2 Cabin Fever Reliever When it s cold and snowy, there s nothing like planning a great escape. How about the gorgeous coast of Maine, where authentic windjammers will be ready to whisk you away on the safe sailing adventure of a lifetime starting at the end of May. The protected waters of Penobscot Bay offer some of the best sailing in the world as well as quaint harbors where you can spend quiet evenings under a brilliant blanket of stars before nestling into a cozy cabin below decks where crisp sheets and fluffy pillows guarantee a good night s sleep. Every windjammer has its own personality and that s reflected in the cabins. Here s a small sampling of the tucked-in cozy spaces aboard Maine s windjammer fleet. 5 What s New for 2018: Specialty Cruises Schooner American Eagle will offer an 8-day cruise that includes time looking for whales on Stellwagen Bank and Jeffrey Ledge, a national marine sanctuary. The Maine Windjammer Association captains are welcoming guests with all kinds of interests to enjoy sailing along the unforgettable waters of Penobscot Bay. Whether you enjoy offshore sailing adventures out to Stellwagen to catch a glimpse of the whales or prefer a 2-day cruise around the Bay, the windjammers are a perfect way to unplug and rediscover what really matters.

6 Courtesy Sweet Chariot Music Festival Guests aboard Schooner Mary Day enjoy sea shanties during the annual Sweet Chariot Music Festival on Swan's Island. Specialty cruises are a great way to combine special interests while touring Maine s sapphire waters. This year, the American Eagle is hosting cruises that feature photography, watercolors and the Sweet Chariot Music Festival; Angelique has a lighthouse cruise, yoga and wellness, wine cruise and will also be attending the Sweet Chariot Music Festival ; Heritage will attend Boothbay Windjammer Days, tour a few lighthouses and enjoy a photography cruise; Ladona has a new bar craft and cocktails cruise in addition to its wine tasting and music cruises; the Lewis R. French has a kayaking cruise, a lighthouse cruise and will be at the Swan s Island Music Festival; Mary Day has a few cruises specializing in the natural world, lighthouses and photography; the Stephen Taber has a number of wine-tasting cruises, gourmet food cruises as well as lighthouse, photography and music cruises; and finally, the Victory Chimes is offering a Geology-Climate Change cruise, a humorist cruise and steep discounts for birthdays, anniversaries and military. 7 ICYMI: Windjammers Voted #1 Maine Attraction credit: Marc Henauer To all our wonderful Friends of the Fleet who voted for us (sometimes daily!), we thank you! An initial field of 20 nominees selected by a panel of experts last fall was whittled down to 10 winners over a four-week online voting period. Rules allowed the public to vote online for one nominee per day. Second and Third Place winners were awarded to Pemaquid Point Light and Maine Maritime Museum, respectively. The complete list of winners can be found on the USA Today 10Best website. According to Meg Maiden, Marketing Director for the Maine Windjammer Association, The Captains were thrilled and incredibly honored to have received top billing in this 10Best Readers Choice Award, especially with a field of so many wonderful Maine icons like L. L. Bean and Acadia National Park. We thank our guests and friends of the fleet for taking the time to vote for us. 9 Captains in the Spotlight Captaining a Maine Windjammer Association vessel requires skills from many different professions: seafaring skills, of course, but also, electrical, plumbing, woodworking and catering, to name a few. Equally important, these owner-captains are also the hosts, story-tellers, musicians, wedding officiants, historians and wildlife guides. With a new season just a few short months away, we asked four captains what they were looking forward to in Mary Day Captains Barry King and Jen Martin with Nadie, Sawyer and the pups. Captain Barry says, This fall a friend and I went exploring on his power boat for a couple days. We poked into all sorts of coves I haven't been to in a long time or haven't been to with the schooner yet. I am looking forward to anchoring in some new coves this summer and my Captain's Favorites Cruise in August when I will get a chance to take folks to my favorite little out-of-the-way places and maybe even a new favorite that I haven't been to yet.

10 Heritage Captains Doug and Linda Lee We re looking forward to a wonderful 2018 sailing the Great Windship Heritage with all our friends, old and new, aboard and with our experienced crew, Captain Doug said. The first trip is always exciting as it s so wonderful to be back aboard the schooner enjoying the sailing, scenery, sunsets and night sky. Seeing all the other schooners at the Gam is always a thrill. Hope you ll join us as all our trips are special with excellent food, cabins, island visits, with lots of maritime history, DownEast stories and bird watching.

11 Lewis R. French Captains Garth Wells and Jenny Tobin with August and Sanden We look forward to sharing the boat and the bay with our guests and are especially looking forward to our new kayaking trips. We have two this year! As well as our new Father s Day cruise - it s a short two-nighter which will hopefully fit well into people s weekend schedule. Dads who sail with a child are half off!

12 Angelique Captain Dennis Gallant, Candace Kuchinski and Malcolm We are most looking forward to taking our guests to one of our favorite harbors, Burnt Coat Harbor on Swan s Island, for the Sweet Chariot Music Festival. 13 Fresh from the Galley This month, we re sharing completely new, previously unpublished recipes that made their way onto the menus of Maine s windjammers last summer - to the delight of many guests! Yum! Healthy Kale Salad from Schooner Heritage! It s the middle of winter and, to spice things up, we re pleased to present completely new dishes 3 crisp and nutritious salads that delighted guests aboard Maine s windjammers in summer Carla s Broccoli Salad - Courtesy of the Lewis R. French 2 heads of broccoli cut into small florets 1 can mandarin oranges ¾ C dried cranberries ¾ C toasted, salted cashews or sunflower seeds 1 small purple onion diced small (I usually use a 1/2 of onion) ½ lb. bacon crumbled (optional, I did not include this on the boat) Dressing: ¾ C mayonnaise 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar ¼ C sugar (optional, I never used it on the boat) From my mom: I mix all the salad stuff except bacon. Then I mix the dressing and add to the salad. Then I mix in the crumbled bacon. Most recipes say to add the dressing just before serving but I like

14 to let it sit all together. Makes the broccoli a little easier to chew!! Kale Salad - Courtesy of Marsha Stone and Norm Hirschfield via Schooner Heritage Break up the kale into bite-size pieces. Massage as you re doing so. Dressing: Canola or olive oil Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice Maple syrup Salt & pepper Mix all to preferred taste. Add to kale and massage again until a little softened. Add: cranberries, pumpkin seeds or nuts of choice Avocado in bite-size pieces Shredded carrots for garnish and/or in the salad You can add whatever you like that s complimentary. Asparagus Salad - Courtesy of the Lewis R. French Serves 4 1 bunch asparagus 1 handful toasted, crushed hazelnuts 1 tablespoon chopped mint 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tablespoons Sherry vinegar, or white balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon honey 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Parmesan or pecorino shavings salt and pepper to taste optional: add 4 oz cubed/small diced pancetta. Render out fat over low heat until a little crispy, similar to cooking bacon. Reserve fat and use in place of olive oil. Keep warm so that it is easier to whisk into the dressing. 1.Using a vegetable peeler, shave the asparagus lengthwise to create strips. Toss with the hazelnuts and mint. 2. Whisk together lemon juice, vinegar, honey, olive oil or fat, and pancetta, if using. Pour over asparagus and mix with salt and pepper to taste. Shave parmegiano or pecorino on top.
