2 MV Aegean Odyssey T he MV Aegean Odyssey is a premium class ship that was rebuilt to cater for cruising in the coastal waters of the central and southern Mediterranean. Originally a mid-size vessel carrying up to 570 passengers, the new configuration includes generously sized suites, junior suites, staterooms and cabins with and without balconies, which means she now accommodates an average of 350 guests. The vessel provides the best features of a mid-size ship such as passenger space, a choice of restaurants and stability in inclement weather. She also has the personal service and intimate surroundings of a small ship. Your Suite/Stateroom/Cabin All suites, staterooms and cabins are en suite and feature a bath and/or shower, flat screen TV, safe, hair dryer and are fully air-conditioned. Guests in Balcony Class (categories A to D) will also enjoy: a stateroom or suite with balcony, a welcome bottle of Champagne, a fridge stocked with soft drinks, complimentary bottled water, robe and slippers, Molton Brown bathroom amenities and priority sightseeing boarding. The sizes, layout and bed configuration will vary within a category. Beds may be fixed double (queen size), fixed separate twin beds or twin beds that can be converted into a double bed. All outside staterooms and cabins have windows except Category J most of which have portholes. Your Space On board you will find two restaurants; the Marco Polo Restaurant on the Marco Polo Deck and the Terrace Café on the Promenade Deck which has a beautiful outdoor seating area so passengers can enjoy dining al fresco in warm weather. There are four bars on board and three lounges so there will always be space for relaxation and quiet when desired, as well as ample room for socialising with new found friends. There is also a lecture theatre, a library, shop and internet centre. The on-board library features an extensive range of volumes covering classical history, literature, art, architecture and philosophy. To attend to the body as well as the mind, you can relax on the sweeping sun decks and cool off in the outdoor pool. There is also a fully-equipped gym with lockers and showers, sauna, massage and beauty treatment rooms and early morning yoga. The hairdressers and beauty centre are located on the Belvedere Deck adjacent to the reception area. Dining The MV Aegean Odyssey offers numerous dining spaces and a varied, sumptuous cuisine. As well as being one of the world s most historically interesting and naturally beautiful destinations, Southeast Asia is home to an unsurpassed culinary tradition. The gastronomic culture of using the very best fresh local ingredients cooked in a simple but delicious and healthy style is the inspiration for the restaurants aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey. The most elegant of the ship s restaurants, the Marco Polo has a casual country-club ambience and Oriental and Mediterranean inspired food. At lunch, you can choose from a variety of starters, three dishes of the day and a choice of desserts, fruit and cheese. The Terrace Cafe With a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, sophisticated interior design and cooking on the open grill, the Terrace Café replicates the charm and ambience of a trattoria. As well as the grill, there is a large buffet. The day starts in the Terrace Café with breakfast where you can enjoy a healthy combination of yogurt, fruit and muesli or indulge in eggs, bacon or an omelette. Every afternoon you will find a selection of freshly-prepared sandwiches, cakes and scones served in the Terrace Café or the Charleston Lounge. In the evenings, Outside at the Terrace recreates the informal yet sophisticated atmosphere of a European bistro. Equal care has been given to the selection of included wines served at Outside at the Terrace; these will be served at your table by our helpful waiting staff. 4 Burma & the Malay Peninsula A voyage from Colombo to Singapore including the ancient wonders of Myanmar 5 th to 26 th February 2016 This is Burma, and it will quite unlike any land you know about, wrote Rudyard Kipling in 1889 and his observation still rings true today. This voyage will take you into the heart of this beautiful and deeply spiritual country. Your arrival is fittingly spectacular as the size of the MV Aegean Odyssey allows us to sail up the Yangon River to berth in the port of Yangon (Rangoon). Before we reach Burma, we enjoy a two night-stay in Colombo from where we will discover some of Sri Lanka s many wonders before embarking the MV Aegean Odyssey and sailing to Chennai and Port Blair before reaching Yangon where we will moor for two nights allowing time to explore. Upon leaving Burma we sail to Phuket where you can travel to the unique Phi Phi Islands and then on to Malaysia, rich in colonial history. GUEST SPEAKER Denise Heywood Denise Heywood is a lecturer, author, journalist and photographer. She worked in Cambodia as a journalist for three years, and has also worked in France and America. Now based in London, she is a lecturer for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies (NADFAS), for the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) on their post-graduate Asian Art Course and for Madingley Hall (University of Cambridge). She has lectured all over Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe for organisations such as The British Museum, The Art Fund, The Royal Society for Asian Affairs, Asia House, The National Trust, The Wallace Collection, Farnham Castle Centre for International Briefing, Asian Civilisations Museum Singapore and universities, museums, colleges, schools, art institutions, literary societies and travel organisations including the Royal Geographical Society. She has written a book on the Buddhist temples of Laos, Ancient Luang