Nestled on a hill overlooking the Eel River Valley, Bear River Casino opened its doors on August 10, 2005 to a throng that was measured not in hundreds but several thousand. The scheduled opening at 6:00pm had to be moved forward one hour just to accommodate the masses of humanity that were eager for entrance into this new endeavor of the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria. By 7:15 the California Highway Patrol had to close the exit off Highway 101 as the number of cars was more than could possibly fit on the hilltop. There were so many cars parked in the parking lot, along the roads and entrances that the untrained eye would have thought they were at a major football game in a big metropolitan area. It was a monumental success said Art Collins, Marketing Manager for the 31,500 square foot facility. The casino fits a niche in Humboldt County that was not being served by the other area casinos. Located in the Southern section of the county, it is an easy destination for those in a 20 mile radius. Bear River Casino has 320 of the hottest and newest slot machines, ten table games and a three table Poker Den. The Thirsty Bear Sports Bar and Grill has been an immediate hit. Serving up the finest in adult beverages at bar brand prices has won over many customers. A delicious menu is also available in the Thirsty Bear. Live entertainment is available on Friday and Saturday nights in the bar. The Rivers Edge Restaurant features a lunch and dinner buffet. The evening buffet is famous as the only prime rib buffet for many, many miles. Soon to be added to the fine and delicious fare in the restaurant will be a wide range of prime steaks. It was a day to mark another milestone in the Tribe's economic development across the Lake Traverse Reservation and the region - the opening of the new Dakota Sioux Casino Hotel. Following prayers, songs, and words of support by Tribal and community leaders, a ribboncutting ceremony was held in the entrance to the hotel. Work began last November on the 92-room, 54,000 sq. ft. hotel, located on the east side of the casino, began last November. It is architecturally striking, a tall five-story structure, which includes luxurious rooms, including hospitality suites. There are seven standard suites named after the seven Dakota Bands. The remainder of the hotel has many features for guests' comfort, including a pillared lobby completely furnished, showcasing a star quilt tiled floor. Two main offices are located at the entrance and the cost of the hotel project was $7.9 million. The new hotel is just the beginning of a comprehensive expansion that has been in the planning stages for several years, spanning several tribal administrations. Also planned are a new casino, concert hall, bowling alley, and water park. tribal officials want to see these additions phased in over the next few years. The anticipated cost is $16-17 million. Travis Carrico, Dakota Nation Gaming CEO, said the opening of the hotel marks the start of a new future, not only for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, but for the area as a whole. "It (the hotel) is a symbol of what can be done when an entire community comes together," he said. SWO Tribal Vice-Chairman Scott German gave the main address, explaining some of the history of how the Sisseton- Wahpeton Tribe arrived at the unique design visitors will see when they first enter the hotel. The lobby features a handcrafted chandelier hanging from the ceiling and a stonecarved star symbol in the floor, both being representations of the Tribe's seven Districts. Scott German said the seven points of the star not only represent each of the seven Districts, "but also the Indian belief of where we come from." He said the design of the foyer is an integration of the history of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, with the star design being the focal point. "These small details were important to us, because it was about us," German said. "As Travis said, it's that working together that got us here." Former Tribal Chairman Andy Grey, Sr., who has had firsthand involvement in the Tribe's gaming enterprises for over 20 years, also spoke. The former Chairman served as manager of the Dakota Sioux Bingo Hall at Watertown, when it was transformed from a bingo hall to a high stakes blackjack gaming business. Andy Grey said the hotel is another step the Tribe has taken to improve life for the Oyate as well as for others of the entire area. "Our financial success has been a Tribal success and helped others," he said. "This project will enhance Dakota Sioux Casino and the entire area economy." The recently completed 16-story structure offers guests 170 new rooms and suites as well as a unique lobby area. Stepping into the new hotel lobby, guests will discover an inviting space filled with eye-catching elements. A massive stone fireplace reaches up through a skylight. On it, water cascades down over decorative glass. A plush seating area surrounds the fireplace where guests are able to relax and enjoy treats from a gourmet coffee bar. A large reception desk, a luggage storage area, a private room for safedeposit boxes and a nearby valet are designed to make registration and check-out easy and convenient. The Heritage Room adds a unique focal point to the new lobby. Visitors enter this walk-in display to experience the sights and sounds of Native American culture through artifacts, regalia and music. An express elevator transports visitors to the new tower where guests will notice a decidedly different look when entering the new rooms. The design is sleek and modern and the colors are earthy and warm. Hotel guests will find spacious floor plans plus all of the amenities they've come to expect from Mystic Lake, which is owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. We've designed the new hotel tower so that it blends in with the rest of Mystic Lake's physical structure yet its features and amenities are inviting, relaxing and comfortable, said SMSC Tribal Chairman Stanley Crooks. It is our hope that Mystic Lake guests will feel welcome in the new space and enjoy their stay. The new tower brings the total number of hotel rooms at Mystic Lake to 600. Mystic Lake Casino Hotel is the premier entertainment destination in the Midwest, offering guests more than 4,000 slot machines, 88-blackjack tables and high-stakes bingo. Located in Prior Lake, Minnesota Lake is just 25 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Eleven acres of native wildflowers have been planted to bloom in The golf course contains more than 650 mature trees, and an additional 500 trees were planted this summer. The Meadows at Mystic Lake contains primarily Ash, Maple, Norway Pine, White Pine, and Aspen trees. For more information about the new Mystic Lake Hotel Tower, visit for golf information, visit Grand Traverse Resort and Spa Renovation Plans Grand Traverse Resort and Spa has expanded its multiphase property wide renovation with a plan to renovate the interiors of 219 privately owned condominiums that participate in the resort's rental program. Condominium renovation, which started in 2004, is projected to be complete in 2007 and condominium owners will invest over $6 million. Refurbishming rental condominiums is an essential component of the overall improvement of the resort, said Andrew Bateman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the 900-acre property near Traverse City, Michigan. Our guests expect and deserve the best resort experience that we can deliver, including condominiums. