THE SIGNAL RICHMOND YACHT CLUB September / October Gloriana, with Olympic flame burning, Olympic flag flying, and powered by a crew of Olympic oarsmen, passes RYC at 0923 on Friday 27 July the final day of the Olympic Torch Relay
RYC was the perfect location for a close-up view of the spectacular Olympic Torch flotilla en route from Hampton Court to Tower Bridge
The Olympic Torch Breakfast Twenty-nine members and their guests, a total of 74 people, came to our Olympic Torch Breakfast on 27 July including club members Maurice and Joyce who left their home in Kent at 0630 to arrive at RYC by 0800 but the early start was well worth it. We all enjoyed the glorious spectacle of Gloriana, rowed by a crew of Olympic oarsmen and accompanied by a flotilla of assorted boats as she carried the Olympic flame past RYC on her way from Hampton Court to Tower Bridge, the final leg of the Olympic Torch Relay. Clockwise from top left: Cadet member Reilly and friend at the ready Pam waving her good arm Ian Tyson, with bosun s call, prepared for the salute One of the many small boats in the flotilla Doug serving Buck s Fizz at the alfresco bar Some of the skiffs following Gloriana Many thanks to our photographers, Reg Jupp and Alexandra Strick (Lizanne s daughter) for some memorable images. You can see Alex s portfolio of Olympic Torch Breakfast pics at: A few weeks after the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the clubhouse was again looking resplendent, decked out in bunting and flags. This time, fortunately, it was pleasantly warm and the rain held off until after breakfast. As part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, along with many thousands of others around the country, we rang the three RYC bells as loudly as possible for three minutes from 0812, to signal the first day of the London Olympics. There was fresh orange juice and Buck s Fizz as guests arrived. Once Gloriana and the flotilla had passed, breakfast was served. Commodore Anne Perry, having broken 168 eggs earlier in the morning (at the crack of dawn), cooked up scrambled eggs with smoked salmon; Vice Commodore Pam Chart made dozens of bacon rolls and there were croissants and home-made preserves. After all the excitement, the delicious cooked breakfast was eagerly consumed. The morning was a highlight of summer Our thanks to all who made it possible especially Pam and her team in the galley.

Eel Pie Island! Pam and her helpers will prepare a buffet which will be free to members and just 5 for guests. Please phone Pam asap on xxxx xxx xxx or xxxxx xxx xxx if you d like to join us. Thoughts from the Foredeck The committee is delighted to report to those who don t read s, and many of the best people don t, that RYC has now entered the 21st Century. The club has a web site: which paints a picture of the club that I fear we may struggle to live up to! We will be developing the site over the next few months and are putting together a section on the history of the club. If you have any photos or memorabilia or stories of your boating experiences from yesteryear which could be included, we d be very pleased to see them. There s been lots going on at the club over the summer apart from the Jubilee festivities. Personally, I really enjoyed the ordered chaos which accompanied the Open House afternoon during Twickenham Week. I have never attended a cream teas afternoon before, and although we missed the presence of Morris Dancers this year many people made the journey to our remote corner of the island for Pam s scones and tea. I forget how many batches of scones Pam made. My principle memory is of laughter in the galley and of Reg s Ann winning the gold medal for high speed washing up. The Olympic Torch Breakfast on 27 July was also memorable. We had more than 70 people for breakfast including at least three policemen. No chance of our misbehaving, even with Buck s Fizz at 8am. We think we have sorted out the technical difficulties which surrounded the first couple of film nights. In August we showed a collection of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton films. On 20th September it will be the 1953 British comedy, Genevieve. It is a cheerful evening. Come if you have never tried it. On the second and fourth Thursdays of each month we get the pool table out. There is a move afoot to start a pool competition. Reg has teamed up with Twickenham Yacht Club and has been organising joint cruises. A trip to Limehouse Regatta at the end of September will be the last chance to join a club cruise this year. The Commodore s Last Cruise will be to the clubhouse where we ll have a