Prabang, and her latest one is on Cambodian dance, Cambodian Dance Celebration of the Gods, with a foreword by Princess Buppha Devi, daughter of King Sihanouk. She has led art tours to Southeast Asia and is a member of The Association of Southeast Asian Studies in the United Kingdom, Asia House, The Anglo-Indonesian Society, The Cambodian Society in the United Kingdom and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. INDIA Chennai SRI LANKA Colombo Galle BAY OF BENGAL and on the opposite side of the picturesque valley there will be a guided tour of the monumental Temple of the Tooth where the sacred relic is enshrined. During the return drive from this ancient kingdom, we will make a stop at a Spice Garden and learn about Sri Lanka s ayurvedic tradition before returning to the vessel after what will be a long but rewarding day. Alternatively, a two and a half hour drive through the lovely Sri Lankan countryside brings us to Pinnawela which was established by the Department of Wildlife Conservation to protect unweaned baby elephants found wandering in the forests. Enjoy a buffet lunch at the Pinnalanda Restaurant in a picturesque location overlooking the river and this afternoon, see the elephants from closer-up, and maybe watch some of the older or smaller elephants being fed. Day 4 Colombo. This morning we will experience the astonishing blend of modern and exotic in Sri Lanka s commercial capital, a city quite unlike any other. During the tour you will drive past Dutch and British colonial-era architecture, including the Wolvendhal Church and the old Town Hall, interspersed with Hindu temples, the neoclassical National Museum and the Pettah Bazaar. Formerly known as Madras, Chennai was founded by the British East India Company in 1639 and today is India s fourth largest city. We will drive along the Marina, an elegant promenade, to the old Indian neighbourhood of Mylapore, one of Chennai s most characterful districts that pre-dates colonial Madras by several hundred years. Our first stop is the San Thome Basilica built in 1504 and rebuilt in neo-gothic style in This Roman Catholic Church is said to house remains of St Thomas the Apostle who is said to have visited and died in the city. With its rainbowcoloured gopuram (gateway tower), pillared pavilions and huge water tank, Kapileshwara Mylapore is an impressive example of a Tamil Nadu temple. It is dedicated to the most popular local deity, Lord Shiva and constructed in Dravidian style. After these two holy sites it is on to a more secular treat at the Government Museum which is housed across several British-built buildings known as the Pantheon Complex. Lastly we visit Fort St George. Ko Phi Phi The Itinerary Day 1 London to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Fly by scheduled flight. Day 2 Colombo. Arrive and transfer to the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel for a two-night stay. Day 3 Colombo. There is a choice of excursions today to either Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth or to Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of unusual beauty and the location of the temple containing a tooth of Buddha. The scenic threehour drive takes us out of Colombo and up into Sri Lanka s stunning hill country. One of the day s highlights is a stop at Peradeniya to walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens. Lunch will be served in a colonial hotel overlooking the Kandy Lake Day 5 Galle. Galle is a colourful town that is shrouded in the scent of spices and littered with decaying Dutch-colonial buildings, but most of all a city of trade and art, two preoccupations which will be evident during our visit to the Fort which was built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later modified by the Dutch during the 17th century. We will also visit the National Maritime Museum. Day 6 At sea. Days 8 & 9 At sea. Day 10 Port Blair. Established by the British as a penal colony in 4

5 Elephant orphanage, Sri Lanka Yangon Temple of the Tooth,Kandy 1789, today Port Blair is the largest town on the Andaman Islands. We will explore the small town visiting the Naval Marine Museum with its displays of tribal art, marine life and archaeology. Next, visit the Anthropological Museum which illustrates the lives of the aboriginal tribes with miniature models of the tools used by them, their dresses and photographs of their life style. Day 11 At sea. Days 12 to 14 Yangon, Burma. Our visit to Myanmar s former capital, previously called Rangoon, will include a guided tour of the 2600-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the world s most spectacular monuments. This sacred Buddhist shrine contains eight strands of Gautama Buddha s hair. Prepare for an overload of images: gold domed stupas, one with a 76-carat diamond atop its spire, prayerful pilgrims, multi-coloured flags and flower offerings, and the majesty of this sacred site, described by Kipling as a golden mystery... a beautiful winking wonder. Admire the gorgeous colonial architecture of Rangoon, circa-1920, passing the historic Strand Hotel, the bookstalls of Pansodan Street and the Sule Pagoda set in the centre of a traffic roundabout. You will also have the chance to shop for Burmese handicrafts at the famous Bogyoke Aung San Market, formerly known as Scott s Market. During our time in Burma, we will also head out of Yangon for a day of insights into Burmese life in. En route to Bago we will stop at the Thamanay Buddhist Seminary, a charming monastery and teaching centre for hundreds of monks from neighbouring regions. Visit the 8th-century Shwemawdaw, or Great Gold God Pagoda, whose towering golden spire makes it the country s tallest. Lunch served in a local restaurant will give you the opportunity to try typical Burmese dishes. Continue sightseeing