3 About Novamova Batumi We are bringing Novamova s top-notch Russian instructors and proven teaching methodology to this beautiful Georgian town on the subtropical shores of the Black Sea where each summer Russian tourists from all over the post-soviet Union gather to enjoy the sun and surf. We seek to immerse students in a Russian language environment with the help of our professional instructors, local host families, peer conversation partners, and exciting weekend excursions around the Caucasus. The Novamova program is conducted on the campus of our partner institution, the Batumi State Maritime Academy, conveniently located steps away from the boardwalk and beach. 3

8 Accommodations in Batumi We offer several different types of accommodations to fit your needs. You can select from the following options: Homestay For your ultimate cultural immersion experience, we recommend the homestay option. You will have a private bedroom in the home of a local, Russian-speaking family. Both Bed and Breakfast (BB) and Half Board (HB) options are available. Shared Apartment If you are looking for a bit more independence, the shared apartment option is an ideal solution at an affordable price. Up to three students may share an apartment. Each student will have a private bedroom. No meals are included with this option. Private Apartment If its privacy that you re looking for, we can arrange for a private apartment. No meals are included with this option. Hotels Batumi has many hotel options to fit your needs and budget. As a housing option, we can arrange for a stay in one of our hotel partners. 8

9 Excursions and Tours In addition to the academic component of the program, we offer optional tours and excursions to give you a chance to experience the region s most incredible locations. 9

10 Welcome Lunch and Batumi City Tour On the first Monday of each new course, each new group will have a welcome lunch with staff, teachers, and peer tutors. In the afternoon, there will be an introductory city tour to help you get a feel for your new home away from home. 10

11 Svaneti Mountain Excursion Your journey will take you north along the subtropical Black Sea coast. Soon the road will stray from the shore and climb deep into the heart of the mountains. Your destination is an ancient village in Upper Svaneti, surrounded by breathtaking snow-capped peaks. Mountain Hiking Tour The excursion includes a guided hike to a picturesque alpine meadow. From here, you will see stunning views of some of the highest peaks in the Caucasus. You can also stroll among the pastures and fields below. Upper Svaneti UNESCO World Heritage Sites No trip to the area would be complete without checking out the 9th-12th century watchtowers located in the village. These incredible works of medieval architecture will take you back to a time when local clans feuded amongst themselves. In 1996, this mountainous region of Georgia was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Georgian Mountain Culture All of our excursions have a focus on cultural exchange and this will be no exception. In Upper Svaneti, you will experience the ancient culture and traditions of the Svan people through food and hospitality. You may be surprised that the Svan have their own language, developed over centuries of living in remote mountain valleys. On top of that, the Georgian National Museum in Mestia will provide historical context. 12 Tbilisi and Kakheti On this journey, you will find yourself travelling by train from Batumi to Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia and cultural center of the South Caucasus. You will be amazed by the beautiful architecture and stunning views that characterize the city. UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mtskheta Your adventure will take you to Mtskheta, the Holy City of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The monuments and buildings of Mtskheta have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The incredible architecture of sites like Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery are truly unforgettable. Kakheti wine tour After departing the capital, you will travel to the famous wine producing region of Kakheti. Think you know wine? Think again. Georgia is the birthplace of wine, which was first produced more than 8,000 years ago. Georgian wine is famous throughout the post- Soviet Union for its unique flavors, found nowhere else in the world. In Kakheti, you will tour a 16th century wine cellar, sample delicious local wine varieties, and feast on the locally grown plums and peaches. Art-Geni Music Festival In addition to a city tour of the capital, this trip will include tickets to the Art-Geni Music Festival, a fantastic display of regional music, art, and culture. This annual festival features the best musicians from all over Georgia. This is your opportunity to experience traditional Georgian music. 13 Mtirala National Park Mtirala, which means Crying Mountain in Georgian, is a fitting name for this subtropical rainforest. The area that contains the national park was famous for having the highest level of precipitation in the entire Soviet Union. Mountain waterfalls and delicious homemade specialties During the two day excursion to Mtirala National Park, you will find yourself swimming under a beautiful mountain waterfall, eating delicious homemade Adjarian food, checking out a Georgian weekend cabin, and even sleeping under the stars (if the weather permits). 