BAF offers a spectacular display of arts and cultural activities concentrated in Denpasar Art Centre, Ardha Chandra. Furthermore, the Seminar participants are invited to join a Technical Visit to Tenganan Village on 12 June 2011 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tenganan Village is one of the oldest Balinese traditional villages located in Karangasem Regency, East Bali. The unique life pattern of its community provides a striking example of Bali Aga Village culture (Hindu Prehistoric), distinct from that of other lowland countryside locations in Bali. XII. ORGANISED TOURS 19. SITE VISIT: TENGANAN VILLAGE Learning from the Local 12 June 2011 BACKGROUND The theme of the Seminar is Responsible Tourism and its Socio-Economic Impact on Local Communities. Responsible tourism involves the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism in tourism development. The Seminar will feature discussions on topics related to the implementation of GCET, such as general ethical principles, tourism ethics and policy formulation, tourism ethics in education and professional tourism organizations, and best practices at the local community level. The approach taken to these discussion topics will initially be a top-down approach. One of the best practices at the community level which will be presented during the Seminar is that of the traditional village of Tenganan in Bali. This will be an excellent opportunity to visit the village and witness its everyday reality. A key tourism principle is uniqueness or the differences in culture and nature at the local level. The relationship between culture and nature, particularly in terms of values, may be seen in Tenganan as the way of life of the villagers. By observing their local community practices and traditions, it is evident that many elements of Global Code of Ethics of Tourism, particularly those related to responsible tourism, have been practiced for centuries in that village. This will add the dimension of a bottom up approach to the workshop, inviting discussion on how local values could contribute to the formulation of responsible tourism at the global level. This approach could be discussed at the meeting of the committee, by looking at how to learn from the local. OBJECTIVES OF THE SITE VISIT a. To see the real condition of the village, b. To get direct information from the chief of the village, c. To know the values adopted in the daily life of villagers, d. To identify the local values that could contribute to universal values,

5 5 SEMBALI/11/INF.NOTE ACTIVITIES a. Observing the village b. Meeting the people c. Meeting with the chief of the village Q & A. 6 SEMBALI/11/INF.NOTE 6 I. BALI ABOUT ADDENDUM OPTIONAL TOURS AND EXCURSIONS One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Bali was awarded the title of the world s best island by International Travel Magazine for several years. Life in Bali is always related to "Tri Hita Karana", or a tripartite concept that includes the spiritual relationship between man, God, and the environment. The rapid growth of tourism development has had a significant impact on Balinese traditions and lifestyle. Interestingly, Balinese culture is still as it always has been, growing along with globalization. It is Balinese civilization that sets the island apart from other destinations. Bali is a truly beautiful tropical island paradise where the passage of life is measured through elaborate rituals performed by artistic and hospitable local people. The Balinese maintain a rich heritage of unique art and a dynamic culture amidst breathtaking panoramas of cultivated rice terraces, pristine beaches, and thousands of temples, augmented by an unrivalled range of modern leisure activities. With sunshine throughout the year, Bali has a tropical monsoon climate, with pleasant temperatures during the day ranging between 20 and 33 degrees Celsius or 68 and 93 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season lasts from October to March while June to September is dry with low humidity. It can be fairly cold in the evening, making this the best time for outdoor activities. There is a unique quality to the Bali s climate. Even when it rains in parts of the island, a sunny day can be enjoyed on the "Bukit" (the hill south of the town of Jimbaran). On the other hand, you may expect cloudy skies and drizzle throughout the year in Ubud and the mountainous areas. FULL DAY TOURS 1). THE BALINESE WAY OF LIFE This morning tour will take you to your first destination: visiting the home of the gold and silver smiths at Celuk Village. Continue on to Kehen Temple and visit a stunning village compound called Penglipuran. Here you will have a chance to learn more about traditional architectural styles. Later visit Kintamani Village where you will see the active volcano of Mt. Batur from a distance while enjoying an Indonesia buffet lunch (optional). On your return to the hotel, you can stop at the Painting Gallery in the Ubud area. USD net/ person USD net/ person USD net/ person USD net/ person 2). HIGHLIGHTS OF EAST BALI While visiting the modest little town, there are numerous reminders in the surrounding countryside of the former grandeur of the Karangasem Dynasty. Your first stop will be Goa Lawah - The Bat Cave, to experience being surrounded by thousands of bats in a temple compound, before continuing on to The Water Palace of Tirta Gangga, built in the 1948 by the last Raja of Karangasem, and finally reaching the main Royal Family s home. The last part of the visit will be to the village of Tenganan, where you will witness a distinctly archaic way of life. The term Bali Aga is loosely applied to those original communities that resisted the post-majapahit Kings and their Hindu-Javanese court culture and were able to maintain the ownership of their land and the authority of their local laws.
