3 Detailed Itinerary Days 1-2: Arrival A dream comes true as your wide-bodied jet thunders off the airstrip, Europebound! Watch the sun rise up to meet your airplane, after a short night. Spain glides by beneath your airplane, in shades of sienna, as you head towards Madrid's Barajas Airport. Get settled in your madrileño hotel and explore your surroundings. Stroll in the Plaza Mayor, the heart of the Old City. For lunch, why not duck into a sidewalk mesón for a sopa de pescado and some calamares? Meals included: Dinner Overnight: Madrid Day 3: Madrid City Sightseeing, Optional Flamenco Dinner and Show On a tour of the city, you will be introduced to the sights: Plaza Mayor, Calle de Cuchilleros, Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España with the Cervantes Monument, Gran Vía, Calle Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Cibeles and Neptune Fountains. Local Guide A half-day local guide, well-educated and speciallytrained on the history and culture of Madrid and its surroundings, will accompany your group. Prado Museum You will visit the Prado Museum to see the world-famous paintings of El Greco, Goya and Velázquez, among other collections from the 12th to the 19th centuries. Free time in Madrid The afternoon is free to plan as you wish. You may wish to visit the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía to view modern works by Dalí, Miró and Picasso, notably the haunting Guernica, a memorial to the victims of the Nazi bombing of a Basque village, long kept out of Spain because of the artist's refusal to recognize Franco's dictatorship. Optional Flamenco dinner and show Tonight, enjoy dinner and an evening of traditional entertainment, flamenco! The poet Federico García Lorca called it "the most gigantic creation of the Spanish people." You will long remember its complex and insistent rhythms, castanets, guitars and clacking heels as the highlight of your trip to Spain. Optional: Flamenco dinner and show Overnight: Madrid Day 4: Excursion to El Escorial and Valley of the Fallen Travel to the religious retreat of King Philip II, El Escorial, where he and other Spanish kings lie buried. On a guided tour, see the Royal Pantheon and Crypt of the Royal Children, the apartments of King Philip, and the basilica with Titian's fresco of St. Lawrence's martyrdom, as well as the lavish library which contains 40,000 rare manuscripts, including St. Teresa of Avila's diary. You'll visit the somber Valley of the Fallen, nestled in the Guadarrama Mountains. The site was intended as a monument to Fascism, but is now a memorial to soldiers from both sides who died during the Civil War. See the 500- foot-high cross, which is the world's largest monumental cross, and the entrance to the underground basilica (currently closed to visitors) that General Franco ordered carved inside a hill of solid granite by prisoners of war from the Republican side. Make your way across the vast esplanade for a panoramic view of valleys and mountains. Free time in Madrid The afternoon is free to plan as you wish. You may want to visit Retiro Park. Once royalty's playground, el Parque del Retiro now opens its gardens, fountains and recreational areas to the public. Boat rides on the lake, as well as clowns, jugglers and magic shows (seasonal) add to the attraction. You may want to shop in the elegant El Corte Inglés department store, or among the fashionable boutiques in the Calle Serrano. Overnight: Madrid Day 5: Toledo, Madrid, Train to Barcelona It's off to Toledo! The city is surrounded on three sides by the Río Tajo, which has cut a deep gorge out of the encircling mountains. Christianity, Judaism and Islam coexist on the tiny streets of this ancient city, which was once the capital of Spain. Indeed, the entire panorama of Spanish history is embodied in its churches, synagogues, Moorish mosques and fortifications. Guided walking tour in Toledo Your guided walking tour starts at the main square, Plaza de Zocodover. Toledo Cathedral You will visit the cathedral, one of the most venerated in the country. It took almost 300 years to build and was completed in Its treasury contains an impressive display of gold and silver vessels and alabaster sculpture. Santo Tome Visit the Santo Tomé church, which houses El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz, a fresco commissioned in honor of a Spanish nobleman who was known for his generosity and charitable deeds. Synagogue Enjoy a visit to one of the city's two remaining medieval synagogues. Damascene demonstration For centuries, Toledo has excelled in the manufacture of swords and damascene artifacts made of steel inlaid with gold and silver. Skilled artisans carry on the tradition, as you will see during a damascene manufacturing demonstration. Free time Enjoy the remainder of your day in Toledo. You may want to visit the house believed to have been El Greco's. Travel to Madrid's train station You coach will bring you to Madrid's train station. AVE train Madrid-Barcelona An Alta Velocidad train takes you at high speed across the semi-deserts of northern Spain, from the dusty plains of Castile to palmfringed Mediterranean shores. From the Parc de Montjuïc, situated on a hill to the south of the harbor, you'll enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Mediterranean coast. Sagrada Familia Basilica Visit the extraordinary-looking Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, a basilica whose construction was planned in the 1870s. Antonio Gaudí was chosen as its architect in 1883, at the age of 31. For more than forty years, until his death in 1926, he worked to create a unique and huge sanctuary. Still far from completion, it combines elements of Gothic architecture and the tenets of the Modernista movement that are a trademark of Gaudí's work. Visitors can see his grave in the crypt and visit the museum that documents his life and work as well as the history of the sanctuary. Day 7: Excursion to Montserrat Enjoy a visit to Catalonia's holiest place, the Monastery of Montserrat, located amidst the serrated peaks of the Montserrat mountain range. Montserrat has served as a place of pilgrimage since the 12th century. After being destroyed by the French in 1811, the monastery complex was rebuilt and repopulated in 1844 and now includes quaint shops and cafés. Montserrat Funicular Enjoy a funicular ride for the last leg up the mountain, which affords stupendous views stretching from the Pyrénées Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. Montserrat Basilica You will enter the Basilica to view La Moreneta (Black Virgin). This revered statue, said to have been carved out of wood by St. Luke around 50 AD, has been on the mountain since it was rediscovered in 880 AD after being hidden from the Moors. Free time in Barcelona The afternoon is free to plan as you wish. You may want to stroll down Las Ramblas to the Columbus Monument, which marks the spot where the explorer stepped ashore in 1493 after his voyage of discovery. Nearby is Port Vell, the harbor area where you'll find one of Europe's largest aquariums. You may take a walk to the trendy part of town known as Poblenou, where former warehouses now house the studios of artists and photographers. A palm treelined boardwalk leads all the way to the sea. Day 8: Barcelona, Optional Excursion to Figueres Enjoy some free time in Barcelona today. You may choose to visit the Fundació Miró, one of the city's most exciting contemporary art galleries. Spend time at the closest beach, Barceloneta, where Barcelonians regularly flock to feast on seafood in quaint cafés. It's a twenty-minute walk from Las Ramblas. Optional Excursion to Figueres Travel across the rolling hills of Catalonia on your way to Figueres, the hometown of the world's best-known Surrealist artist, Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí y Domenech. Dali Theater-Museum Visit the Dali Theater-Museum, housed in a fantastic building with an egg-crowned roof and tower. Its captivating collections include masterpieces by the artist and curiosities such as the Mae West Room and the Rainy Cadillac. Day 9: Departure Adios España! Barcelona's airport recedes, and you're 500 miles closer to home with each hour in the air. You'll be back!