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is investing heavily to renovate the hotel and tower complexes and resort infrastructure. In addition, we are working closely with condo owners and the condominium associations as they invest in their properties to help maintain and enhance the value of their units. The multi-year property wide renovation of the resort started when it was acquired by the Grand Traverse Band in March To date, the Tribe has invested nearly $9 million in upgrades and improvements throughout the property, and by the end of 2005 the total will be nearly $12 million, not including condos. Renovations and upgrades are being done in phases to avoid interference with group conferences and meetings. In Phase Three, the resort is renovating 180 tower guest rooms at a cost of approximately $1.8 million and other areas of the resort also will be renovated. In addition, the two indoor pools and the surrounding deck in the resort's 100,000 sq. ft. spa complex are being resurfaced and the resort's telephone system is being upgraded. By the end of 2005, a multi-year total of nearly $12 million will have been spent in renovations, not including the 219 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom condominiums. The dental clinic, which will adjoin the Kickapoo Health Center, is scheduled to open in summer This is a historic day, said Steve Cadue, Kickapoo Tribal Chairman, not only because this dental clinic will be a first of its kind, but also because we are continuing to improve health services for all tribal members. Currently, those without dental insurance have to drive to the Haskell Clinic in Lawrence, Kansas, for treatment. It can be a 200-mile round trip for some. Sandra Keo, Chairman of the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri, Leon Campbell, Chairman of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas & Nebraska, John Daugherty, Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Director, and Cadue each lifted a shovel of dirt to break ground. This clinic is a big step in the improvement of overall health services in the Native American community. It is a perfect example how tribal members can work together for the betterment of all our members, Daugherty said. The two-story, 3,600 sq. ft. facility will have three treatment offices and support areas. It will feature an additional 1,800 sq. ft. walkout area. The clinic was designed by Poe and Associates, Architects of Topeka, Kansas, and will be built by the Kickapoo Construction Co. Mooretown Rancheria Announces Ground Breaking of 84-Room Hotel Mooretown Rancheria recently announced that it would be adding a new 84-room hotel called The Lodge at Feather Falls Casino. The three-story facility will be built northeast of Feather Falls Casino and will overlook the Sutter Butte Mountain Range. The lobby of The Lodge will have a magnificent two-story stone fireplace, accented by an open beam ceiling. Hotel guests will be able to enjoy an indoor/outdoor swimming pool and an outdoor patio and spa. Additional amenities will include a workout room complete with exercise equipment and an indoor steam room. The 84-room lodge will have 17 superior quality suites, and will also feature two luxurious 800 sq. ft. VIP suites. Each VIP suite will be equipped with a stone walkin shower, large living room, plasma television, fireplaces in both the bedroom and living room, and a large wet bar. In planning The Lodge at Feather Falls Casino, Mooretown Rancheria has selected a local architectural firm from Chico, Nichols, Melburg and Rossetto. According to Mooretown Rancheria Tribal Chairman Gary Archuleta, Nichols, Melburg and Rossetto were chosen to design The Lodge at Feather Falls Casino due to their attention to detail as well as their ability to balance a building's structure with natural environmental surroundings. David Rogers, one of two principal architects for Nichols, Melburg and Rossetto, will be leading the Chico-based design team. Rogers was the architect for the Feather Falls Casino expansion just a few short years ago. Mooretown Rancheria is confident that the design of The Lodge at Feather Falls will be an attractive addition to their resort complex, and provide quality accommodations for travelers. Mooretown Rancheria's Tribal Council has chosen the construction firm Flintco, Inc., based in Sacramento, to build the new $11 million lodge. Flintco, Inc. was selected in part due to their expertise in design build projects as well as their reputation for construction excellence. Flintco Inc., a division of Flint Industries, is the 33rd largest construction company in the US and has been in business since In the past 15 years, they have built 35 hotels and have an annual income in excess of $600 million dollars. Coquille Indian Tribe officials and community leaders took part in the groundbreaking ceremonies marking the launch of the first business enterprise on CEDCO's acre waterfront development property. At that time Tribal leaders told our communities to 'watch for great things to come.' We are proud to be here today to launch the first of the many great things that will rise on this location. The park will feature 100 standard spaces, 68 pullthrough and 32 back-in spaces, as well as two super spaces designed to accommodate maximum-sized vehicles. A registration and facilities building will offer laundry machines, restrooms and showers, and a storage area along with a meeting room and patio. Because it is located directly on the Coos Bay waterfront, the park has been designed with environmental protections in mind. A grasscovered swale surrounds the RV sites to capture any run-off and filter it through a storm water system. Landscaping will feature vegetation that is natural to the bay area. With site preparation already begun, CEDCO expects to begin construction this fall. Plans call for the park to be open before summer vacations begin in CEDCO, the business arm of the Coquille Indian Tribe, is committed to taking a proactive, positive role in the well-being of Oregon's South Coast. As the second largest employer in Coos County, Oregon, CEDCO manages The Mill Casino Hotel along with business ventures in assisted living, organic cranberry farming and telecommunications.
