Dear Alumni and Friends, We are delighted to sponsor ISLAND LIFE IN ANCIENT GREECE AND TURKEY, one of the most popular programs in the innovative VILLAGE LIFE series. It is a great voyage of discovery into the very cradle of Western civilization highlighted by visits to four UNESCO World Heritage sites. Our exclusive itinerary is ideal for exploring this fabulous region s ancient history and experiencing its way of life in our own era. Over 3,000 years ago, the Mycenaeans founded one of the earliest great civilizations on the archipelago stretching from Greece to Turkey across Homer s wine-dark Aegean Sea. Sail the very same waters Ulysses sailed on this seven-night cruise aboard the exclusively chartered, deluxe small ship M.S. L AUSTRAL. Launching in 2011, this 120-cabin vessel showcases a new generation of ship design and technology and will also set unprecedented standards in elegance and comfort. This carefully designed itinerary features ports of call of the classical world in Greece, the islands of Delos, Mykonos, Santorini, Pátmos; medieval Rhodes; and along Turkey s Aegean coast, where you will visit the fabled sites of Troy and Ephesus, the most spectacularly preserved Greco-Roman city in the world. Among the many CULTURAL ENRICHMENTS you will enjoy on this popular program is our specially arranged VILLAGE FORUM, where residents of Pátmos will share their insights into modern life on an ancient isle. To make your experience even more personal and meaningful, we will offer an introduction to simple Greek phrases and their pronunciation. Faculty will provide enriching lectures. Exclusive C EST BON! CULINARY TRADITIONS optional excursions celebrate the regional cuisines, wines and local foods of our ports of call. And, we will taste the authentic flavors of Greece s cuisine during special cooking demonstrations presented by the ship s master chef and during our daily meals. The warm camaraderie of fellow alumni, the exceptional value of deluxe ship accommodations, all meals, most excursions, and the comfort of unpacking only once fused with the lure of classical world ports of the Aegean make for a richly enticing program. It will sell out quickly, so make your reservation today! Charles F. Lennon, Jr. 61, 62 M.A. Executive Director, Alumni Association Associate Vice President, University Relations Kate Telesca, 97 Travel Program Director, Alumni Association P.S. L AUSTRAL/ RETURN TO THE U.S. ISTANBUL AND CAPPADOCIA POST-CRUISE OPTIONS Explore the glories of Delos, where these lions were masterfully crafted 600 years before Christ. v UNESCO site Cruise Itinerary Air Routing Canakkale Troy Aegean Sea TURKEY Cappadocia Delphi Athens Ephesus Piraeus Mykonos Kusadasi Patmos Delos GREECE v Santorini Istanbul Rhodes ATHENS Birthplace of democracy and home to many of history s greatest philosophers and poets from Socrates to Herodotus, Athens is unmatched in its contributions to early Western civilization. Today, the city s ancient greatness is encapsulated in the spectacular Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the gracefully proportioned Parthenon, a perfect example of Doric architecture dedicated to the goddess Athena in 438 B.C. DELOS The mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, Delos is considered one of the most sacred islands in the Greek world and is as central to Greek spiritual life as Olympia or Delphi. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, the sleek statues carved from Náxian marble withstood the blight of wind and sea water for nearly 2,600 years on the magnificent Lion Terrace before they were moved to the Archaeological Museum to prevent further deterioration. The Sanctuary of Apollo is a spectacularly rich archaeological site with remains of three separate temples from the fifth and sixth centuries B.C. Delos awe-inspiring ruins also include an entire district of ancient houses dating from 700 B.C., the ancient Theater built in 300 B.C. and the House of the Dolphins built in the second century B.C. MYKONOS According to ancient legend, this island s craggy hills and clefts were formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. Its iconic windmills, sugar-white cube houses and azure bays epitomize life in the Greek Isles. Mykonos Little Venice resembles, in design, Italy s famed canal city. OPTIONAL EXCURSION: Enjoy a panoramic tour of Mykonos including a private ouzo tasting. v

5 The splendid and graceful Blue Mosque is one of the most beautiful Ottoman monuments in the world. SANTORINI Sail to Santorini, one of the most spectacular of the Aegean Islands, and into its great harbor, bordered by black sand beaches. A cable car rises above Santorini to the town of Thíra, whose stunning white walls stand in stark contrast against the dark volcanic cliffs. The picturesque cliff-side village of Oia offers spectacular panoramic views of the island s coastline and the surrounding seas. Far below, in what remains of an extinct volcano s caldera, may be legendary Atlantis, possibly lost during a cataclysmic volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C. OPTION: Enjoy lunch and a private tasting of wine produced from Santorini s distinctive grapes. RHODES The island of Rhodes has been one of the most prosperous and strategic strongholds in the eastern Mediterranean since the dawn of time. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Rhodes Town is an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval city, built over a great Hellenistic metropolis. A major Christian outpost during the Crusades, it is the site where the Knights of St. John erected the splendid 11th-century Palace of the Grand Masters. OPTIONAL EXCURSION: Walk through the ancient village of Lindos and enjoy breathtaking views from its acropolis, perched over 500 feet above the town. PÁTMOS, GREECE The small island of Pátmos and its Greek Orthodox Monastery of St. John, a UNESCO World Heritage site, loom large in the history of Christianity. Built in 1088, the monastery is still inhabited by monks who preserve it as a pilgrimage site and place of religious study. St. John the Apostle of Ephesus was known to have been exiled to Pátmos for 18 months and very possibly wrote the Book of Revelation here in A.D. 95. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: Meet residents of Pátmos, who will discuss daily life on an ancient Greek island during the specially arranged VILLAGE FORUM. EPHESUS (KUŞADASI) The Greco-Roman city of Ephesus is one of the world s most dazzling architectural treasures. The beautifully restored façade of the Library of Celsus is breathtaking, and the Marble Way leads to an impressive 24,000-seat amphitheater where St. Paul addressed his Epistle to the Ephesians. According to legend, St. John the Apostle traveled with Mary, the mother of Jesus, to Ephesus, where he wrote his gospel and later died and was buried. In the sixth century, the Basilica of St. John was constructed above his tomb. Today, the ruins and partial reconstruction of this sacred site indicate its impressive size and former splendor. OPTION: Introduction to Turkish culinary specialties, culminating in lunch. TROY (ÇANAKKALE) Located on a windswept plain near Çanakkale, Troy was immortalized by Homer in The Iliad, a chronicle of the Trojan War of the 13th century B.C., and inspired the tales of ancient Greek mythology at the core of Western literature. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, remnants of the Bronze Age citadel and nine cities built over a span of millennia stand on the very site where Troy fell. ISTANBUL, TURKEY This legendary metropolis straddling the Bosphorus Strait is the only city in the world situated on two continents: Europe and Asia. Its historic areas, a UNESCO World Heritage site, include the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque. Stand beneath the great marble columns at the Library of Celsus, Ephesus iconic monument built in 135 A.D.
