2 Dear Yale Traveler Explore the dynamic crossroads of the Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Slavic civilizations, where deep-rooted cultures have flourished for more than three thousand years. Next spring, this comprehensive and custom-designed small ship itinerary takes us along the pathway of these great civilizations through five countries Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy and to six UNESCO World Heritage sites. We begin in Athens, the birthplace of Western civilization. Aboard the exclusively chartered m.y. Variety Voyager, we ll discover hidden gems along the beautiful Adriatic and Aegean coastlines at just the right pace, where daily life unfolds much as it has for hundreds of years. Call on splendid walled cities, medieval villages, picture-perfect islands and the spectacular fjord-like Bay of Kotor while sailing pristine blue waters. Our ship is small, carrying only 60 guests and providing stylish accommodations and an intimate atmosphere. Visit historic Split and the third-century Roman Emperor Diocletian s Palace, now home to a thriving 21 st -century community; the seventh-century walled city of Dubrovnik; and smaller, seldom-visited ports of call inaccessible to larger ships picturesque Kotor, Montenegro; the remarkable Greco-Roman site of Butrint, Albania; the Old City of Corfu, Greece, settled in the eighth century B.C.; and Itea, for the ancient Greek site of Delphi. Transit the extraordinary Corinth Canal, possible only by a small ship that can maneuver the narrow passage between soaring 300-foot limestone walls. We ll be joined on this journey by Prof. John Hale 73, an archaeologist and classical historian with an expertise in nautical and underwater archaeology. Over many trips with YET, Prof. Hale has well-earned his reputation as an excellent and engaging speaker and we re delighted to have him aboard. I hope you will join us for this exceptional cruise from Athens to Venice, two iconic centers of flourishing civilizations and remarkable culture. The program includes all accommodations, meals and specially designed excursions, and features exclusive cultural enrichments. I hope you can join us. Happy travels, Kathy Edersheim 87 Senior Director, International Alumni Relations and Travel Association of Yale Alumni

Corinth Canal/Itea (b/l/r/d) Monday, April 25 Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cruise through the Corinth Canal, the conduit for the migration of civilizations between the Aegean and Adriatic Seas. First proposed at the end of the seventh century B.C., the canal was not fully realized until its completion by a French engineering company in An impressive waterway that cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth, at only 70 feet wide, it is so narrow that only small ships can make its passage. Ancient Greeks of all classes flocked to the sacred ground on Mount Parnassus to consult Pythia, the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo. Today, Butrint s ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage site, trace the rise and fall of three thousand years of ancient civilizations, from the Greek and Roman to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. The Greco Roman amphitheater highlights the city s rich cultural life during boom times. Public baths, a gymnasium and an aqueduct built by Emperor Augustus offer glimpses of Butrint as a Roman port, while the intricately tiled Baptistery exhibits its early Christian symbolism. A short drive to Lekursi Castle provides a panoramic view of the coastal city of Sarandë. Kotor, Montenegro (b/l/d) Wednesday, April 27 Montenegro is one of the newest nations in the world, having gained its independence in The Bay of Kotor, deeply carved into the Montenegrin mountains, leads to Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Venetian baroque Old Town and medieval fortifications.
