2 ewsletter Jan-Feb 2017 ews in rief onphula domestic airport opening deferred to arch 2017 viation: he deadline for the completion of the onphula domestic airport in Kanglung, rashigang has been deferred until arch next year. he airport is expected to be operational starting pril 2017 according to Department of ir ransport (D). Due to some technical issues the onphula airport, which was supposed to be completed by ctober this year, was delayed. eavy rainfall in the month of July at the location also added to the deferral. he airport, which was closed in 2013, is being renovated to improve safety features and compliance with international standards. ne of the major changes being carried out is on the realignment of one half of the runway. nother major change is flattening and resurfacing the runway. he slope of the runway, which was 3.8 percent, has been brought down to below two percent, which is acceptable by international standards, said Karma Wangchuk. he changes to onphula airport is being funded by D under the ir ransport Connectivity nhancement project. total of SD 6.9 million has been provided to improve all three domestic airports. further SD 4 million has also been earmarked by D to supplement the project if required. hutan celebrates nternational ountain Day vent: hutan observed nternational ountain Day themed ountain Cultures: celebrating diversity and strengthening identity at the Clock ower Square in himphu on 12 Dec he day is observed this year to highlight the variety and richness of mountain cultures, promote the vast array of mountain identities and ensure that indigenous rights are recognised and traditional ways endure. he occasion is also used to raise awareness on Climate Change especially among the youth through dance and art. 3 ewsletter Jan-Feb 2017 pcoming Festival rongsa shechu 5 th 9 th January rongsa, the sacred and temporal heart of the country is a two day journey from himphu. Situated in central hutan, it was once the seat of power over central and eastern regions. oth the first and second kings of hutan ruled the country from this ancient seat and it is customary for the crown prince to serve as the rongsa Penlop ( governor ) prior to ascending the throne. he dzong built in 1648, is a massive structure with many levels, sloping down the contours of the ridge upon which it is built. he dzong s highly strategic position, on the only connecting route between astern and Western hutan allowed the rongsa Penlop to control travel and trade in the country effectively placing him in command of the whole of the Central and astern regions of the country. f the many festivals held in various parts of rongsa, the grandest is the three day annual shechu. his festival bring together people from all walks of life and falls sometime in the month of December. n addition to traditional mask dances, visitors can witness the unfurling of the sacred hongdrol and receive blessings from high ranking monks. People also receive blessings from the sacred angtens that is opened during the last day of the shechu.

4 ewsletter Jan-Feb 2017 PCS VS CK ational Geographic Chhukha is a hot, wet region of dense Sub-ropical forests located in South Western hutan. he region is home to many important plant and animal species. here are two main ethnic groups present in Chhukha, the galops and the hotshampas. he hotshampas are Southern hutanese with epalese origins and this creates wealth of cultural diversity in the region with various non-uddhist festivals and practices being carried out. he Chhukha region is religiously significant as it has been blessed by many renowned uddhist masters including the venerable ama Drakpa Jamtsho in the 17 th century. e established the Jabar Goemba (onastery) at a site surrounded by five mountains with an auspicious resemblance to the five religious hats worn by lamas. he main relic of this monastery is a holy Phurba or ritual dagger that is said to have flown to the monastery from ibet. egend holds that even today the dagger continues to defy gravity. nother important religious site in the region is the shamdrak Goemba. his monastery dates back to the 17 th century and was founded by am gawang Drakpa. t contains important relics such as 100 Ceremonial Drums and a large stone slab that is attributed to p Chundu the guardian deity of aa. he most distinctive feature of Chhukha is the Chhukha and ala ydropower projects. he two projects tap the fast-running waters of the Wangchhu and Paachhu ivers to produce more than 1,500 egawatts of power. hese two dams are absolutely crucial to the country as they are still the largest providers of revenue for the Kingdom of hutan.