meal together on 6 October. The clubhouse will celebrate its 50th anniversary in September. Phil and Pam have brought in a photograph album showing pictures of its construction in the 1960s. Do look at this on your next visit. Phil is replacing the steps at the front of the club, and we have photographic proof that he helped with the initial construction in the 1960s. That is loyalty! Happy boating and, remember, any photos from the past for the website? Anne Perry Alfresco dining at fish n chips club night In a dismal summer we were lucky one evening to be able to dine outdoors. The weather for our fish n chip club night in July was favourable and it was very pleasant to eat by the river on a warm(ish) summer evening
Cruising Update Well, so far it s been a very disappointing year for boating with the record rainfall and raging torrents on the Thames. During the summer I have been forging close links with our neighbouring Twickenham Yacht Club and took part in one of their day cruises to Lady Lindsey s Lawn, Shepperton, for a pub lunch on a sunny day in June. Whilst Twickenham Yacht Club have an active dinghy sailing section they also have a cruising section with many 20ft to 27ft motor cruisers. Over the years Twickenham YC have formed close links with Greenwich Yacht Club and Brentford Dock Yacht Club and together with our club are keen to organise joint cruises which I am actively encouraging. Having just returned from a holiday in Ireland, after a flurry of s and at very short notice, on the August Bank Holiday weekend Bantry Bay and Southern Comfort joined Twickenham YC on a cruise to Windsor, spending Saturday evening in Windsor Marina and going to the evening races at Windsor Racecourse where after the racing a Jamaican Festival with rum and music was held. A cruise was organised on the River Wey from 7 10 September. This was also a joint venture with Twickenham YC. Low bridges and shallow draught meant this cruise was only suitable for smaller boats. Bantry Bay, Sharodena and Chaswin all took part. A downriver cruise to Limehouse Dock has been organised for the weekend 29 1 October. I have reserved six berths for two nights. This is also a joint cruise with Twickenham YC (who have six boats booked) and with Greenwich YC and Brentford Dock YC invited to take part. On the Saturday evening a meal / one big get together is being arranged in the Cruising Association Clubhouse. Whilst I have approached many members in the clubhouse if you would like to cruise to Limehouse please let me know. Full accounts of the cruises will appear in the next Signal. Now the weather has improved I hope you are all using your boats. If planning a day or weekend cruise why not contact other club members to arrange impromptu cruises. Wishing you all good boating. Reg Jupp Rear Commodore Congratulations, Stephen and Grace! Pam and Phil Chart recently attended the wedding of Stephen and Grace Jones. Bob and Sandra Jones have been members of RYC for many years and Stephen was a cadet member. Bob was a flag officer and Sandra was the minutes secretary. Phil and Gein Phillips RYC was delighted to welcome Gein and Phil back to the clubhouse during their recent visit to the UK from their home in Australia. They are pictured, above centre, with Pam and Bob and Sylvia at Pam and Phillip s new house in Warfield Park. The Annual Photographic Competition Thursday 25 October 2012 being a special Diamond Jubilee / London Olympics summer, we have added an extra category to the competition. I trust you have all been taking pictures despite the poor boating conditions this year. There is still plenty of time to think about your entries. Needless to say there is a prize for each category and Pam and her helpers will provide a meal on the night. There are five categories for entries: Boating, Landscapes, People, Wildlife and Summer 2012 the Diamond Jubilee / London Olympics The pictures need to have been taken since last year s competition. All members who attend are able to vote for their favourite in each category. The pictures may be any size, framed or unframed, although 7 X 5 is preferred. Write your name on the back of each picture which will be kept secret until the voting is over. There is no limit to the number of pictures you can enter. Don t worry about technical perfection, you may have captured a special, amusing or interesting moment. It is always a good fun evening, an opportunity to chat about the pictures, the past year, and pick up a few photographic tips. Pictures may be brought to the clubhouse on the day or posted to me if you are unable to attend. Good luck! Reg Jupp
