4 Exploring Europe by River with Noble Caledonia Exploring Europe by river vessel is appreciate the subtle changes in architecture and reflect on the to our minds simply the most many ways that the river you are travelling along has influenced the comfortable means possible. course of history. There is something rather special about sitting on deck or in a Nothing can prepare you for the peace and beauty of a river cruise. luxuriously appointed room and To relax on deck with a good book whilst the world floats by is a watching the world pass by. Rivers fortifying experience. The ever-changing scenery and the immediate and canals are by their very nature so much more interesting than accessibility of an area so steeped in history will probably result in road or trackside, and the gentle speed of the vessel allows you to very few pages being read as the river unfolds before you. Such catch the essence and atmosphere of the region. A journey by river, vistas cannot be appreciated from any other means of transport, the unlike travel by road or rail, allows you to absorb the landscape, stately pace and quietness of the vessel allows you to be at one with your surroundings. In a world where places seem to be becoming ever more crowded, the river offers a respite and the opportunity to enjoy the landscape without the constant background hum of traffic. It also allows you the opportunity to moor in the heart of cities and towns and stroll from the vessel into the centre without the need to always resort to road transportation. Every day holds something new, whether it be the cultural delights of the cities, the vast skies over the Hungarian Plains, the lush wetlands of the Danube delta, the enchanting vine covered landscape of the Wachau valley or the medieval villages and towns that pepper the Danube Valley in Austria and Bavaria. For the past ten years we have been working in partnership with our Vienna based agents Lloyd Touristik, honing our shore excursion programmes to ensure that your time ashore is an informative, inspiring, comfortable and well balanced experience. Rivers seem made for the traveller who wants to see the world close up. Not only do you float tranquilly through an ever-changing and fascinating landscape, you become part of it. River cruises allow you to blend in with Nature s watery highways that wend their way from mountains and gorges through forests and pasture-land in their eternal flow towards the sea, linking picturesque villages, historic towns and legendary cities. Yet always you are in supreme comfort, with all you could want aboard an intimate and well-appointed floating hotel. Advantages of River Cruising The advantages of river travel are enormous. For a start, you are never out of sight of land. The countryside simply unfolds around you, a constant source of fascination as you relax on the sundeck or gaze out through panoramic windows. There are no lengthy days at sea spent amongst thousands of other passengers, instead our vessel, the MS Johann Strauss, accommodates only 160 passengers and offers an atmosphere akin to a country house hotel. Johann Strauss moored at Esztergom Another great joy of river travel is that you only have to unpack once. You may well have travelled through three or four countries, visited a number of capitals, towns and villages and cruised through large Page

5 Main Foyer swathes of picturesque countryside and all the while your floating hotel has travelled with you with every detail taken care of, from formalities of border crossings to sumptuous meals and information on what to see and do in the next town. Once you have unpacked, you are there for the duration of the trip, and can relax and enjoy your surroundings. No checking in and out of hotels and none of the general malaise that grips most who undertake long coach tours. River cruising avoids all the tedium of train and coach journeys you can stretch your legs and enjoy refreshments whenever you wish while still being delivered into a fascinating port almost every day, often in their very heart. Your entire river journey is spent surrounded by all the facilities of a first-class hotel, with space to allow you to chat with new friends or spend quiet time alone. If you have not tried a river cruise before, you may have some reservations about the vessel. There was a time when river cruising meant narrow boats, tiny cabins and limited space. Today, this could not be further from the truth. The MS Johann Strauss is remarkably roomy with hotel room style and size cabins, luxuriously appointed and spacious public areas, single sitting dining and vast areas of observation and sun decks. Know what you are buying The majority of vessels on European Rivers are sold in international markets with most owners and operators being based in America, Australia or Continental Europe, many of whom have only recently entered the river cruising market. Their onboard service, cuisine and shore excursions are therefore designed to have a broad appeal to a diverse mix of nationalites. Established in 1991, Noble Caledonia is fully bonded, family owned and British based. We only market our trips in the UK and our itineraries, shore excursions, food and service are therefore specifically