Medcruise Welcome It is with great pleasure to welcome you all at the 47th MedCruise General Assembly, a major cruise event in the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas, proudly held in Olbia, a city offering premier cruise destination opportunities. Set up in 1996, MedCruise has grown to a membership of more than 100 ports in 20 countries and 30 associate members, representing the majority of passenger movements and cruise calls in the region. In 2014 MedCruise membership welcomed 25,8 million cruise passenger movements and more than cruise calls, reconfirming that the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas is a most dynamic region having all the potential to grow further. The 47th MedCruise General Assembly is a great opportunity for our members to discuss how to further benefit from this growth. MedCruise members will have the chance to identify how to successfully respond to the challenges of cruise activities expansion, adapting operational practices and updating infrastructures and services required. We will also have the opportunity to discuss, both in plenary and during B2B meetings and dedicated workshops, with our esteemed guests on how the port industry can best advance sustainable cruise activities in the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas. I invite you all to enjoy the sessions, contribute to the debate, benefit from the networking opportunities, and enjoy the hospitality of the wonderful city of Olbia and the entire region of Sardinia. 10 Three doorways to the world. Kissed by sun, caressed by sea waves. Surrounded by a unique, unspoiled natural landscape. Sailors points of arrival and departure over the centuries, the beginning of ancient civilizations. Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans: they all left their mark on the territory. This History is still alive with well-preserved artifacts and archeological sites, fully accessible to everyone interested in discovering our roots. Olbia, Golfo Aranci and Porto Torres have joined the chief ports of call of the Mediterranean Sea; three ports receiving over six million passengers, with more visitors every year. Olbia Located at the end of a gulf which is well protected from wind and inclement weather, the natural port of Olbia has been an important harbor since the Nuragic period. Vestiges of that period have been found in the territory, an area rich in fertile soils, pastures and above all a population particularly adept at foreign relations. Despite frequent visits by the Greeks during a short period of time during the 7th Century b.c. and what the origin of its name may suggest (Ολβιος / Olbiòs / felice), according to latest findings Punics are believed to be the first to leave a mark of a proper urban settlement, which can be dated between the 5th and the 4th Century b.c. When Romans occupied Sardinia in 238 b.c., the town became a trading centre as well as an important military naval base. It was connected to the rest of the Island through three important main roads used both by legionaries and merchants carrying goods. At that time, Olbia was the starting point for ships loaded with goods going to the capital city. During the rule of Rome (238 b.c. 455 a.c.) Olbia continued to be the crux of a thick commercial network with Africa, Balearic Islands, Spain, Campania and Sicily. There are numerous remains from this long period, mostly contained within the port area. In 1999, during excavation works aimed at building a tunnel on the seafront, many Roman ships and the ruins of ancient harbor infrastructure were found, enabling historians to reconstruct the port activity from its inception up to 1700 a.c. Port Facilities Olbia The Port of Olbia, today known best as the main doorway to Sardinia, is one of the most important cruise and ferry port of the Mediterranean area with 4 million passengers every year, and is also a significant trading port with nearly 6 million tons of goods. The port is physically divided into three areas: Cocciani Port, in the industrial area of the town; Internal Port, solely used for pleasure boating, where one still can see the ancient Roman Port; and Isola Bianca s wharf, provided with 9 docks for Ro-Ro ships transporting passengers with cars and industrial vehicles. Isola Bianca s Wharf Isola Bianca consists of an artificially filled land-strip, provided with 10 docks (5 side mooring points and 3 mooring points by the stem) and a dock for cruise ships only. These moorings are mainly intended for Ro-Ro ferries transporting passengers and industrial vehicles to the peninsula and for cruise ships. The land- strip is composed of several parking areas reserved for business vehicles and semitrailers, square meters overall. The Maritime Station is inside this port area and measures square meters. The facility is designed to receive up to passengers a day, but it can comfortably welcome a maximum passengers a day. Inside Maritime Stations, there is an expansive area where passengers waiting to embark can stay, a restaurant and snack bar, branch offices of several local Bodies and Authorities, as well as a first-aid station.

Golfo Aranci Golfo Aranci is a typical quaint Sardinian town that separated from Olbia to become an independent municipality in Its name, Golfo Aranci, is subject to several hypothesis: it may come from a printing error on the Gallurese toponym Golfu di li Ranci (Crabs gulf ). In prehistory Golfo Aranci s territory was already occupied and remained occupied over the centuries until it was completely abandoned during the Aragonese domination. The holy well of Milis close to the railway station, confirms human presence since ancient times. The construction of a port, railway and relative goods yard sparked development, and when Costa Smeralda was founded, Golfo Aranci was galvanized, thanks to the passenger service to the port by ferries belonging first to Italian State Railways and then to Sardinia Ferries. Port of Golfo Aranci The Port of Golfo Aranci is located just north of Olbia, and is slightly closer to the Italian peninsula in terms of navigation time. The port welcomes about one million passengers annually, and can accommodate larger tonnage ships with deep water access and expeditious passenger embarkation and disembarkation services. The Maritime Station is outfitted with office space and welcoming services. Golfo Aranci port is also a major hub for Italian State Railways, due to the connection to sea routes by State Railways ferries. Lastly, Golfo Aranci port offers recreational fishing opportunities as well as other leisure activities

