10 2.4. Description The first stage (stage 0) comprises the first climbs on wonderful small roads with little traffic in Chablais. It starts with a first 40km smooth warm up before we can test if the past month training was enough. Even though it can not compare with what the huge long climbs like Passo Stelvio. From Fessy we start the very first climb of the tour up to Col de Cou (1116m) from it s toughest side; which probably manifests already in the first 100m in the village of Fessy itself. Trough the woods we bike on a small road with short glimpse from time to time to see the lake and the Jura on the other side and a last view to Geneva; time to say good bye. After a short decent we climb up to Col de Arces (1164m). In a longer descent we change the valley side by crossing a little stream Le Brevon just to have an intermediate short climb on the other side to La Vernaz all around the massive Outannaz with it's 2 highest peaks 'Grande Pointe des Journées' (1720m) and 'Mont Billiat' (1894m). Once arrive at Les Gorges Du Pont du Diable and continue on the west shore of lake La Dranse de Morzine. From it s south end in La Baume turn left and continue on a tiny nice road with your 3 rd climb of 8km up to Col du Corbier (1235m). It s not the biggest climb, but it should not be underestimated. In a few nice and open hairpin turns we decent to La Solitude from where we ll follow the valley always slightly up to La Chapelle d'abondance. Here is the start of the 4 th climb, our last mountain of the day, Pas de Morgins (1369m). On the top we are back in Switzerland and on a long roll down and recover from all the previous climb. Arriving on the bottom in Monthey, we have to cross the Rhone valley and cover our last flat kilometers to Aigle where we rest and recover for a long stage 1 with not much climbs but quite some kilometers. Note: If the weather should be bad, it s an alternative to pass along the shore of Lac Leman by Thones-les-Bains and Evian and cut off the first climbs. That doesn t make it really shorter but keep us lower and therefor warmer. Page 10

12 3.4. Description The 1 st stage is characterized by a first climb to Col des Mosses followed and Saanenmöser Sattel. But the overall tendency of the stage is going down, down, down to arrive at Thunersee and Brienzersee which offers the possibility to have a long cruise together in the group. Thus overall we ll not have as much elevation as the day before or the day after. The start in the day will be a little bit tough as it goes up immediately on a wide road. Let s hope for not too much traffic. We start the 18km ascent in Aigle, following the Grand Eau. After 6km it s becoming flatter and after another 2km we arrive in Le Sepey after which the traffic should become less. After another 4km we reach the high valley of Ormont-Dessous. Arriving at the ski resort marks the top and we can relax the legs a bit on the the way down to until Chateau-d Enhaut. There we traverse in a slight uphill to Gstaad where we ll attack the 2 nd but smaller climb to Saanenmöser Sattel. From there on we are almost done. Well almost as we have done more or less all the climbs for today. But from now on it would be a good idea to ride in a group all the way down to Meiringen to save resources and benefit from drafting. All the ride until Meiringen is a long flat ride with scenic views on and round Thun, the Thunersee and Brienzersee. Page 12

