3 HARVARD STUDY LEADER Thomas Forrest Kelly PhD 73 is the Morton B. Knafel Professor of Music and head tutor for historical musicology. His main fields of interest are chant and performance practice. He received his AB from Chapel Hill and spent two years on a Fulbright in France studying musicology, chant, and organ, before earning his PhD from Harvard. He has taught at Wellesley, Smith, Amherst, and at Oberlin, where he directed the Historical Performance Program and served as acting dean of the Conservatory. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an honorary citizen of the city of Benevento, and a Chevalier de l Ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic. Kelly is the author of First Nights: Five Musical Premieres (Yale University Press, 2001), a lively recounting of the premieres of five of the world s most influential pieces of music: Handel s Messiah in Dublin in 1742; Berlioz s Fantastic Symphony and Stravinsky s Rite of Spring in Paris in 1830 and 1913 respectively; Beethoven s Ninth Symphony in Vienna in 1824; and Monteverdi s Orfeo in Mantua in Kelly is currently developing a free online course with HarvardX based on this book. 4 SCHEDULE BY DAY Middelburg, with its charming houses and 15th-century town hall, visit the Zeeuws Museum and enjoy its unique collection of 16th-century tapestries. In the afternoon cruise to Ghent, for a visit to the magnificent Cathedral of St. Bavo and viewing of its greatest treasure, the 15th-century Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (Ghent Altarpiece) by the Van Eyck brothers. Amsterdam Sunday, April 10 U.S. DEPARTURE Depart the U.S. on an overnight flight to Amsterdam. Monday, April 11 AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS Arrive in Amsterdam where an orientation tour introduces the city s fascinating 700-year old history. Relax at a local cafe before transferring to the AmaPrima for embarkation. This evening the captain hosts a welcome reception, followed by dinner. Tuesday, April 12 ROTTERDAM / DELFT, THE NETHERLANDS Dock in Rotterdam, largely rebuilt after World War II and famous for its cutting-edge architecture. A morning city tour takes you past buildings designed by Renzo Piano, Piet Blom, and Rem Koolhaas. Visit the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, with its extensive collection of Dutch and other European masterpieces. Alternatively, discover the windmills of Kinderdijk, 19 perfectly aligned windmills that comprise The Netherland s largest grouping. After lunch, travel to Delft, birthplace of Vermeer, with the afternoon at leisure to discover the vibrant market square, tree-lined canals, and gabled homes. Rejoin the ship in time for dinner. Wednesday, April 13 MIDDELBURG, THE NETHERLANDS / GHENT, BELGIUM Arrive this morning in Zeeland, a region of dikes and neatly kept farms that is mostly below sea level. Early risers may wish to enjoy a horsedrawn carriage ride through the quaint village of Veere. In Thursday, April 14 BRUGES, BELGIUM Today focus on Bruges, a medieval gem laced with canals and gardens. Visit the Cathedral of Our Lady, with its celebrated Madonna & Child by Michelangelo, and view the collections at the Hans Memling Museum, housed in the Hospice of St. John. Following lunch at Duc de Bourgogne, which overlooks the waterways, visit the Groeninge Museum and stroll in this enchanting town. In the evening, attend a special onboard concert of chamber music performed by one of Europe s exciting new quartets. 5 Friday, April 15 ANTWERP, BELGIUM Step ashore this morning to visit the 17th-century Rubens House and the cathedral, where the painter s famous Descent from the Cross is on display. You may also wish to see the Plantin-Moretus House, the former residence and workshop of a leading family of printers which has a lovely Renaissance garden. After lunch on board, enjoy a cruise through The Netherland s scenic countryside. use, Antwerp (top center) and Saturday, April 16 ARNHEM, THE NETHERLANDS From Arnhem, remembered for its World War II battles, drive into the Hoge Veluwe National Park, whose moors, forests, and open fields are often depicted in Van Gogh s drawings and paintings. Then discover the Kröller-Müller Museum, a treasure house of modern art with a sculpture park that art critic John Russell called still the best of its kind in the world. Celebrate a memorable voyage this evening at a farewell dinner hosted by the captain. Sunday, April 17 AMSTERDAM Be on deck this morning as we cruise into Amsterdam, past gabled houses and mansions. Board a canal boat for an architectural tour of the city, followed by a visit to the Rijksmuseum, the State Treasury of Dutch paintings, which reopened in 2013 after extensive renovations. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure, perhaps to visit the Van Gogh Museum or stroll to the Singel, site of a colorful floating flower market. Monday, April 18 AMSTERDAM / U.S. Disembark AmaPrima this morning and transfer to the airport for the flight to the U.S. OPTIONAL PRELUDE THE HAGUE April 8 to 11, 2016 Discover The Hague, seat of the Dutch government and residence of the Queen, during a two-night stay at the elegant Hotel Des Indes. On a walking tour, view the Parliament and other royal and governmental buildings. Visit the recently renovated Mauritshuis Museum, and tour the outstanding collection of modern art at the Gemeente Museum. See the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice, before continuing to the Gallery Prince William V, one of The Hague s hidden gems. Admire Panorama Mesdag, a vast circular canvas depicting the seaside resort of Scheveningen as it appeared in the 1880s. Keukenhof Gardens OPTIONAL POSTLUDE AMSTERDAM April 18 to 20, 2016 Enjoy a picnic lunch at the famed Keukenhof Gardens, where more than a million flowering bulbs create a vast carpet of color. A city walking tour passes by De Doelen, where Rembrandt is said to have painted the Night Watch, and continues to the Rembrandt House Museum, where the artist lived and worked from 1639 to Visit the Van Gogh Museum, which houses the world s largest collection of the artist s work, and view a wide range of art at the Stedelijk Museum. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. HEALTH ADVISORY This is an active program that involves extensive walking. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. Please note: AmaPrima does not have an elevator.
