2 me and you + something in between bitef polyphony 2007 "me and you+ something in between" is interactive program that gathers independent performing artists from different parts of europe. it is inspired by the book of martin buber ( i and thou heidelberg, 1923) and focused on artistic analysis of encounter in the context of actual controversy that provokes civilization discrepancies at the beginning of our century. the phenomenon of dismissed encounter is explored through the intimate human experience clashed with concrete social framework and backdrops, and artistic analysis opens few questions: how much do we know about each other? in what degree our prejudices influence the increase of borders, conflicts, isolation and other forms of discrepancies? could many words about cultural, ethnical, religious, social and gender prejudices quicken the integrative process or are they some kind of special cold weapons for maintaining deserving and quite necessary human distance? how could it be overshot? how many levels are there in each relational phenomenon, emerging from the live and obligated social context? finally, which are the postulates of authentic human encounter? can we preserve it pure and untouchable from the social and historical assumptions without losing his full potential and sense? the proposed questions are the starting point and inspiration for prospective work based on the cross cultural artistic exchange of involved participants. program lasts five days and consists of serial of workshops, round table and working sessions followed by performances and/or public presentation of participants projects which are conceived and developed within the program. participants have opportunity to explore their own prejudices, to act and react according to their attitudes and feelings, and to generate the authentic artistic response to the evoked issue. september 24th to 28th 2007 cultural centre stari grad belgrade, serbia hop.la! in cooperation with cedeum, dah theatre and ngo "encounter" support: embassy of romania in belgrade, french cultural centre, Italian cultural institute in belgrade and austrian cultural forum belgrade

3 program monday september 24th workshop i: me and you + ego on power conducted by i. slavkovic (institute of psychodrama and ngo "encounter" belgrade) do we become or used to be the isolated entities without curiosity and open space for sharing? how much the main postulates of narcissistic culture foster the phenomena of dismissed encounter and new human disabilities? working session i - me & you: making of during the program, the participants have time to share the idea, concept or project drafts for new artistic production, performance or event. working sessions is organized simultaneously every afternoon in few spaces, and it is followed with "drafts & drops" - final performances or new projects presentations. tuesday september 25th workshop ii - me & you: before new european borders conducted by i. ristic (hop.la! belgrade) how much the current european situation with its political, economical, historical and ideological discrepancies influence/increase/ impact/create the phenomenon of dismissed encounter? which are dividing factors in cross cultural communication? which are the cohesive ones? how can we recognize the cultural prejudices we spell? what can we get from it? working session ii - me & you: making of wednesday september 26th workshop iii : me and you - you or me conducted by jadranka andjelic (dah research theatre center, belgrade) what are the postulates of authentic human encounter? where did we lose them? from encounter to crash, and long way back...

6 programme framework bitef 2007 founded in 1967, bitef (belgrade international theater festival) has continually followed and supported the latest theater trends. growing and developing, it has become one of five most important and biggest european festivals and has, as such, secured itself an unmistakable place at the theater map of the world. it has become one of the most significant culture institutions of our country, but also much more than that. the importance of bitef surpasses all political and cultural borders. for this reason we can identify the history of bitef with a history of contemporary theater. during the revolutionary nineteen sixties, the founders of this festival (mira trailovic, jovan cirilov and their associates) courageously followed tumultuous events in global theater teeming with avant-garde explorations. in the nineteen eighties, bitef has shown belgrade the highest reaches of the art of theater, thus becoming one of the few festivals comprising both experimental forms and significant classic achievements. in spite of political-economic crisis and embargo, in the final decade of the twentieth century, bitef has, thanks to the generous help of international culture centers, government and non-government organizations, managed to keep up with the world, through promoting new theater trends and ultimate theater values. bitef has thus preserved its place in the family of major international festivals, serving as a living proof that, in the society it had been created in, it represents an anti-traditional phenomenon and an epochal value of serbian culture.