14 4.4. Description Day 3, now we should be warmed up as the first real mountains are waiting for us and a long stage in addition. But as soon as we are done with the last climb it s almost going down all the time. From Meiringen we start a shorter climb, the Aareschlucht with only 124m of elevation. If you want you can count it to the following one up to Col du Grimsel which is one of the 3 longest climbs of this TGV up to (2165m). The climb is long but overall not to steep with even 5 short legs to rest. The diverse track from the north side which we are taking nicely shows the character of this climb. Passing by small villages the road leads comfortably through wood and meadows all along the river Aare. But as higher we get the forest thins out and soon only rocks and rubble is left. Delusive are the dams in the upper part, behind you always expect the summit. But eventually after a dozen of more turns we ll reach the long desired sign of the summit. This pass has everything a pass needs: A scary steep, large turns, human grades, a diversified landscape and a lot of altitude difference. Thus this one should not be missed out! Once on top we descent the road cut into the steep and arrive aver numerous switchbacks nicely stacked upon each other down to Gletsch the base to our next goal: Col de la Furka (2429m). The 11km climb to Col de la Furka can be cut in 3 legs: A quite long straight, a couple of switchbacks and a lost longer slightly bend straight leading to the border between canton Valais and canton Uri. On the way up have a look North on the rests of the huge Rhône glacier with summits above 3600m. The descent to the famous Swiss ski resort in Andermatt gives us time to recover for the last col: Col de Surpalix/Oberalppass (2044m). It starts right in Andermatt with 8 switchbacks (and short tunnel) always close by the famous railway which we goes along the road from the ski station Nätschen all the way to the top with Oberalpsee (lake) and. a surprising light house which you would more expect somewhere at the sea. When descending, don t be afraid of the road cut into the mountain just the other side, it s not the way we go :) We ll follow the road all the way down to Chur, the capital of the Swiss s biggest canton Grisons just interrupted by a short climb around ~20km before Chur to avoid the main road and have nicer views on one of the to rivers Rein Anteriur which will meet just before Chur with Hinterrhein to continue as Rhein all they way to Lake Constance and the North Sea. Question: Do you know the distance from the source of Rhein to the sea? Even more than our TGV tour! ~1230km Page 14

Description After a though last stage with this 3 famous climbs, stage 4 is supposed to be a shorter stage to relax and prepare for the kings stage on day 5. So be warned: Don t make an all out workout today. From Chur we start directly up to Lenzerheide/Valbella (1547m) known to be a winter holiday paradise. Maybe less known than the following Albulapass (2312m) which should not be underestimated. It already starts quite tough with an average of 8-9% over the first 6km until Malix. From there one we can relax and recover for the next 2.5km kilometer until the grade is going up again. As the road is quite wide and well maintained for all the tourists we might find quite some traffic her. From the top on the traffic is getting less, but the road is not in a good shape. Take care, break, ride safe! Arriving in Tiefenkastel marks the end of the descent and we keep left slowly going up the valley into direction Davos. But just short after we keep right (the less steep road ;) ) just to turn into Albula valley where we pass Filisur at it s beginning. From there we start our climb up to Albulapass (2312m). This one might not be as famous as Col du Galibier or Passo Stelvio but it is a real insider tip Where you have for example a highlight Rhätischen Bahn as seen on the right. As a draw back it welcomes you with grades around 8%-10%. But have a look to the railway tracks! By 5 tunnels and 9 viaducts the tracks going up 422m on only 12.5km length. We on the road will have to do only 6km ;) In an average it takes bikers around 1h45 to go up. If you have time, check a map to see the crazy arrangement of the railway track. It looks the engineer was drunk and making circles around his glass of beer. The descent towards La Punt Chameusch is goes trough a long valley in the upper part, looking abandoned. Passing by Albulasee (lake) and it mostly straight in the upper part before it finishes with a couple of steep switchbacks. Page 16
17 From La Punt Chameusch we continue right towards Livigno most popular for skiing. The road is rather flat for most of the time but nevertheless going up slightly finishing on Berninapass (2330m). The road has rather some traffic, at least until Pontresina. After passing the village it s worth to have a look to the right from time to time to enojoy the view to Morteratsch glacier. After a view more kilometer we arrive on top of Passo del Bernina/Berninapass (2330m) and can relax for a moment. And we ll need to relax as we have a last climb to Forcola di Livigno, the last climb separating us from Livigino and our hotel. Don t shot me for that climb it wasn t my idea in the first place but Stephano s ;) In case you suffer, ask him for a beer in the hotel. Finally in Livigno, don t drink to much tonight and go to sleep early. Tomorrow will be the king stage with the highest col of all the tour: Passo di Stelvio. Page 17