14 Kutaisi and Vardzia This excursion will take you to Kutaisi, the legislative capital of Georgia and the Vardzia monastery. You will have a home cooked lunch in a nearby village on the way. UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Gelati While in the Kutaisi area, you will visit the 12th Century Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The frescos and architecture are simply amazing. Prometheus Cave Not far from Kutaisi, you will venture deep into the surface of the earth through Prometheus Cave. Over eons, geological processes have forged these stalactite-filled underground caverns. The cave is a masterpiece of natural evolution. Vardzia Monastery After departing the Kutaisi region, you will travel through the town of Borjomi, a name well-known throughout the post-soviet Union for its unmatched mineral water. The village of Vardzia is your destination. A hiking tour will take you to the Vardzia cave monastery, an enormous labyrinth of rooms and passageways carved into a cliff face. This is truly a masterpiece of human engineering. You will stay overnight in the village for a home-cooked Georgian meal. On the way back to Batumi, brace yourselves for the breathtaking views of Goderdzi Pass. With so many things on the agenda, this excursion is not one to miss! 15 Armenia As long as you have travelled all the way to the South Caucasus, it would be a shame not to make the short hop down to Armenia. Armenia is an incredible country with a fascinating history, unique culture, and incredible beauty. Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia Yerevan will be your first stop. Prepare to take a step back into the 20th century, as Yerevan s architecture is reflective of its Soviet past. In Yerevan, you will have an opportunity to visit the famous Ararat Brandy Factory for a tour and tasting. The company s signature brandy is reserved for special occasions all over the post-soviet Union. The trip to Yerevan will include a trip just outside of town to a restaurant, famous among the locals for music, dancing, and of course, great food. Don t forget to try the trout, an Armenian specialty. Ancient Monasteries, Temples, and Cathedrals While in Armenia, you will visit the breathtaking Geghard Monastery, founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator amongst the cliffs and canyons of the Azat River Gorge. The current structures were built in 1215, following the destruction of the original site by Arabs in the 9th Century. This same excursion will include a visit to the nearby Temple of Garni, a classical Hellenistic structure. 16 Turkey With the border crossing at Sarpi only 20 minutes from Batumi, it would be a shame not to check out Turkey. They may be neighbors, but Georgia and Turkey are entirely different in terms of culture, language, architecture, religion, and food. Trabzon Tour Your main destination on this excursion is Trabzon, the historical port city founded as a Greek colony in 756 BC. In centuries past, Trabzon was the regional hub of a booming slave trade. This excursion will take you to the site of the former Trabzon slave market. While in Trabzon, you will have time for free exploration of the city. Don t forget to try the local cuisine which is no less delicious that its Georgian counterpart. Sumela Monastery Only a short drive from Trabzon is the Sumela Monastery, carved into a sheer cliff face. One can t help but feel they are in an Indiana Jones film as they approach the entrance to the Monastery. 17 River Kebab Party Gonio Fortress Excursion This day trip to the local Adjarian mountains is a fun filled day of swimming, sun, and Georgian BBQ ( shashlik for you Russian speakers). The scenery, food, and company make this one of the best excursions of the summer! 19 Russian Conversational Practice (Peer-coaching) Russian Singing Club We offer all of our students personal conversational partners to become their guides, coaches and friends. Your partners will fine tune your spoken Russian, helping you to make it natural, idiomatic, and free-flowing. Local university students or people of similar interests with you will introduce you to their circle of friends and invite you to the local social life. This is where you will inevitably interact with your peers, speaking genuinely and freely with them. Your new friends who will be there for you in the best traditions of companionship and hospitality. All levels To live the language as a more personal and culturally fulfilling experience is to be able to use it in all of its manifestations. We all like music and have probably noticed that the songs we learn for some reason stick with us for a very long time. Singing offers a way to fast-track fluency: You learn vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural contexts through song. Many of our teachers are also great musicians, so they can explain the cultural background behind the song, piquing your curiosity about peculiar aspects of local traditions and practices. Really, learning songs is a highly-effective and engaging exercise with lasting results! And we welcome students to bring their own instruments to make it even more fun and productive. All levels Guest Speaker Presentations Russian-speaking Club To bring your language challenge