designed for our own market. So, unlike many other vessels, English is the only language used on board and ashore. In addition, the shore programmes and guest speaker presentations are designed to have particular appeal for our travellers, offering a more in-depth and relevant perspective than is possible when the audience is a mix of nationalities brought together on a river vessel. Comparing Prices ALL GRATUITIES ARE INCLUDED On most other river vessels, gratuities are not included and the recommended daily level is 10 per person per day. However, aboard the MS Johann Strauss you do not have to worry about tips as we have included them in the price of your holiday. So, for instance on a 14 night cruise the usual tips will amount to approximately 250 per couple. In addition we tip all our guides and drivers along the way, thereby taking away the hassle of always having to remember to have some Euro small change with you. Most other companies expect you to tip on each excursion as you go along. Reception DRINKS WITH DINNER For the 2011 season we are including house wine, beer or soft drinks with your evening meal. This is another special arrangement to make your trip all the more enjoyable. By including all gratuities and drinks with dinner we have gone one step further than most other river companies. Our prices, even with these extra inclusions still compare favourably and when you consider that in addition our trips also include a guest speaker who will provide informative evening talks and shore excursions, we believe our prices, like our trips are second to none. Value for Money When you book a river cruise with Noble Caledonia, you can be assured of value for money with all this included in your cruise price: Reservations handled by an experienced, professional travel consultant with first-hand knowledge of the vessel Economy class scheduled air travel from London (or the option of train travel or regional airports for some itineraries) Airport assistance at check-in (London airports only) Accommodation aboard the first-class MS Johann Strauss in a comfortable well-appointed cabin with outside view and en-suite facilities All meals aboard the vessel including: Early riser pastries English buffet breakfast Lunch consisting of buffet and served dishes Afternoon tea Late evening snacks Four course dinner with house wine, beer or soft drinks Complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day Welcome and Farewell Gala Dinner Shore excursions including entrance fees and tips to guides and drivers English-speaking local guides Services of a Cruise Director and efficient onboard staff Guest speaker(s) Detailed pre-departure information All gratuities Transfers Port taxes Airport taxes Page 5

6 MS Johann Strauss Sun Deck A Very Special River Vessel Due to the enormous demand we have experienced over the past few years for river cruising, we now have our own vessel which we operate on the major rivers that cross Europe from the North Sea to the Black Sea. Having the vessel under our complete control allows us to plan the itineraries that are best suited for our clients and also provide the service which we know our passengers enjoy. We have been most fortunate in acquiring one of the best vessels afloat in Europe today. Built in 2004, the four-star MS Johann Strauss is a 90 cabin vessel built to the highest specifications. Although the vessel can carry a maximum of 180 passengers, we limit passenger numbers to a maximum of 160. One of her many fine features is the number of French balcony cabins. There are over 60 such cabins with a sliding glass door. From these cabins, which are located on the Opera and Waltz decks, the views are spectacular and for many the opportunity to open the door to fresh air is a great bonus. All cabins are large, being 170 square feet, and compare favourably with hotel rooms or the better cabins on large ships. They are well planned and smartly furnished in light woods and restful colours. Facilities include individually controlled heating and air conditioning, television, telephone, minibar, safe, hairdryer, radio and a well appointed bathroom with shower and toilet. Bathroom Polka Deck Cabin Another well designed feature of the vessel is the positioning of the restaurant, lounge, bar and café on the top deck. These public areas also have floor to ceiling windows, affording excellent views as you dine or relax. On board you will also find a fitness centre with a sauna, whirlpool and gymnasium equipment. 