Join Professor Stan Katz and your fellow Princetonians, October 24 - November 3, 2014, in an investigation of Vietnamese society today. Begin in charming Hanoi, whose French architectural details meld seamlessly with the serene lines of its pagodas and temples. Three nights in Hanoi allow you to take in the old through a cyclo (bicycle rickshaw) tour of the city s colorful Old Quarter and get up to date in briefings with government officials, foundation representatives and other in-country contacts. Depart Hanoi for central Vietnam and the old capital of Hué, which was once the region s cultural, religious, and educational center. From here, continue south to Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site with an eclectic mix of merchant architecture showcasing old houses in French, Chinese and Japanese style all of which miraculously escaped the ravages of war. End the program in bustling Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), a mix of old and new that makes the perfect bookend for the program. Rowley S95 Executive Manager, Princeton Journeys Stanley Katz, Princeton Study Leader Formerly Class of 1921 Bicentennial Professor of the History of American Law and Liberty at Princeton University, Katz currently holds the title of Lecturer with the rank of Professor in Public and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School and is the director of the University s Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies. A specialist on American legal and constitutional history, and on philanthropy and non-profit institutions, his recent research focuses upon the relationship of civil society and constitutionalism to democracy, and upon the relationship of the United States to the international human rights regime. His interest in and involvement with Vietnam began in the 1980s when he became president of the American Council of Learned Societies, which began scholarly post-war exchanges between the U.S. and Vietnam at the same time as he developed ACLS s new focus on the study of constitutionalism, thus his recent scholarly interests. On this Journey, Professor Katz will discuss the landscape of civil society and enterprise in Vietnam over the course of the past three decades. His comments will be enhanced by specially-arranged meetings with local field staff of NGOs and other players in the modern economy.

Friday. October 24. Depart USA Depart the U.S. bound for Hanoi, Vietnam. Day 2. Saturday. October 25. Arrive Hanoi, Vietnam. Arrive in Hanoi. You will be transferred to the Metropole Hotel, located just a few steps from the Opera House in the city s French Quarter. Metropole Hotel Day 3. Sunday. October 26. Hanoi. The day begins with an orientation meeting before heading out to explore wonderful Hanoi. This charming city is dotted with pleasant lakes, shaded boulevards, and verdant public parks. The city center is an architectural museum piece, with its blocks of ochre buildings retaining the air of a provincial French town of the 1930s. The group will visit Ho Chi Minh s Mausoleum, a massive Stalinist edifice displaying the embalmed body of Uncle Ho, the revered Marxist revolutionary and leader of Vietnam in the mid-20th century and will tour the Confucian Temple of Literature, site of the first university in Vietnam. Also included is a visit to the One-Pillar Pagoda before lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon is highlighted by a curator-led tour of the Ethnology Museum. This is both a research center and a public museum exhibiting the ethnic groups of Vietnam. Metropole Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

4 Day 4. Monday. October 27. Hanoi. This morning, a bicycle rickshaw excursion winds its way through Hanoi s colorful Old Quarter and its narrow streets, past charming shops and unique architecture. With over 1,000 years of history packed into a maze, one can find everything from local food to antiques. During the 13th century Hanoi s 36 guilds of craftsmen and artisans established themselves in the Old Quarter. Subsequently each street has been named after a specific product, which was produced and sold here. Even to this day, this area retains the essence of life from centuries past. The afternoon will be spent in meetings with Princeton contacts in a variety of fields. Metropole Hotel: (Breakfast, Lunch) Day 5. Tuesday. October 28. Hué. A short morning flight is bound for Hué, the last imperial capital of Vietnam. Upon arrival the group will transfer to La Résidence Hotel & Spa, an enchanting boutique hotel on the banks of the fabled Perfume River overlooking the former Imperial Citadel which was once home to Emperors and is now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch will be served at the hotel followed by a dragon boat ride down the Perfume River to Thien Mien Pagoda and a stroll through the Forbidden Purple City. La Résidence Hotel & Spa (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 6. Wednesday. October 29. Hué. Hué has traditionally been one of Vietnam s cultural, religious and educational centers. This 19th-century capital of regal pavilions has preserved its air of gracious reserve and faded glamour and is home to Vietnam s famous Royal Tombs, which mark the first stop on this morning s tour. The tombs were built to provide the seven Nguyen Emperors noble burials and comfortable afterlives. There will also be time today to stroll through Dong Ba Market, one of the most colorful in Asia. This evening the group will attend a private dinner in the home of the Pham Ba Vinh. Hear stories of his royal lineage and his family history through the turbulent 20th century. La Résidence Hotel & Spa (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 7. Thursday. October 30. Hoi An. A spectacular morning drive along the coastline and over the Hai Van Pass ends in the town of Hoi An, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in Foreigners have been coming to Hoi An since the 15th century Dutch, Portuguese, British, French, Japanese, and Chinese to purchase silk, fabrics, tea, pepper, and Chinese medicine. Lunch will be in Danang. En route to Hoi An, drive past abandoned Quonset huts and past the huge, former American airfield. Hoi An is one of the rare places in Vietnam where you can find genuine Vietnamese architecture, which miraculously escaped the war. The city is small and compact and the historic quarter is home to 20,000 people. After checking in to the hotel, the remainder of the day is at leisure. The hotel, Life Heritage Resort, is located along the scenic Thu Bon River, just a short stroll from the colorful and bustling ancient town. Life Heritage Resort (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 8. Friday. October 31. Hoi An. After breakfast, enjoy a guided morning walking tour through this enchanting port town where the narrow lanes are lined with shops and art galleries. It is still possible to wander here and imagine oneself in another age. See the Japanese Covered Bridge, the local produce market, Tang Ky House, and the Fukhien Association. The town is a haven for local artists and there are many galleries. Hoi An is also well known for its tailors, making custom fitted clothing for a fraction of what it costs in the West. The morning concludes with a private boat trip on the Thu Bon River and a chance to catch a glimpse of the surrounding fishing villages. This afternoon is at leisure to relax, dine, shop, bike, and explore on your own. Life Heritage Resort (Breakfast) Day 9. Saturday. November 1. Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). The morning group flight is bound for Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City. The city tour begins with a visit to the Reunification Hall and the site of the former U.S. Embassy. Then see the War Remnant Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the General Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel. After check-in at the Caravelle Hotel and lunch, a late afternoon walk winds through the frenzied merchants of Cholon Market, and ends with a visit to Thien Hau Pagoda, one of the most celebrated temples in the country. Return to the hotel before cocktails are served on the rooftop bar of the famous Rex Hotel, where journalists would congregate during the Vietnam War for official government briefings that were known as the five o clock follies. Finally, enjoy dinner tonight at one of Saigon s favorite restaurants.

