1 14-18 September 2016 Imperial Hotel INTRODUCTION The 2016 Annual Meeting of the International Academy of Family Lawyers will take place at the wonderful Imperial Hotel in fascinating New Delhi. This will be for many of you a rare opportunity to visit and explore one of the most exciting, interesting and varied countries in the world and for others a chance to revisit a muchloved place you have already experienced, perhaps on many previous occasions. India was known as the jewel in the crown of the British Empire and with good reason. It is one of the world s oldest civilisations and Indian culture is shaped by several thousand years of varied and diverse history. Geographically it has been at the heart of Asia and a vital link between East and West from the beginning. Its more recent history has changed attitudes worldwide. It is in so many respects one of the most influential, original and fascinating countries in the world and has been a magnet for visitors for centuries. Delhi is the traditional and present day capital of India. It is the third largest city in the world with a population of over 13 million. Delhi is also one of the oldest continually inhabited cities of India. It has a rich history and has been ruled by some of the most powerful emperors in Indian history. New Delhi was built by the British between 1911 and 1931 to be the showcase of the British Empire. With its government buildings, many of which were designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens, and spacious houses provided for ministers and civil servants, it is elegant, grand and full of architectural interest. The Art Deco Imperial Hotel is situated near Connaught Place, a circular shopping plaza designed to imitate the Regency
2 English cities of Bath and Cheltenham. Dotted around New Delhi and Old Delhi are many historical and religious monuments left by the dynasties which ruled Delhi, such as the vast Red Fort; the highest brick minaret in the world, the Qutub Minar (1193); the first great example of a Mughal Garden Tomb, Humayan s Tomb (1565) and many temples and religious complexes. In the maze of streets and alleyways and amid the frenetic activity of the streets of Old Delhi you can experience the real India. This is an exhilarating assault on the senses and not to be missed. Here the narrow streets are lined with shops with colourful goods spilling out onto the pavements; the sight of so many people hard at work, pulling carts piled high with fruit and selling their wares on every inch of spare ground is reminiscent of a Breughel painting except perhaps for the bicycles and tuk-tuks and their accompanying horns. The extreme contrast between this and New Delhi heightens the effect on the senses. The Imperial Hotel is a really lovely hotel, with wonderful staff, beautiful gardens with a big pool, and large, airy rooms. It is a historic (1930s) building and is extremely well furnished with a lot of interesting prints and paintings. There is no overflow hotel as this one is quite reasonably priced for what it is and it is great if we can all be together if possible. There are plenty of rooms but do book soon as many of them have already been reserved. (Visitors will need to remove their shoes and socks to enter the temple and should not wear shorts or
5 shoulderless tops). This temple also houses kitchens where volunteers feed up to 100,000 people (of all faiths) daily in a vast hall. (Please note that this tour will also be repeated as one of the optional trips on Saturday afternoon).