Costa Smeralda In March 1962 a small group of international financiers, headed by Prince Karim Aga Khan, founded the Consorzio Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast Consortium) with the aim of developing tourism on the coast. A series of high quality resorts were gradually built and this, together with the beauty of the area, led Porto Cervo and Costa Smeralda to turn into one of the top exclusive destinations of international luxury tourism. Costa Smeralda s territory covers more than 80 Kilometers of coastline, with a wide, well irrigated hinterland of rolling granite hills interspersed with Maquis and woods of wild olive trees. Along the coast there are several internationally renowned resorts that cater to exclusive clientele, with the luxurious Porto Cervo as the jewel in the crown. Porto Torres Located on a calcareous promontory in the northern coast of Sardinia, facing the Gulf of Asinara, PortoTorres is one of the main ports connecting Sardinia to the Italian peninsula and, in Summer, to France. Humans first settled here during prehistorical times, evidenced by the remains of necropolis found in the area (Su Crucifissu Mannu, Li Lioni, Campu Perdu in the Asinara surroundings). A unique prenuragic altar was discovered on Monte d Accoddi, believed to be a ceremonial tribute to the spirit of fertility. During the Phoenician-Punic age the area was frequented by Phoenician traders and, later, by Carthaginians, as evidenced by archeological findings in the area: a Punic stele made of trachytic tuff adorned with a central human figure, a Greek (Ionic) cup dating back to the 6th Century b.c., two lekithoi (vessels for oils and perfumes), a Greek oil lamp, a Punic razor and other ceramic rests. During the Roman domination it became Colonia Iulia of Turris Libisonis, founded by Julius Caesar in 46 b.c. during his stay in Sardinia, or by Ottaviano through his legate Marco Lurio, who was on the island between 42 and 40 b.c. The main activities in Turris Libisonis were sailing and fishing. Several monuments devoted to Bastet the Egyptian Goddess represented by a cat s head and woman s chest have been discovered.

Porto Torres and its Monuments The Antiquarium of Porto Torres (a renowned archaeological museum), built between 1971 and 1973 and opened in 1984, is close to the Archaeological site of Turris Libissonis. Its exhibitions highlight the Roman period in Turris - the town built in the second half of the 1st century B.C. near the port, and come entirely from the excavations of the local Roman Archaeological area. The museum is divided in two sections: statuary and architectural sculptures of the worship buildings and daily materials collected in public buildings, private houses (lat. domus ) and graves. On the ground floor architectural components, altars, headless judges glorifying statues dated back to I-II century A.C are displayed. Among them, the cylindrical marble altar dedicated to Bubastis, the eastern cat-headed goddess, with an inscription dating this finding back to the III-V century A.D. On the first floor there are artifacts from tabernae, baths and other private buildings, kitchen and table pottery most likely of African origins, lights, lead or terracotta water pipes. Remains from a necropolis include Capuchin graves as well as metal and ceramic tools. These exhibitions demonstrate the strong relationship between the middle/eastern Mediterranean basin and Aegean regions. The archeological site is situated near the museum and includes baths and houses featuring multicolored mosaics. After a visit to the museum, guests can enjoy a visit to the Basilica of San Gavino, a magnificent and unique example of Romanesque style in Sardinia that features opposite apses (oriented eastwards and westwards).

Port of Porto Torres The port of Porto Torres is the second port of Sardinia, in terms of passengers, and the first in terms of goods quantity. By now, it is considered as a single facility composed of: public port (intended for Ro-Ro ferries transporting passengers and goods as well as for pleasure boating), the industrial port. The civic port, partly located on the ancient medieval port (the Roman port was built on the mouth of the river Riu Mannu), was recently renovated and currently consists of the west pier (with 3 Ro-Ro ferries hauling points measuring 200 meters), the cableway s dock with a Ro-Ro hauling point, the Segni/customs dock (more than 300 meters in length) reserved for cruise ships, the deep water dock with Ro-Ro hauling point. In the large square in front of the cableway there is the Port Medical Office and Fish Market (under construction). In front of the Harbor Master s office there is a recreational marina with roughly 400 berths in docks and pontoons. The industrial port is located outside of town and consists of two large passenger vessel berths of 298 and 330 meters.

Alghero Alghero is the biggest and most important centre in the province of Sassari, and is famous for its delightful fishing harbour. According to historians this town was settled in the first half of the 11th century when the important Doria family from Genoa fortified a fishing village along the north western coast of Sardinia, creating a strategic landing point. It was called L Aleguerium due to the big quantities of seaweed left on the shores by strong currents. This name is supported by documentary evidence of the Doria family and comes from Medieval-Latin language (S Alighera in Sar- dinian dialect and l Alguer in Catalan dialect). Thanks to its geographical position, Alghero played a very important trading role in the Mediterranean, and was attacked frequently by Pisan and Aragonese ships. The town was ruled by Genoa until 1353, when and alliance of Catalan Aragonese and Venetian forces defeated the Genoese admiral Antonio Grimaldi in a naval battle just off Porto Conte. In November 1354 Pietro IV of Aragon, known as Il Cerimonioso or Punyalet forced Sardinian and Ligurian people to emigrate in order to populate Alghero with Catalans. At the same time, the town became part of the Kingdom of Aragon and was subject to Catalan and Spanish rule for four centuries. Alghero preserves its Catalan - Aragonese period features to this day, evidenced by churches, architecture and building techniques, as well as the Catalan language often heard within the walls.
