Meet your Journey Manager and fellow guests, and board you flights to Bucharest, Romania. Overnight flight Day 2 Bucharest to Snagov Bucharest, Romania s capital and largest city, has an interesting heritage of mixed cultures, influenced by the ancient Romanian aristocracy educated in France, the German King Carol I, and the communist society. After arriving at the Bucharest airport, we meet our friendly local guide and make our way to our accommodation in the nearby village of Snagov. An oasis of calm and relaxation, Gradina Vlahiia (the Vlahiya Garden) is a fairy tale place, an authentic Romanian village in miniature. This evening, join your fellow guests for a casual welcome dinner in the complex s restaurant that features fresh produce from the courtyard in delicious traditional and international dishes. (L,D) Overnight Snagov, Gradina Vlahiia, 2 nights Day 3 Romanian Countryside This morning, explore the quaint and picturesque Gradina Vlahiia complex which includes the Museum of the Icons, the Peasant s Museum, and even a fully functional local farm. Learn about rural Romanian life on a detailed tour of the lovely complex. We then travel to Mogosoaia Palace to admire its traditional Brancoveanu-style architecture, explore its indoor park, and enjoy lunch in the luxurious palace restaurant. Built in 1702, this stunning palace has become one of Romania s most valuable architectural and cultural heritage buildings. Return to Bucharest for a special Romanian evening with dinner in a serene natural setting, Caru cu Bere. This legendary restaurant is one of the oldest pubs in the city, known for its wall frescos, stained glass windows, and carved beams. Day 4 Sinaia Today, we continue on the road to Romania s North, through the very scenic Valley of Princes to visit the 19 th -century Peles Castle, widely considered one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. Take in the spectacular views and tour its magnificent collections of art, stained glass, and weapons before we continue to Azuga to see the historical cellars of the Prahova Valley. At Rhein-Azuga Wine Cellar (one of the oldest in Romania), learn the traditional method of producing sparkling wine, and enjoy a selection of five types of champagne followed by a delicious lunch. Admire the stunning mountain vistas and relax on a beautiful drive to our enchanting hotel in Poiana Brasov. After settling in to your room, dinner is served at a famous hunting restaurant in the resort. Overnight Poiana Brasov, Teleferic Grand Hotel, 2 nights Day 5 Transylvania: Bran & Brasov Defined by rugged mountains cloaked in forested valleys and dotted by Gothic castles, Transylvania is arguably Romania s most famous and picturesque region. We begin the day with a road trip to the village of Bran to the famous Dracula Castle, which earned this designation because of its medieval look and past owner, Count Vlad the Impaler. Built between 1377 and 1382, this grand castle sits on a 60-metre rock and was once used as a royal residence. After admiring the stunning views and hearing the legendary tales, visit one of the main cities in Transylvania, Brasov, to wander its medieval city centre and marvel at the imposing Gothic architecture of the Black Church. 3 Day 6 Nature Reserve Begin the day with a visit to the "Libearty Zarnesti" nature reserve and bear sanctuary, which is located at the foot of the Carpathians and is home to more than 70 bears that have been saved from abusive captivity. Learn about this amazing rescue project and see the bears enjoying life in the forested sanctuary of their natural habitat. Following lunch, we return to Bucharest and check in to our hotel. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with the passengers of the Amadeus Star, which we will board tomorrow. Overnight Bucharest, InterContinental Bucharest, 1 night Day 7 Bucharest After breakfast, explore the capital city of Bucharest, fondly known as the Paris of the East, on a panoramic tour along the city s magnificent boulevards, lined with stunning buildings. See such highlights as the Opera House, the Triumph Arch (modelled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris), and the Main Square. Marvel at the impressive Palace of Parliament, previously known as the People s House, which is the second-largest building in the world (after the Washington Pentagon) and is unparalleled in its grandeur. Enjoy lunch at a Romanian restaurant before a short walking tour through the city centre s newly designed pedestrian area. Meander along the café-lined Strada Lipscani and through the ancient streets in Bucharest s Old Town, see the majestic National Museum of Romania and the lavish CEC Palace, and visit the 17 th -century Romanian Orthodox Stavropoleos Monastery and Church, one of the oldest in the city. Following a full day of discovery, depart for the port city of Fetesti, and board the Amadeus Star, your home for the next nine days. This evening, enjoy a welcome cocktail, followed by a specially-prepared welcome dinner. Overnight Amadeus Star, 9 nights Day 8 Danube Delta The Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the edge of the Black Sea, is a vital sanctuary for around 300 different bird species. This morning, board a small delta safari boat for an intimate exploration of this incredible biosphere reserve, and travel through the narrow channels to witness the pelican colony at Sahalin lagoon. With a rich supply of fish in the brackish waters of the lagoon, this is the largest nesting area for pelicans in the delta. Pass by one of the oldest fish processing centres in the Danube Delta before a visit to the picturesque fishermen s village of Sfîntu Gheorghe (St. George) which has been heavily influenced by both Romanian and Ukrainian traditions and cultures. Dine on fresh fish and homemade plum schnapps at a local restaurant before returning to the Amadeus Star. Day 9 Hirsova & Constanta After a leisurely morning visit to the small Romanian town of Hirsova, step on the golden sandy beaches of the Black Sea for a guided tour of Constanta, Romania s chief port city, this afternoon. This ancient metropolis by the sea, founded by Greek colonists during the 6 th century BC, is considered Romania s longest continually inhabited city. A walk into the city s Old Town features sights of its prominent and historic buildings including the Great Mosque, the Casino Constanta, and Genovese Lighthouse. 