Description Kings stage! Passo dello Stelvio, 2758m. Due to the re-planning this time we ll have the 48 switchbacks, 24.6km and 1844m of elevation difference only as a descent. But don t go to fast, enjoy the impressive views! But fore we can attack Stelvio we need to get to i s bottom: Bormio. To get there we have 2 smaller climbs ahead of us: Passo d Eira and Passo di Foscagno. Both of them are neither long nor steep. But when you arrive on top of Passo d Eira, have a lost look back to Livigno. After a short descent we ll climb up short as well to Passo di Foscagno before we descent with less grade towards Bormio. Don t push to much on that road, you might need the energy later. From Bormio we start the climb to Passo dello Stelvio. The ascent from this side is a bit shorter and covers less elevation. But don t let yourself be tricked: It s a though long climb! To distract yourself have a look at the nice waterfalls and take your time, go your pace, climb, suffer.. enjoy! Most likely the top is not the best place to stay and enjoy. Either the weather is bad in which case you want/should descent immediately to Bormio. Or the weather is great, than looks and sounds more like Europe s highest fairground. From the top the way to Bolzano is going only one direction: DOWN! Unfortunately I have not been able to find the optimal balance between fast, convenient, pleasant and quite way to Bolzano. We ll have to decide a little bit case by case how to continue. The gps track nevertheless should not be the worst. Just don t let yourself be fooled by following the bicycle path, not all of it is paved. After this tremendous physical effort it s time to recover. Tomorrow we ll entering the Dolomites and some surprises. Page 19

Description This day is a kind transfer into the heart of the Dolomites. The one and only climb in this stage is Passo Gardena. Beside the stunning views towards the end of the stage approaching Passo Gardena, the first kilometers are supposed to be fun. We are leaving Bolzano on a bicycle path which has been constructed on the old railway tracks. Thus it can be considered a rather flat, quite and pleasant ride. But from Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck there is no other way: We have to start our climb to Passo Gardena. From the top we descent directly to Corvara and the hotel. Page 21

Description When stage 4 was the king stage, today is queens stage. More scenic it will not become! We ll not follow the famous Sella Ronde in order to avoid climbing up the same way we came from. Instead the idea is to pass over less well known passes. Nevertheless, on this stage we have a lot of alternatives to lengthen or shorten it in case of bad weather or lack of endurance/recovery. In order to get to our 2 nd climb we go up via Passo di Campologno. The more famous way would be via Passo Gardena (2121m) and Passo del Sella (2244m). From Passo Pordoi (2239m) where we ll have probably the most tourists beside Stelvio and Venice we have 800m of elevation to stretch our legs before attacking Passo di Fedaia. While the ascent is scenic, the descent. is the time you can attempt to beat your speed record! But be careful! Venice is only 1 day out! The way to hour hotel around Belluno I have chosen a less known road and except a shorter climb of ~350m should give us enough time to already think about this epic landscape. It will lead us on a small road along surrounded by mountains still over 2000m high and along Lago del Mis into the wide valley and to Belluno. Page 23

Description Last stage, can you smell the sea already? No? Me neither. But soon you ll have a great view (if the weather allows) down in the Po flat. But before we have to climb up (ok we don t need to, but it s worth it) a last mountain: Monte Grappa (1745m) with it s World War I memorial. I can t deny it, it s a 30km climb but not to steep. But on the other side the road descending to Bassano del Grappa is worth it. In endless hairpin turns it s winding down. First without any vegetation around, changing into the Mediterranean pine trees. If (what I hope) the there is sun and heat, with every turn you ll more and more smell these pines! But in case you don t want to embrace this last giant, you can go with zero meters of elevation just along the mountain and into the Po plane. That last part towards Venice is characterized by a lot of small villages, but without any elevation :) Page 25
26 As far as I know it is not easy to arrive with the race bike to Piazza San Marco. Although I found a way to get there without getting wet or taking a boat. Thus the track of this day is actually longer than we will likely ride. Page 26