8 COMMENTS FROM PAST PASSENGERS REGARDING THE MS JOHANN STRAUSS We thought that MS Johann Strauss was probably the best river ship that we have been on and we would certainly go aboard again in the future.they were the best organised excursions that we have ever experienced and a pleasure to go on them as we were not even crammed into coaches. Margaret & Mike Horton We have just returned from Music on the Danube and it is to your credit that you have a remarkable relationship between your staff and the captain and crew of the MS Johann Strauss. We saw nothing but a seamless relationship between the two. The Captain was always about the vessel and available to explain all we might ask and the staff in the restaurant were faultless. The food itself was first class. We had a superb holiday, enhanced by our guest speaker, Humphrey Burton. Noble Caledonia should be justifiably proud of all that the company s employees do to enhance your reputation. The Reverend Cannon M. Irving LVO We returned yesterday from a 17-day river cruise aboard the MS Johann Strauss, East of Budapest. I cannot praise too highly! All the staff were splendid, the attention to detail remarkable and the service and quality overall was astonishingly high. Congratulations to the whole team, but especially the cruise director, Cesar and the hotel manager, Stuart Turner, who provided such splendid leadership and an example of hard work and high standards. A. Mason The MS Johann Strauss is a happy ship which makes guest, especially first timers, feel at home. S.Tomlin I returned from the most wonderful week on the Johann Strauss, the crew and staff were lovely, smiley, courteous and helpful. The cabin was spotless. The food was wonderful and there was plenty of choice for everyone. The programme was beautifully put together and the guides very knowledgeable.. P. Plumb We have just returned from the Budapest to Amsterdam cruise onboard the MS Johann Strauss. It was absolutely marvellous. All the crew from the Cruise Director to our chambermaid was so friendly and efficient. J & R Hunter Cruising into Budapest Page Our onboard staff While on board you will be looked after by our team of experienced staff including our Cruise Director, Cesar Perez and our Tour Manager Rodica Ghiserel, both of whom have worked with us for many years. Cesar and Rodica are in daily contact with our London office and the onboard programme is in their capable hands. A daily briefing by the Cruise Director will give you information on the next day s activities and expert, English-speaking local guides provide insider insights into local culture, architecture, history and traditions. And unlike many other operators, each of our river cruises is accompanied by a guest speaker to help you make the most of it all. Our guest speakers provide entertaining and informative talks as you sail along. They will be constantly available for informal chats, sharing their expertise and anecdotes, as well as accompanying you on shore. Our Captain Ever since we chartered the MS Johann Strauss in 2007 we have been fortunate to have the invaluable cooperation of one of the most experienced and friendly Captains sailing the European waterways today. Without compromising the safety of his passengers and his crew, Captain Vasily Mariceanu is well known for boldly going where no other captain has gone before. Master of the MS Johann Strauss since she was commissioned in 2004, Vasily s training dates back more than thirty years when he started his career in the former USSR s Navy. Born in the Danube Delta region, he developed a strong relationship with his surrounding natural world from an early age so it wasn t surprising that after 3 years in the Navy he couldn t resist the call of the Danube, where he has been sailing since His passion for navigation is not limited to the Danube and his knowledge on the Rhine, Main and RMD Canal made him the ideal Captain for our itineraries which stretch from the North Sea to the Black Sea. A note from our Cruise Director and Tour Manager Having been the Cruise Director on board the MS Johann Strauss for the last four years, I can safely say that sailing onboard our river cruise vessel is an experience you will never forget. I can promise you a warm welcome onboard from all our staff and officers, who work hard to ensure that you get the best possible experience from your holiday. The excitement of sailing through changing scenery each day is one of the many reasons why I enjoy my role as Cruise Director so much, as well as meeting so many different and interesting people, from clients to locals. Exploring by river really is the best way to cover distance with minimal effort. I look forward to welcoming you onboard one of our varied itineraries in Cesar Perez, Cruise Director, MS Johann Strauss I have been working as a Tour Manager for many years on various vessels but suddenly, when chance brought me aboard MS Johann Strauss, I felt I had come home in a way. The wonderful thing is that our passengers feel the same as soon as they embark. They immediately get into the spirit of this very well run "happy ship", as vessel is often referred as. They feel the safety and the promise of an excellent Noble Caledonia cruise. The shore excursions are superbly tailored by Noble Caledonia and Lloyd Touristic and they are full of unforgettable moments of learning and discovery. The proof is that on one of the recent cruises we had 42 repeat clients. One can easily become addicted to the Noble Caledonia style of river cruising which is unique in many ways. Hopefully you will feel the same after experiencing a cruise aboard the MS Johann Strauss in Rodica Ghiserel, Tour Manager, MS Johann Strauss

9 Guest Speakers Accompanying each cruise will also be one or two carefully selected guest speakers who will provide an insight into the culture and history of the places you will be visiting and will always be available for informal chats and to share their expertise and knowledge.