4 Day 10 Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria Pay a short visit this morning to Giurgiu before navigating to Ruse, where we begin our day excursion towards Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria s oldest town, on a comfortable coach. Picturesquely located on the steep banks of the river Yantra at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, the houses of this medieval city were built on narrow terraces along the steep, rocky slopes. Upon arrival, pass by the fortress Zarewez, visit the 13 th -century church of St. Peter and Paul, and enjoy some free time to explore the arts and crafts of local artisans. Before returning to the boat, we continue to the nearby small town of Arbanassi, famous for its ornately painted churches, stopping at a typical Bulgarian restaurant along the way. We meet up with the Amadeus Star in Svishtov this afternoon. Day 11 Iron Gates Enjoy a relaxing and memorable day on board as we cruise along the scenic Danube and pass through the world-famous Iron Gates. Day 12 Belgrade, Serbia Belgrade, one of the oldest cities in Europe and the capital of Serbia, lies at the junction of the Danube and the Sava. Embark on a morning city tour and enjoy the impressive panoramic views over the river at the Kalemegdan Fortress. See such highlights as the National Museum, Terazije Square, and the Serbian parliament, and marvel at the massive St. Sava Church, the largest Orthodox church in the world. After a refreshment break at the Hotel Majestic, spend some free time exploring the shops and art galleries in the city s pedestrian area. This afternoon is at your leisure to explore this unique city at your own pace. Day 13 Mohács & Kalocsa, Hungary Enjoy a leisurely morning of river cruising and take in the beauty of the Danube. After departing the tiny harbour town of Mohács following lunch, we drive into the Hungarian Puszta, or Great Hungarian Plain. View the passing scenery dotted with villages and farmland as our guide discusses present day life in Hungary. Stop to see local handicrafts along with a demonstration of local dance before visiting the House of Paprika and learning about this important Hungarian specialty. Our exploration of the Puszta continues with a visit to a traditional Hungarian ranch, where we enjoy a glass of local wine and witness the fantastic relationship between Hungarian Magyars and their horses during an equestrian show. We rejoin the boat late this afternoon in Kalocsa. Day 14 Budapest Budapest, the Queen of the Danube, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The Danube flows through the heart of the city, dividing it into two parts: Buda on the western banks and Pest on the eastern. First, explore Pest, including its Great Market Hall with outstanding gourmet shops and stalls, the splendid Hungarian State Opera in Neo-Renaissance style, and the famous Heroes Square. Continue across one of the seven bridges into Buda, and take in the unforgettable view from Castle Hill before stopping at St. Matthew s Church and the famous Fisherman s Bastion. After lunch, visit the Royal Palace of Gödöllö, the largest complex of Baroque buildings in Hungary, and see the spectacular ballroom with its beautiful marble stucco details. This evening, enjoy a traditional Hungarian folklore show on board, put on by local performers, followed by an evening cruise down the Danube to see the beautifully illuminated skyline of Budapest by night. 5 Day 15 Bratislava, Slovakia A full morning of sailing brings us to Bratislava, the capital of the young Slovakian Republic, by midafternoon. Our excursion passes St. Martin s Cathedral and the Grassalkovich Palace before continuing up the hill to admire stunning, panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. Afterwards, a guided walking tour leads us through the gorgeous Old Town to such sites as the Primatial Palace, the Academia Istropolitana, the Opera House, and Maximilian Fountain. Late this afternoon, we return to the boat and prepare for the Captain s Gala Dinner. Day 16 Vienna, Austria With an artistic and intellectual legacy shaped in part by former residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud, Vienna is a magical city and capital of Austria. After arriving into Vienna this morning, we say goodbye to our lovely staff and bid farewell to the Amadeus Star. Today, we embark on a panoramic city tour and see Vienna s top sights as we drive along the grand Ring Boulevard and stroll through the beautiful heart of this historic city. Dine at a local restaurant before checking into our hotel and enjoying an afternoon at leisure to rest or explore. Following dinner at the hotel, experience one of Vienna s greatest performances: a classical music concert by the Vienna Mozart Orchestra at the Golden Hall in Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. This is sure to be a night of magic you won t soon forget! Overnight Vienna, Palais Hansen Kempinski, 2 nights Day 17 Schönbrunn Palace Our final full day in Vienna begins with a morning visit to the famous Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs built at the beginning of the 18 th century. Following lunch at a local restaurant, we visit the Museum of Fine Arts and discover the Kunstkammer Wien, a unique collection of twenty newly-installed galleries that invites us to experience a world of beauty and wit, curiosities and wonder. In the evening, join your fellow travellers one last time and enjoy a farewell dinner at a typical Viennese Heurigen, which are famous for their comfortable atmosphere and fine Viennese wines. Day 18 Home This morning, we say auf wiedersehen to our new friends and make our way to the airport for our flights home. Guests arriving at the Toronto airport are greeted and assisted to their private car home.
