2 THE SYMPOSIUM VENUE The Maltese archipelago is situated at the heart of the Mediterranean sea. Throughout the centuries all major maritime powers have been attracted to Malta because of its strategic location and its natural harbours. These included the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, the Knights of the Order of St. John, the French and finally the British. The Republic of Malta is today an independent state, and a member of the European Union. Malta has a rich architectural heritage which includes the oldest free standing megalithic structures. After the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights of the Order of St.John built the new fortified city of Valletta, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, and town planning. The University of Malta was established in 1592 as a Jesuit College. The Valletta Campus at the Old University Building is a Baroque Palace. The Symposium will be held at the Aula Magna of the Old University building. Thursday 6 th May Harbour Crossing: Harbour crossing from the Old Dogana in Valletta across the Grand Harbour, to Cittaa Vittoriosa, Birgu in traditional Maltese Boats (Dghajsa). 2.Cultural Visits: Walking tour of Citta Vittoriosa, Birgu. 3. Dinner: Dinner, Birgu, Citta Vittoriosa. Meeting Place: Grand Hotel Excelsior Lobby. The restaurant is located in the South of Malta within an 18th century fortification overlooking Birzebbugia bay. 16 Sunday 9 th May Cultural Tour: Full day tour to Gozo, Malta s Sister Island. [45Euro per person] After a twenty-minute ferry crossing, the tour starts with a visit to Ggantija Prehistoric Temples followed by Ta Kola Windmill. We then proceed to Dwejra to see the Azure Window, Fungus Rock and the Inland Sea. We will also visit a fishing village. 2. Lunch: Free time for lunch. Date: Sunday 9 th May 2010 Time: 08.30hrs (Departure from Grand Hotel Excelsior, Return at around 18.30hrs) Dwejra Nature Park, Gozo.

19 Events Organised for Accompanying Persons On request, and subject to demand by a number of persons, cultural tours will be organized for persons accompanying delegates, during the days of the conference (Friday 7 th and Saturday 8 th May 2010, in the morning and/or afternoon).
