10 photo: Hans Brinker photo: Hans Brinker Polytechnic City of Innovation Camino de Vera Valencia photo: Hans Brinker In 2000 the Polytechnic University issued a competition to house research institutes with very different requirements up to a total gross floor area of 72,000 m2 The competition had 3 notable aspects: the location, the need to build in 3 separate stages and the lack of a detailed brief for each of the research institutes The architects invented a general system that accommodate very different individual briefs which are initially unknown It allows different research institutes (heavy, light, agricultural, computer, industrial etc laboratories) to be lodged, give each the greatest possible degree of independence while remaining a single building ánd the flexibility to change in the course of time They focussed on 5 issues to achieve this: vertical stratification, horizontal stratification, circulation flows, spatial overlaps and, of course, natural light regulation systems The shape is the final result, wood solves the contact with the earth and silk-screened glass with the sky 2007 Luís Manuel Ferrer Obanos Polytechnic University of Valencia hansbrinker 10

13 photo: Ángel Baltanás photo: Ángel Baltanás Office building on Mariano Cuber road Mariano Cuber Valencia As an essential starting point we wanted to use the maximum volume of the site, and all possibilities that every facade would give, in order to solve all the problems about shared walls with the next building We wanted to achieve a southern aspect for the offices spaces, improving then also, the control conditions related to the natural lighting and direct radiation as well as the ventilation of the spaces That is why, a bioclimatic threshold is placed in front of Mariano Cuber road A four stages space protected by a lattice, which not only serves as an open and big hall, but also converts into the big environmental building's regulator To the laid out topology we may subtitle that it has been sought the flexibility of the space in order to offer a capable framework to host as for that, a wide variety of the tertiary sector necessities Project is not public! 15 Alemeda bridge Alameda Valencia The Alemeda bridge or Puente de Calatrava is built over the Turia river bed As the bridge resembles a comb, it has been popularly nicknamed the "Peineta", the Spanish for decorative combs From the transit track it takes an inclined arc of 14 meters, which contributes to the stability of the bridge, which is 26 meters width and 131 meters in length Underneath the bridge you'll find the underground station The steel canopies that mark the entrances to the underground station can be lowered by hydraulically driven rods, to rest flush with the pavers, thus sealing the station The station is a centrally located stop for trains which connect the various suburbs of Valencia m² Santiago Calatrava dirkverwoerd 15

18 Mercado Central Market Building Plaza del Mercado Valencia Valencia After several attempts of initiating the construction of a new market (1869, 1874 and 1907), it is in 1910 when the Valencia City Hall announced a new national tender for the construction of the new Mercado Central (Central Market) Six different proposals were submitted and it was settled in favour of the the Catalan architects Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial, both of them collaborators of the well-known Catalan architect Luis Domenech Montaner The Central Market building works started in 1904 and ended in 1928 It is a fantastic example of Art Nouveau architecture While the building itself was constructed in the beginning of the twentieth century, it displays genuine Valencian style with lots of colour, ceramics and mosaics Mercado Central is one of the oldest running food markets in Europe The thing that really jumped out is the unique roof comprised of domes and sloping sections of various heights that allow light to shine through coloured window panels m² Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial Monday - Saturday: 7:30 to 14:30 h dirkverwoerd 18
