers. The LOC team Member acquisition will negotiate with related societies for example, Japan Medical Association, Japan Veterinary Medical Association, The Japanese Society of Veterinary Science, The Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases, Japanese Society for Bacteriology and The Biophysical Society of Japan, to introduce IOM 2022 through website links, introducing special lectures, flyers and so on. LOC may suggest special sessions to program committee, based on the trends of possible participants from neighboring fields. As IOM congresses do not invite speakers other than keynote ones, researchers outside IOM cannot catch the congress outline. Then, in our congress website, we will show the congress details by showing programs of previous congresses hopefully linked to papers publishing after the congress. Also, the titles and authors will be released when the presentations in IOM 2022 are scheduled. Special prices will be set for single day registration to activate the collaboration with the related societies.

11 LOC will use also information sites like m3.com as done in Portsmouth. LOC will negotiate Japan Medical Association to issue official certification for clinical doctors in IOM LOC will try new media including promotion videos listed in YouTube, extensive use of SNS such as facebook and twitters. D-2) Internet and smartphone application presenting abstracts The registrations for abstracts and participation will be done through an internet system. IOM 2022 website combined with a facebook will be launched immediately after IOM 2020, and registration system will be launched by October The website will present the programs of previous IOM congresses as well as scheduled program details, to attract researchers in related fields. JTB West Japan will be responsible for the construction of congress website and its maintenance. Programs and abstract books will be edited by LOC according to the guideline of the program committee. The abstracts will be based on a smartphone application, and hard copy version will be provided only for the number expected to be used. As the applications are linked to advertisements of companies, better amount of sponsorship is expected. D-3) Format of congress Even the number increases over 300, the time scheduling of OCCPH stays quite flexible, because this building has enough capacity. We show a typical schedule Sunday through Friday morning as shown below. Although IRPCM is provisionally set on Sunday, it can be modified flexibly. Setting time is also completely flexible, because Osaka city gives us the highest priority for the use of OCCPH. LOC would like to propose to deliver oral presentations to IOM members through a video conference system like Skype, with free of charge. This may make the merit of IOM membership clearer, activate discussion especially among clinical doctors, who cannot spend much time for traveling, and finally this attempt may increase the number of IOM members. This will not affect the number of participants, because we can have closer interaction on site. LOC also would like to propose to publish a short meeting report in a high impact journal. It can raise the status of IOM as a scientific society and increase members. In accordance with IOM guidelines and practices, the official language for IOM 2022 will be English. All oral presentations and written abstracts will be English. Simultaneous translation will not be provided. The outline of IOM 2022 will be explained

13 during IOM in D-4) Social activities Welcome reception will be held in a brilliant hall like palace salon in OCCPH and Congress dinner will be held after moving to another historical building, Taikoen near Osaka castle with using Canal cruise. Traditional Japanese attractions provided by the Osaka City Tourism Bureau are scheduled. The participation fees of Welcome reception and Congress dinner are included in the registration fee, and additional tickets for Congress dinner can be purchased. We also propose to activate scientific exchanges among participants by setting a half-day break during the congress, including an optional excursion whose destination and contents will be decided by voting at participation registration. The participation can be canceled after the decision. As the venue is located in the center of Osaka city, attendees and accompanying guests can enjoy their stay very much. OCCPH is located at a beautiful side of river that flows through the city. Furthermore, the museum of oriental ceramics, cross the street is also worth visiting. Within 30 minutes by public transportation, there are many attractions

14 popular for foreign tourists such as Osaka Castle, Tsutenkaku tower, Dotonbori, Abeno Harukas (the tallest building in Japan), Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (the one of world's largest aquarium) and Umeda Sky Building (Floating garden observatory). Tower of the Sun containing the world largest tree of life, which is worth to see for biologists is within 40 min by public transportation. Furthermore, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe which are world sightseeing spots can be accessed by public transportation in 45, 60, and 40 minutes, respectively. JTB can also offer various tours for foreign tourists E) Finance E-1) Registration fees Registration fees will be collected through an internet system and credit card. On-site registration will be accepted. Registration fees will not be increased by more than 10% from the amounts in the tables of badget unless approved by the IOM board. All participants will be required to pay registration fees with the exception of invited keynote speakers. Registration Fee Inclusions 1) Participation to scientific sessions 2) Lunches, foods and drinks in breaks and poster sessions each day 3) Welcome reception for all people and Congress dinner for participants 4) Delegate bag and miscellaneous items E-2) Subsidy USD 27,300 (3 million yen) will be supported from JSM. Free loan of USD 27,300 (3 million yen) is also possible. These finances partly can be used to cover the site inspection by the IOM Chair and Chair for the Scientific Program Committee. Support from The Osaka City Tourism Bureau is also expected as USD 9,100 (1 million yen). LOC is planning to apply for Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results C

15 from Japan government. The average allocated amount is USD (6 million yen) and the adoption rate is 52.4%. This grant was actually obtained for IOM 2000 in Fukuoka, Japan. Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Associations also may support USD 4,550 (0.5 million yen). By utilizing advertisements through the smartphone application and lunch-on-seminar which is special for scientific meetings in Japan, income of USD 27,300 (3 million yen) can be expected from pharmaceutical companies as sponsorships. In fact, USD 13,923 (1.53 million yen) was collected for the AOM 2018 congress. LOC can reduce registration fees, and support students and participants from developing countries, based on better financial conditions. The budget will be managed by the congress chair, Dr Takeshi Yamamoto (Kurume University) in charge of treasure, and JTB. Open of bank account for scientific meeting is no problem, because it is not limited for public utility cooperation in Japan. LOC will join to an event insurance (MICE insurance) prepared by JTB with cost of USD 467 (53,250 yen) for participants to cover accidents in the congress.
