As a result, Lošinj has wellbalanced meteorological elements, such as warm and humid air, but also exceptionally clean sea. Moreover, due to a large number of hours of sunshine per year, Lošinj is one of the sunniest destinations in Croatia. Consequently, mild winters and pleasant summers are beneficial not only for people, but also for the islands rich Mediterranean vegetation. The average annual air temperature on Lošinj is 16 C. 20 UNIQUE CLIMATE OF THE ISLAND OF LOŠINJ scientific studies on the impact of lošinj's climate on human health Even though the origins of medical tourism on the island of Lošinj date back to the 19th century, the conclusions of the first studies on the effect of climate on health are still valid today. Anamarija Margan Šulc, M.D., M.Sc., internal medicine specialist has, together with associates, conducted a research project on the beneficial effects of Lošinj's microclimate on lung function. Methods used in the study: The subjects were the registered guests of a camp in Čikat, and the measuring method was spirometry. Lung function parametres were measured at the time of the subjects' arrival and the time of their departure from Lošinj. Control measurments were performed after 11 days on average. Ninety-three persons, aged 14-84, participated in the study. Conclusion of the study: Results showed that time spent on the island of Lošinj can have beneficial effects for the lung function of persons with breathing problems, which led to the development of the Re-Spiro lung rehabilitation programmes conducted for children and adults in Vitality Hotel Punta. R ecommendation: If you suffer from respiratory tract problems, asthma or respiratory tract disorders, we recommend a vacation on the island of Lošinj in spring and autumn. The study by Dr. Margan Šulc, M.D., is a continuation of the extensive research conducted by Branko Vukelić, M.D., Ph.D., in the period from 1985 to 1999, called "Influence of environmental factors on the evolution of bronchial asthma in children". The research included 4,620 children, aged 7-15, diagnosed with bronchial asthma. The biggest indicator of the healing powers of the island is the fact that some of the children who participated in the study, who are adults today, return to Lošinj every year with their families, to clear their airways and turn their vacation into healing. Even though the occurrence of asthma and lung disease is on the rise both in Croatia and in Europe, the natural healing and recovery might, in the long-term, help manage chronic lung and respiratory tract diseases.