5 Caravelle Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 10. Sunday. November 2. Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). After breakfast, travel to the infamous Viet Cong stronghold at Cu Chi. The hundreds of miles of underground tunnels here confounded first the French then later American troops during the Vietnam War. This excursion provides amazing insight into how the Vietnamese held their own in the American War (as it is known in Vietnam). Return to Saigon for a final afternoon to relax, shop, have lunch, and explore on your own. Reconvene this evening for a wonderful farewell dinner. Caravelle Hotel (Breakfast, Dinner) Day 11. Monday. November 3. Departure. Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the U.S. Most flights will arrive back home on the same day. Or, continue on a trip to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia. (Breakfast) * Cultural visits and meetings throughout with local Princetonians will be announced in the final itinerary once confirmed. OPTIONAL EXTENSION: Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia Day 11. Monday. November 3. Phnom Penh. A morning flight takes our group to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Transfer to the Raffles Hotel. Afternoon sightseeing includes a stroll through the Russian Market and a visit to the Royal Palace with the Silver Pagoda and the Victory Monument. Raffles Hotel (Breakfast, Dinner) Day 12. Tuesday. November 4. Phnom Penh A dark time of Cambodia s history is displayed at the Tuol Sleg Museum. Located in a former high school, it is the location of the notorious Security Prison of the Khmer Rouge. The visit to Tuol Sleng is followed by a trip to the famous site of the Killing Fields where a Buddhist stupa commemorates those who perished here. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Raffles Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch) Day 13. Wednesday. November 5. Siem Reap Early morning departure for Siem Reap, home to one of Indochina s most magnificent sites, the temples of Angkor. Ornamented by the finest artisans of its time, once redolent with incense and prayer, Angkor was lost beneath the sands of time only to be re-discovered at the opening of the last century. Angkor was built between the 9th and 13th centuries when Khmer civilization was at the height of its extraordinary creativity. After check-in and lunch at the Grand Hotel D Angkor, the exploration of this famous site begins with a late afternoon visit to Angkor Wat, the temple complex that covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Siem Reap This morning s highlight will be a trip to Beng Mealea, an amazing and atmospheric off-the-beaten-path 900-year old temple. Lunch will be served in a small inn known as the Secrets of Elephants before stopping en route back to Siem Reap at Banteay Srei, considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art. Siem Reap The day begins with a visit to the Angkor National Museum followed by an extensive tour of Angkor including the sites of Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple, the Elephants Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King and Ta Prohm. Cancellation Policy and Refund: The tour deposit of $1,000 is non-refundable. The final invoice will be sent three months prior to departure and is due upon receipt. Cancellations shall not be effective until they are received in writing and confirmed by Princeton Journeys. The following cancellations fees will apply: If a written refund is received 89 to 60 days prior to departure 50% of the trip price will be refunded. If a written refund is received 59 to 45 days prior to departure 25% of the trip price will be refunded. If a written refund is received less than 45 days prior to departure no refunds will be issued. No refunds shall be issued after the tour has commenced, or for leaving the tour early. No refunds shall be issued for missed meals, sightseeing tours or any unused services.
