One of France's most attractive coastal regions, everything about Brittany is distinctive from its proud identity in terms of its culture and people to its landscape and history. Its long peninsula reaches out 300 km into the Atlantic and towns such as Brest, St Malo and Lorient offer the possibility to experience much of the best that France has to offer: wild coast, white-sand beaches, rolling heathland, dense forest, delicious cuisine and the chance to get back to nature as well as UNESCO Heritage sites. The Breton ports are a real asset to themed cruises, with lots to offer from glorious walled cities and castles to extravagant churches, gardens, as well as gastronomy, Celtic culture and fascinating maritime history. Brittany's many parks and gardens come in all shapes and sizes and are just waiting to be explored. Whether botanical, ornamental, historical, landscaped or kitchen gardens, the region is proud of its natural heritage. Emmanuel BERTHIER BOËLLE Yvon LPO Jean-Patrick GRATIEN PHOVOIR

14 Jean-Patrick GRATIEN Brest The biggest and the deepest North Atlantic French Port Brest with its evocative street names Siam, Bouguainville, La Fayette, Segalen is a place where the traveller can unwind in a variety of ways: shopping, restaurants, museums and galleries, theatres, cinemas, bars and pubs with a truly Celtic atmosphere. From the Crozon peninsula, at sunset, the traveller can marvel at the hundred or so standing stones of Lagatjar, a spiritual centre of forgotten civilizations. Brittany, formerly Celtic Armorica, is situated on the very edge of Europe and has, for thousands of years, been the homeland of intrepid sea-farers. Latitude N Longitude 4 30 W BREST PARIS Suggestions of visits around Brest Brest Thanks to its geographical location, Brest has always had close ties with the sea. The streets of Brest retain an air of adventure and the memory of the Royal and national navy is ever present. (5 mn) Brest Castle is a medieval fortress. It is home to the "National Marine Museum" which boasts a fascinating collection of model boats, paintings, new temporary exhibitions, sculptures and ornaments. In Océanopolis (5 mn) near the marina, visit the only ocean discovery centre in Europe. Enjoy the polar, tropical and temperate pavilions, the aquariums, films, exhibitions, etc. Browse round the shops. Emmanuel Berthier Jardins Abbaye de Daoulas (20 km - 20 min) International Centre where civilisations meet. Discover the unique Roman cloister in Brittany, the monumental fountain oratory, the garden with medicinal plants redeveloped in 1995 to display more than 250 plants. Quimper (72 km - 1h00 - expressway) "Ville d'art et d'histoire" thanks to the quality of its architectural heritage: the St Corentin cathedral, 16th and 17th century houses below its rampartsand the quays along the River Odet. Quimper is the historic capital of "Cornouaille". Faïenceries HB Henriot Quimper continue the art of hand-painted crockery and the famous Quimper technique. Since 1690, each piece has been decorated by hand and signed by the artist. Studio DIAPHANE Presqu'île de Crozon (60 km - 1h) South side: A rocky headland covered in moorland and heathland giving a panoramic view of the Cap de la Chèvre and the Bay of Douarnenez. North side: the port of Camaret sits in a splendid cove sheltered by the rocky outcrops of the Crozon Peninsula. Discover the "Pointe de Penhir". Pays des Abers Plouguerneau (30 km - 40 min) In the area of the Breton Fjords "les Abers", the rias sculpt the coastline. Visit the lighthouse on Vierge island where you will have a breathtaking panoramic view from the top of the highest lighthouse in Europe. The Pointe Saint Mathieu Plougonvelin (23 km - 30 min) overlooks the Iroise sea and is home to a magnificient ruby- coloured lighthouse which was built in the ruins of a former 17th century Benedictine abbey. Visit the restored military fortress of Bertheaume. Locronan (63 km 1h10) Locronan is one of the most beautiful villages in France, unchanged for centuries. Huddled against the flank of the mountain, the village raises its blued shaded granit houses at the foot of its square, squabbly, keeplike looking and solitary churchtower. Sacred in its essence in ancient times, becoming capital of sailcloth in Brittany, from the end of the 15th until the middle of the 18th century, this high place of breton tourism, beloved by the filmmakers, doesn't forget its double ancestral vocation.
