2 T H E j o u R n e y b e g i n s W E L C O M E T O a n c h o r a g e, a l a s k a It is my pleasure to personally invite you to celebrate Ducks Unlimited s 70th Anniversary at our Annual Convention in Anchorage, Alaska, from May 23 27, We have a wonderful agenda planned for the convention. In addition to the educational and inspirational meetings, we have a full menu of exciting parties, tours and side trips for this once-ina-lifetime trip to Alaska. The work of our staff, in cooperation with the Alaska host committee, ensures an unforgettable event. Convention is a special time to recognize the achievements of Ducks Unlimited, especially those related to the Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign; but no celebration of organizational success would be complete without honoring the people behind those achievements. Once again, the General Business Sessions and Presidents Luncheon will provide a venue to pay tribute to these special leaders. The program schedule included in this brochure will help you plan your time while at convention, but there are a few details that should be completed now to ensure your trip s success. Registration: Please take a few minutes to complete and return the Convention Registration Form, along with your check or credit card information. You can also register online with us at Remember, we have a special registration fee for children ages 14 and younger. Banquet Reservations: Please complete the Banquet Form and return it with your registration materials. Hotel Accommodations: The Hotel Reservation Form should be completed and mailed or faxed to the hotel you choose. You may also reserve your accommodations via the hotel Web site listed on the form. Tour Reservations: Now is the time to make your plans for the special side trips and tours available before, during and after convention. During the coming weeks, you will receive additional information. In the meantime, I urge you to finalize your plans and help us celebrate DU s 70th birthday in Anchorage! See you there! Jim Hulbert, President

3 W E L C O M E T O a l a s k a T H I S I S t h e g r e at l a n d When it comes to Alaska, everything points north. From the Northern Lights, to the great northern migration of waterfowl. Point your compass to America s most northern state and joins us for Ducks Unlimited s 70th Anniversary National Convention. ALYESKA in the language of the early Aleuts means THE GREAT LAND. And those who came later, lured north by a haunting inner spirit, have always been hard-pressed to come up with a better way to describe Alaska, our 49th state. The theme for Ducks Unlimited s 2007 convention is The Journey Begins. In this case, it really is more than just a metaphor for a conservation message. While the actual convention takes place in Anchorage, the various tour packages that Ducks Unlimited has put together will afford the opportunity to explore well beyond the city itself. Alaska is full of outdoor adventures, from the mild to the wild. Choose from wildlife viewing, sea kayaking, dog sledding and guided glacier hikes. Relax aboard a cruise, pan for gold, or cast a line for And, believe it or not, Alaska boasts the eastern, western and northern-most points in the U.S. This Great Land spreads out to the horizon with more than half a million square miles of breathtaking views and natural wonders that defy description. A Brief History: From Folly to Fortune When, on March 30, 1867, then Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated a deal for the United States to buy Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million or 2 cents an acre, many Americans called the purchase Seward s Folly, or Seward s Icebox, thinking Alaska a snowy, icy wasteland. Of course, that was before treasures of gold, oil and wilderness adventures were discovered in the state. Today, Alaska s natural appeal draws millions of tourists to enjoy its rich traditions and native history, and thankfully, they are all well preserved. From the earliest inhabitants who crossed over the Bering Land Bridge from Asia approximately 20,000 years ago, the cultures and villages of Alaska s natives remain icons of the state s rich heritage. Visitors can experience the state s unique native Alaska s world famous King salmon.
