1 Feature Article The Industry s Role in the Enrichment of Society Supporting Society and Making History with Technology and Quality Kajima s Progress in Expanding the Tokyo Airport At Kajima, we aim to build structures that contribute to further enriching society while providing the safety, dependability, and comfort that the Company has ensured in the past. These structures should not only be useful for people now, but also valued by the next generation and the many generations that follow. Kajima is engaged in a large number of construction projects in Japan and various regions around the world with this in mind. Kajima s CSR is rooted in its corporate philosophy of contributing to society through the development of the Company s business operations. Meeting the needs of society and our clients with an enterprising spirit, we continuously apply our craftsmanship and new technologies in construction methods to build structures that service people s lives. In this feature article, we will showcase Kajima s craftsmanship in construction by looking back on the Company s history in building transportation infrastructure, specifically at Tokyo Airport informally known as Haneda Airport. We also discuss how Kajima s work at the airport has ultimately contributed to society. KAJIMA CSR REPORT

2 Project Completion is Only the Beginning Structures as Centers for People s Lives and Activities The completion of a project also marks the beginning of a building or structure s existence. When onsite construction offices are dismantled and the people involved have left after a project is done, Kajima does not consider its responsibility for the completed building or structure to be over. The new structure will be home to the lives and activities of countless people whether they are workers in an office tower, residents of a condominium complex, users of roads and bridges, or passengers traveling by bullet train. As such, it is not complete until it accepted by these people as a natural landmark that is integral to the atmosphere of the local area. With this in mind, Kajima aims to continue providing safer and more dependable structures that also bring comfort to people s lifestyles. We want the buildings and structures built by the Company to be valued by their owners and many users, and regarded as indispensable over time. This desire has never changed at Kajima, from its very beginnings to the present day. A Vision for All Eras Kajima will carry this desire into the next 100 years, accepting its role in society with pride. Aiming for continuous progress and development, we will work toward realizing our goal of contributing to society by creating safe, dependable and comfortable buildings and structures for many generations to come. 3 Initiating a New Era with Technology Pursuing Our Mission to Create the Next Century 2009 marks the 170th year since Kajima began as a carpenter s shop in Over the course of its history, the Company has progressed in step with the changing eras and developments of society, and taken up new challenges during its growth. A History of Technological Innovation Kajima was an early pioneer in constructing Western-style buildings in Japan. The Company was later contracted to build railway tracks between Tokyo s Shimbashi district and Yokohama, allowing it to contribute to the development of the country s rail networks, and initiated an era of increased railway construction. The Company also worked on hydroelectric power stations and various public works projects, eventually becoming synonymous with civil engineering in Japan. During the country s reconstruction following World War II, Kajima participated in the comprehensive development of national land, worked in urban planning, and constructed giant dams. Through projects like these, Kajima made significant contributions to laying the foundation for people s livelihood in Japan. During Japan s high growth period in the 1960s, Kajima constructed a large number of production facilities, helping 1945 Historical Timeline History of the Tokyo Airport to lay the cornerstone for the rapid growth of the country s secondary industry. Kajima also constructed taller buildings as urban populations became more concentrated, and succeeded in erecting Japan s first skyscraper, the Kasumigaseki Building, by applying the most advanced earthquake-resistant technology available at the time. The Company went on to make a name for itself as a builder of many prominent skyscrapers, which remain as centers of activity for countless people. Meanwhile, the Company became renowned for its work in nuclear power, as it accumulated technological expertise in the field far ahead of other companies in Japan. The history of Kajima is firmly grounded in advanced technologies. Having continuously pursued cutting-edge methods and techniques, the Company is proud to have earned the recognition and acclaim from society for its steady stream of achievements. 4 Trustworthy Capabilities and Achievements Leading to Future Achievements Kajima s Contribution to Development of the Tokyo Airport and Society The platform for Kajima s activities is, first and foremost, its advanced technological capabilities gained through extensive research and technological development. In 1949, the Company s president at the time Morinosuke Kajima established the Kajima Technical Research Institute, the Japanese construction industry s very first research facility. Since then, his idea that continual research and creation is what brings prosperity to society has driven the Company s approach to contributing to society. The path of Japan s development is directly reflected in Kajima s long history. For instance, the Company s work on a new runway scheduled to open soon at the Tokyo Airport, more commonly referred to as Haneda Airport, represents its contribution to the airport and society s ongoing development. The institute steadfastly works to meet the needs of the Company s clients, as well as society as a whole, with a spirit of ambition and has accumulated both basic and applied research drawn from an array of perspectives. It has brought together specialized engineering in areas such as medical instruments with mechatronic engineering, which is usually used in construction. These comprehensive technological capabilities enable Kajima to confidently take up challenges that arise in the future. Looking forward, Kajima is proud to pursue its mission of creating the next century with a vision for all eras, employing its advanced technologies to construct buildings and structures of excellence. At present, Haneda Airport handles more than 60% of domestic flight passengers in Japan, amounting to over 60 million passengers per year. This is approximately three times the number compared to 30 years ago, and about 10 million more passengers annually than a decade ago. In line with projections of continued growth in passenger numbers in the future, a fourth runway and a new passenger terminal for international flights are scheduled to open in October Kajima has been involved in a large number of construction projects at Haneda Airport spanning many years, from the time the facility was used by occupied forces in the post-war period to its expansion up to the present day. Kajima also participated in building transport access to Haneda when it was undergoing rapid development in time for the Tokyo Olympic Games in Working on projects such as these, the Company was able to grow together with society in developing the Japanese economy. Now, as we look back on the history of the transport infrastructure connecting to Haneda Airport including the roads, railways and the Tokyo Monorail that are still used every day we can also trace the development of Kajima s workmanship over the period. 