2 Palau de les Arts Pont de Monteolivet Valencia This is the final segment of Valencia's 'City of Arts and Sciences', following the opening of L Hemisfèric in 1998, the Prince Felipe Science Museum and L Umbracle in 2000 and the opening to the public of L Oceanogràfic in 2003 The building is designed with a dual intention: that of acting as a multi-hall auditorium and also forming an urban landmark It is used as an opera house, dance and music theatre The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía has 4 different halls and also has facilities for teaching and other activities closely connected with the artistic and cultural fields The roof is the most representative part of the complex The roof or plume is the most structurally spectacular detail, 230m in length and 70m in height, while the two shells which embrace the building on the outside are made of laminated steel with an approximate weight of 3,000 tons and feature delicate ceramic work (trencadís) on the outside photo: Wojtek Gurak m² Santiago Calatrava Generalitat Valenciana anandi_schiphorst Depending on the agenda of performances Check the website of the City of Arts: Motorway A-7 and N- 340 road: go across the Comunidad Valenciana from North to South Motorway A-3: connects Madrid and Valencia Motorway 234: connects Valencia with Aragón, Castilla-León and the north of the Iberian Peninsula Valencia coach station is located on the bank of the former course of the River Túria This is the stopping place for regular services arriving from all over Just cross the river and catch EMT The following EMT buses reach the project: 19, 35, 95 y

4 photo: Hans Brinker photo: Hans Brinker Polytechnic City of Innovation Camino de Vera Valencia photo: Hans Brinker In 2000 the Polytechnic University issued a competition to house research institutes with very different requirements up to a total gross floor area of 72,000 m2 The competition had 3 notable aspects: the location, the need to build in 3 separate stages and the lack of a detailed brief for each of the research institutes The architects invented a general system that accommodate very different individual briefs which are initially unknown It allows different research institutes (heavy, light, agricultural, computer, industrial etc laboratories) to be lodged, give each the greatest possible degree of independence while remaining a single building ánd the flexibility to change in the course of time They focussed on 5 issues to achieve this: vertical stratification, horizontal stratification, circulation flows, spatial overlaps and, of course, natural light regulation systems The shape is the final result, wood solves the contact with the earth and silk-screened glass with the sky 2007 Luís Manuel Ferrer Obanos Polytechnic University of Valencia hansbrinker 4

6 photo: Marco De Trizio photo: Marco De Trizio Valencia Congress Centre Carrer Els Ports Valencia One of Europe's leading conference centres, the Valencia Congress Centre (Palacio de Congresos) opened in 1998 It contains three auditoria with seating for 1460, 460 and 250 The building has been designed to provide excellent acoustic conditions for conferences and similar events The principal auditorium provides accommodation for 1460 people, but the centre's flexible design allows this main hall to be connected via video and sound link to the two smaller auditioria, bringing the total capacity of single events to 2170 participants The centre is an avant-garde building and is fully equipped with state-of-the-art congress and exhibition amenities photo: Marco De Trizio m² Acoustics consultant Foster & Partners Arup City of Valencia Marco_De_Trizio 6

7 photo: Duccio Malagamba photo: Duccio Malagamba Cultural Centre Cabanyal Plaza Rosario Valencia "The El Cabanyal district, a former fishing port in the east of Valencia, is a mix of small-scale historical development and buildings from the 1960s and 70s Easily distinguished against this heterogeneous environment is the El Musical cultural centre with its angular, exposed concrete structure and clear, stark language of forms It was built on a U-shaped plot, almost entirely enclosed by the fire walls of the surrounding buildings These circumstances presented technical challenges in construction, particularly as regards the back wall of the auditorium Strongly fluctuating groundwater levels called for a fully waterproof ground slab El Musical replaces an earlier arts centre which could no longer be renovated The only part of this older structure to be retained is the Plaza del Rosario facade; partly reconstructed, this facade maintains the distinctive urban character of the square Behind this classicist portal, the visitor is surprised to find a modern, spacious interior" Eduardo de Miguel Arbones Ayuntamiento de Valencia MarckNoplas photo: Duccio Malagamba 7

8 Mercado Central Market Building Plaza del Mercado Valencia Valencia After several attempts of initiating the construction of a new market (1869, 1874 and 1907), it is in 1910 when the Valencia City Hall announced a new national tender for the construction of the new Mercado Central (Central Market) Six different proposals were submitted and it was settled in favour of the the Catalan architects Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial, both of them collaborators of the well-known Catalan architect Luis Domenech Montaner The Central Market building works started in 1904 and ended in 1928 It is a fantastic example of Art Nouveau architecture While the building itself was constructed in the beginning of the twentieth century, it displays genuine Valencian style with lots of colour, ceramics and mosaics Mercado Central is one of the oldest running food markets in Europe The thing that really jumped out is the unique roof comprised of domes and sloping sections of various heights that allow light to shine through coloured window panels m² Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial Monday - Saturday: 7:30 to 14:30 h dirkverwoerd 8

9 The Colón Market Conde Salvatierra Valencia The open design of the Colón Market, which was restored in 2002 provides a very pleasant sensation of freshness The interior of the market hosts everything from restaurants and bars to flower stalls and a small market offering delicatessen products The restoration project has recreated an elegant monument in an environment where ultra-modernism goes hand-in-hand with modernism of the past The contemporary project is a counterpoint to the historical building, leaving the eminent character of the monument intact - while creating a space to relax and enjoy the attractive city centre The restoration work focuses on six glass cubes, with interior back-lighting, which house the ground floor establishments, leaving the lower floor for a restaurant, shopping area, and market hall The lower floor connects visually with the ground floor through a gap at ground level, with escalator access against the backdrop of trees that reach upwards from the lower ground floor and a fountain m² Infrastructure consultant Francisco Mora Berenguer AUMSA Valencia city council dirkverwoerd From 7:00 to 1:30am The market building is located between the streets of Cirilo Amorós, Conde Salvatierra, Martínez Ferrando and Jorge Juan 9