in the afternoon with a visit to the temple of the remarkable 180-foot long reclining Shwethalyaung Buddha, built by King Migadippa in 994. Day 15 At sea. Day 16 Phuket, Thailand. With soaring cliffs, powdery sands and crystal-clear waters, it s no wonder Thailand declared the Phi Phi Islands a National Park. Don your swimsuit, hop aboard a local speedboat and head for these tropical treasures of the Andaman Sea. Your adventure starts early with a transfer from the ship to Phuket Marina. From here, it s about an hour by water to Phi Phi Le, where we will visit stunningly beautiful Maya Bay, seen in the film The Beach. Swim or snorkel with colourful fish. Explore fjord-like Pileh Cove with its steep limestone walls. See the Viking Cave, a source of birds nests for the famous Asian soup. Inside, rock carvings from 3,000-4,000 years old are thought to resemble Scandinavian longboats. Day 17 Penang, Malaysia. Penang was part of the Malay sultanate until 1786, when Captain Francis Light built a fort at the site of present-day Georgetown and managed to get the island ceded to the British East India Company. Day 18 Malacca, Malaysia. Malacca is a unique experience and its rich historical background earned it a World Heritage Site designation in July Malacca was the capital of the Malacca Sultanate and the centre of the Malay world in the 15th and 16th centuries and the city s rich history will come to life as we tour the main colonial sites including the ruined Portuguese fort A Famosa, St Paul s Church that overlooks the Malacca Strait and Dutch Square. Centuries of invaders, traders and rulers have shaped the culture and architecture of the Indian state of Kerala s premier city. 15th and 16th-century palaces, mosques, churches, and even an active synagogue mark the myriad periods in Cochin s history. Our sightseeing begins with a drive to Fort Cochin, located in the historic centre, and visit the oldest European church in India, St Francis Church, where the explorer Vasco da Gama was once buried. Just outside the church, see the bamboo and teak poles Singapore 6

7 Cochin Taj Mahal, Agra of the city s often photographed Chinese fishing nets. Visit the charming Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in 1555, renovated by the Dutch in 1663 and today flanked by shrines to Krishna and Shiva. Day 14 Mangalore. Discover the tileroofs, cashew gardens, Hindu shrines and Catholic churches of Mangalore where Indian and Portuguese heritages intertwine. Fronted by the Arabian Sea and backed by the Western Ghat mountains, the city takes its name from the goddess Mangaladevi. Visit a local cashew nut processing plant and learn about this popular nut, brought here in the 16th-century by the Portuguese. Continue to the beautiful Hindu temple dedicated to Gokarnath, another name for Shiva. We visit St Aloysius Chapel where you will see why it is so often compared to the Sistine Chapel. Day 15 Marmagao. Some of India s most architecturally beautiful places can be found in Old Goa. This walled historic precinct contains an archaeological reserve of churches that were influential in spreading Manueline, Mannerist and Baroque art to Asia in the 16th to 18th centuries. Designed to awe the locals into conversion, these magnificent churches testify to the wealth of Goa when it was the capital of the Eastern Portuguese Empire. Visit St Cajetan Church, modelled on St Peter s in Rome, with its hidden crypt where in 1992 the bodies of former Portuguese governors were found in lead coffins waiting to be sent back to Lisbon. Next, we visit the 16thcentury Basilica of Bom Jesus, where St Francis Xavier, Goa s patron saint, is entombed in a marble mausoleum. Day 16 Mumbai. Immerse yourself in the swirling contrasts of India s economic powerhouse, home to nearly 20 million people, global corporations and the Bollywood film industry. View the colonial heritage as you drive from the pier past such Victorian Gothic Revival landmarks as Rajabhai Clock Tower, Mumbai University, High Court, Crawford Market and the marvellous Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Glimpse political India when you visit the charming residence of Mahatma Gandhi, Mani Bhawan, a museum to the leader s life and work. Capture the flavour of spiritual India at the ISKON Krishna Temple and then ascend Malabar Hill to the Hanging Gardens for panoramas of the entire city. Continue past the Parsi Tower of Silence to explore India s ancient heritage at the Prince of Wales Museum with its lovely gardens. Day 17 Mumbai to Jaipur. Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for the scheduled flight to Jaipur. On arrival transfer to your hotel. Day 18 Jaipur. We start this full day of sightseeing with a guided tour of Jaipur s opulent City Palace where you can marvel at the embroidered costumes of a Maharani. Next, visit Jai Singh s Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site also known as Jantar Mantar. Built by the 17th-century founder of Jaipur, the innovative design and instrumentation gives a glimpse into the court life of this soldier-astronomer-architect prince. Also enjoy a photo stop at the Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds, where ladies watched the world from behind delicate honeycomb screens. Continue to the Aravalli Hills and ride a jeep to the Amber Fort. Day 19 Jaipur to Agra, India. Today we drive from Jaipur to Agra, visiting Fatehpur Sikri en route. Enter the City of Victory built in 1569 by Akbar the Great in gratitude for the birth of a male heir, then abandoned 14 years later when the water supply failed. Because the city was deserted for most of its existence, the buildings are well preserved without modification by later rulers and today this majestic ghost town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