to a higher level of the intellectual discourse we set up venues for the lecturers and experts from various occupational and academic backgrounds to unveil their take on the regional history, culture, religion, politics and arts. It s a good time to satiate your curiosity, make new discoveries, ask questions and find the missing puzzle bits to complete your picture of local life in all of its most essential colors and perspectives. You will be able to draw your conclusions and well grounded opinions about the make of life in the given geographical region based on the thorough analysis of our weekly guest speaker presentations on one hand and your personal experiences on the other. This complimentary weekly event will focus on helping the student access a wider turf exploring the intrinsic value of perhaps once seemed rather trivial expressions and vocabulary. Using them in conversations among the peer-coaches or their friends or in situations where you have to speak Russian will help you be more sociable and likable among the local people boosting your confidence, fluency and rapport. 23 Food and Restaurants Cafe Gardens Cafe Gardens is located just a 10 minute walk down the street from the Batumi Maritime Academy. With its stunning architecture, it is located alongside the 26 May Park and contains an assortment of affordable meals. Cafe Gardens is also known for having the best burgers in Batumi. The Piazza (The Old Town) The Old Town is a modest central location with numerous restaurants and cafes featuring a wide (though closed in) area made out of stone with a stage for live performers. The Old Town features shops for souvenirs, hotels, and bars, though one should be cautious amongst prices in this area as it is often seen as a tourist-hub. Located on 30, Tavdadebuli Street. Tip: The bars and restaurants located on the second floor are known as being a fraction of the price of some of the ones in the main area. Try it out, if you re interested in a live music setting, that has a large area for many people. Finding German, French, English and European Cuisine Clouds This upscale restaurant stands out as one of Batumi s higher-end European restaurants featuring anything from Swedish meatballs to Italian pastas. The views from its glass walls offer glimpses of Miracle park, Seaside boulevard, and the Black Sea itself. Seating available for 50 persons and a VIP room for 10. DJ s often play on weekends with live bands playing late into the night. Located on the 38th floor of the Radisson Blu on Ninoshvili 1. Rennes (French Cuisine) This new restaurant offers a very relaxing European vibe; a mix between a classic interior and lounge style seating. The menu has many French delicacies, pastas, and salads. Be sure to try their legendary Rennes Salad, a mouthwatering mixture of pork, mushrooms, vegetables and a blend of sauces and sesame. Of course, it has many French desserts (the chocolate cake, is a must) and a generous variety of whiskey and wines. The cafe features live music daily. Getting there: On the corner of K. Gamsakhurdia 6 and Rustaveli Avenue (just a 10 minute walk from Batumi State Maritime Academy). Munich (German Cuisine) Introduced to Batumi in 2013, this German pub has a nicely designed interior with Bavarian artwork to welcome you into it s German theme. It enjoys a nice tone of softly played music in the backround. There is a great selection of fish, bratwurst, knuckle, and you can even order an entire pig. German beers come plentifully; Paulaner, Bitburger, Weihenstephan and a beer garden terrace. The television broadcasts football games and other events. Munchen (Hofbrau on Kutaisi street) is known for it s delicious German home-brew. Located on Kutaisi / Kusova 8/5 Grab and Go! (Easy Fast Food) A very small restaurant which does not offer any seating. Serves tasty pitas for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Delivery is available by phone, (+995) (11am- 11pm). 24 Food and Restaurants Mimino Mazniashvili 27, tel , Recently opened in 2013, this Soviet-comedy inspired restaurant is located among the many restaurants of Piazza complex. It features both a modern and simple design, with an open kitchen to top off the experience. Be sure to try its delicious Sulguni cheese rolls with cottage cheese and mint, or the mouth-watering chicken in blackberry sauce. Outside seating provides customers a great experience as live music plays in the Piazza Square every evening. Kozachok This small restaurant features Ukrainian styled in addition to it s design. All meals are meticulously prepared in a traditional way. While waiting time can be lengthly, the meals are meticulously prepared in the traditions of Ukrainian cuisine. Besides its delicious menu, the place is famous for it s Kiev cutlet and Uha fish soup. You can find it on Rustaveli Av Gold Fish Cafe & Restaurant The Gold Fish Cafe is known for its beautiful views overlooking the Black Sea. If you re lucky, you may even see dolphins in the distance. It prides itself as a more upscale, though affordable option for tourists and locals in Batumi. European and Georgian dishes are offered with some of the freshest ingredients and seafood freshly caught from the sea. Enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the Black Sea and the greater Bay of Batumi in this quiet location. Gold Fish features a two-story design with indoor and outdoor seating. 