5 From the Past to the Present Reflecting Japan s economic development, airplanes have become a common means for many people in the country to travel. In line with the growing demand for air travel, expansion of the Tokyo Airport site began from 1984 with the commencement of a coastal development project designed to improve the airport s functionality and accessibility. New Technologies Take Flight Kajima has completed a wide variety of construction projects in the Haneda area, introducing the latest technologies and methods as well as machinery and equipment to deliver the excellence required for each particular project. In this way, Haneda has served as a runway for many new technologies and methods to take flight. bridge girders in the middle of the bridge columns employing the principle of a balancing toy. Both the tunnel and bridge continue to provide transportation access to Haneda to this day. One example is the submerged tunnel method, which was applied to construct the tunnel under Tokyo Bay connecting the airport with the Capital Expressway and Tokyo Monorail. In this method, the outer shell of the tunnel was constructed beforehand, then transported to the site by ship and submerged underwater, where it was finally assembled. The submerged tunnel method is now commonly used for tunnels built in shallow water and rivers, but it was first developed for the Tokyo Airport. Kajima also introduced the DYWIDAG method from Germany to construct the bridge to the airport. The method outwardly projects the Every step of the Tokyo Airport s development reflects Kajima s technological innovations and advancements in construction. With this recognition, Kajima s engineers at the construction sites are motivated by a sense of responsibility to pass on their skills and techniques to reach future generations. Having carried out numerous projects to construct facilities at the Tokyo Airport and the transport infrastructure that connects to it for many years, Kajima maintains a permanent construction office in the Haneda area, where its employees continue to engage in the airport s ongoing history. 6 Of utmost importance for Kajima is that each employee involved in construction at varying times should, as engineers of the Company, take pride in their immediate work to build essential spaces that offer convenience to users. Moreover, for the Haneda area s continuing development a project for the entire country Kajima expects its engineers to pass on their pride and skills so that they may lead to dependable buildings and structures for generation after generation. By always employing the most advanced technologies and highest craftsmanship, Kajima aims to respond to society s current needs while empowering the engineers that will lead us into the future. association formed by construction companies and organizations in the Haneda area, to ensure that transportation continues uninterrupted for people visiting the area and local residents. As a corporate citizen of Haneda, Kajima regards relations of mutual trust, forged through cooperation with relevant government agencies and the local community, as an essential factor for enabling it to carry out construction projects. With an awareness that the Company must employ advanced technologies and superior craftsmanship in local development, Kajima will move forward to create safe, dependable, and comfortable spaces on the basis of trust, given to us by all those who have a stake in our work. Kajima has been appointed as the organizer of an airport Kajima moves the Red Gate of Haneda Before the Second World War, the Anamori-Inari Shrine was located on the grounds of the airport site. After the war, however, occupying forces ordered it to be transferred off-site, which caused considerable damage to the shrine s many arched gates. Nevertheless, one of the gates continued to remain for a long time, as local residents believed that dismantling it would incur divine wrath. The gate posed a problem for the airport, as it stood in the way of the planned Runway B, so eventually it was decided that the gate would be moved. At the time, most companies were hesitant to take on this work, but Kajima a company long established in the community and experienced in numerous projects in the area came forward and took charge. Kajima moved the gate safely, and set it to face the east. This position would prove fortuitous, as the first sunrise of the New Year, which is a moment of special significance to the Japanese, casts a celestial glow within the outline of the gate, witnessed by a large number of people who had come there to pray. 7 From the Present to the Future Building an Even More Abundant Society In recent work at the Tokyo Airport, a Kajima joint venture has been designing and constructing Runway D, which will be the airport s fourth runway. It is also constructing the new aircraft apron and passenger terminal for international flights. Upon completion, flight capacity will expand from about 300,000 arrivals and departures annually to about 410,000, raising expectations for the airport to become an even bigger gateway to the skies. Making a new center for international flights To prepare the Tokyo Airport for handling international flights, a site for an aircraft apron, an international passenger terminal and cargo terminal are being constructed. To build the aircraft apron, a special purpose company comprised of six companies including Kajima has been set up through a private finance initiative (PFI), the first of its kind to be introduced in Japan. Or Haneda Airport Apron PFI Co., Ltd., is not only designing and constructing the aircraft apron, but will also carry out comprehensive maintenance management after construction completion for 25 and a half years. For the international passenger terminal, a five-story building with 159,300 square meters of total floor space, a Kajima joint venture is responsible for construction of two of the four building zones, the A and B zones. 8 Pushing Forward into New Fields for a Brighter Future In response to various changes in society, Kajima has drawn from applied technologies to create spaces that are safe and comfortable, thereby providing a high level of convenience to society. However, issues of the new era, particularly with global warming and destabilization of the ecosystem, are growing in magnitude and demand accelerated efforts to realize a low-carbon society in harmony with nature. This requires greater efforts to devise an array of solutions that address green spaces, biodiversity, and the environment, while considering how to create symbiosis in our regions. As environmental problems cannot be solved with a passive mindset, Kajima is actively working toward creating rich and comfortable environments while building a sustainable society through positive application of new technologies. Looking forward, we are committed to take on new challenges to set the next stage for further improving safety, dependability, and comfort for future generations. The structures are massive the largest section weighs as much as 1,600 tons so affixing them raised the issue of how to determine the exact locations and the appropriate depth of the pillars. To solve this problem, all of the companies involved combined their technologies and techniques; Kajima s measuring system and other technologies in the mechatronics field proved highly useful. Through these advanced technologies, Kajima and its partners are working to build a runway that can last 100 years.
