2 Dear Yale Traveler Portugal s Douro River Valley, the birthplace of Port wine, has a tradition of viticulture stretching back 2,000 years. As a professor of Portuguese-language literature, I look forward to introducing you to some of the country s great writers especially the novelist Eça de Queiroz and the mysterious poet Fernando Pessoa. I will be traveling with my wife, Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, a professor of Portuguese at Wesleyan University who has taught Portuguese for Yale Summer sessions for 15 years. We will be joined by Nadine Orenstein, a curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Begin in Porto with a private lunch at the Serralves Foundation, home to a fine collection of contemporary art. Then embark AmaVida for a seven-night cruise. Admire Baroque architecture and Flemish tapestries in Lamego and spend a day in UNESCO-listed Salamanca, Spain. Stroll in the hilltop village of Castelo Rodrigo and enjoy exclusive dinners and tastings at family-owned wine estates and an ancient monastery. Return to Porto for a private concert at Casa da Música, designed by Rem Koolhaas. David Jackson Kenneth David Jackson is a professor of Portuguese-language literature at Yale University. He specializes in Portuguese and Brazilian literatures, modernist movements in literature and other arts, Portuguese literature and culture in Asia, poetry, music, and ethnography. His publications include A Hidden Presence: 500 Years of Portuguese Culture in India and Sri Lanka (Macau, 1995); Sing Without Shame (Amsterdam & Macau, 1990; Canta sen Vargonya, Macau, 1996); Builders of the Oceans (Lisbon, EXPO, 1998); three CDs in the series The Journey of Sounds (Lisbon, 1998); two volumes on the Brazilian and Portuguese avant-garde movements, A Vanguarda Literária no Brasil (Frankfurt, Vervuert, 1998) and As Primeiras Vanguardas em Portugal (Madrid, Iberoamericana, 2003); a CD-ROM, Luís de Camões and the First Edition of The Lusiads, 1572, and a recent book on the literature of empire.