25 Internet, Phones, Post Services in Batumi Post Georgian post is known to be expensive and slow. It is limited to postcards from post offices and they are often troublesome to find. Postal stamps can be purchased only at the post offices. Postcards to Europe will cost 4 Lari and for the USA 4.8 Lari. Post Service Center Located on Melashvili 4, tel. (+995) , Hours: 9am- 5pm, Saturday 9am-3pm. Closed on Sundays. Telephones Landline Batumi telephone codes are (+995) 422. To dial within the city, you only need the last six numbers of the phone numbers as listed in this document. If the number begins with 3 digits differently from 422 (e.g. 559), dial - then full 9 digits number. Mobile Phones & Internet Mobile Georgian SIM-cards can sometimes be found for free at the offices listed below. You'll have to show your passport to purchase one. Calling from a mobile to a fixed line phone, dial -, then 422, and the last 6 digits. Calling to other cell phones can be tricky. Sometimes you are better off including all 9 digits. Beeline Mobile Phone Network A simple Beeline Simcard will run you about 1.5 lari, and topping up your phone can be done simply by any streetside kiosk. Beeline is located 10 minute walk from Batumi Maritime Academy at Gorgiladze 40, Open 10am-7pm, Saturday, Sunday, 10am-5pm Geocell is located on K. 26 Groceries & Shopping in Batumi Groceries Willmart This local super market was opened in 1990 and is known for having an affordable range of goods and products. Located on Inasaridze Street, nearby McDonalds. Goodwill Super Market Possibly one of the best options for those who need access to a variety of groceries. The deli is a huge hit, as it prepares fresh meat each day and offers many meat options with quality cuts. Like any grocery store, it s possible to find most of your necessary food items conveniently in the center of the city. Located on Chavchavadze 3 in the center. Fish Market Batumi's Fish Market is perfect for anyone who loves seafood as it offers good, cheap and fresh caught fish. You can order and have your food cooked right next door to the stall in just a matter of minutes. You can buy your fish raw and have it cooked by the chef. One pan fried dish is 6 lari, while you can get a kilogram of troust for just 10 larii. They also have a selection of bread, beer, and vodka! Don't leave without trying its famed Barabulka! Getting there: Take Bus #10 from the city center towards Makhinajauri (where the train station is located) and exit at the stop after the Revenue Service. The market is located on the left side of the road and is open from 8am - 8pm. Clothing Brend Hausi /Brand House This outlet styled store offers loads of cheap shoes, clothing, and accessories for very low prices. Brand named polos may run you about $17 and a pair of shoes can be found for as low as $25. Getting there: just a five minute walk from Batumi State Maritime Academy. Take a left out of the Academy and another left on the corner and turn right on Gorgiladze Street. Another Brand House is located on Rustaveli street just a block away from the May Park. Batumi Shopping Mall Batumi Shopping Center is located alongside Alexandre Kazbegi Street, about a 10 minute walk from the Batumi Lake by the Delfinarium. Books in Batumi, Abashidze Av. 60 Modern bookstore with a large selection of Georgian books and several others in English. Coffee and tea are served outdoors on its terrace and you can even rent a book while you are there! Contains lots of postcards for the traveling tourists. Books can be found both in Russian and English language. Souvenirs Georgia House, Gorgasali. This Souvenir shop offers distinctly Georgian souvenirs alongside Piazza Square. It offers a wide selection of goods to choose from, in addition to some specially packaged wines. 26

27 Social Venues & Nightlife Bars and Nightlife Black Buddha While Batumi s nightlife is quite small, Black Buddha sits on the first level of the President Palace Hotel with black and gold decor featuring a statue of Buddha. It is one of the only known places to get sushi in Batumi, in addition to sandwiches and salads. Chill-out music plays in the backround, though there are no live bands that frequent the venue. Located at Baratashvili 17, tel. Vinyl Another small bar/cafe, Vinyl prides itself as a cozy and charming venue decorated with painted vinyl discs. As a popular spot for expats and younger Georgians, it s a great place to enjoy a few pints or shots. While not very large, it has a consistent following among locals and expats. Located at Dumbadze 12/14 Art-Boulevard This modern cafe seats up to 150, while boasting an attractive design featuring lots of painted glass and metal. In the evening hours it turns into a nightclub, while boasting an international menu with varieties of BBQ and seafood dishes. Its well stocked bar is said to favor a generous selection of rum, while also being one of the prime spots during the high season among tourists. Known for its calm nature, its music gradually builds into the late Batumi nights. Located on 26 Maisi 2. Privet iz Batumi This cozy cafe is themed to a Colonial Russian vibe within Batumi that is popular among locals just as much as tourists as it features picturesque outdoor seating and relaxation. Nearby hills and mountains help contribute to the relaxing evening temperatures.
