SCYA invited Commodores from all over Southern California to attend the weekend event and was hosted by Silver Gate Yacht Club overlooking San Diego Harbor.

AKA Hollywood Night. South Shore Yacht Club s nomination committee consisting of Juli King, Dean Russell, Robin Marshall, Andrea Haro, and Tina Simmons are pleased to present the following slate of nominees for Commodore Dean Russell Vice Commodore Michael Schmidt Rear Commodore Chris Haro Treasurer Don Albrecht Secretary Milledge Hart Staff Commodore John Marshall Board Member Kathy Abbott Board Member Linda Brigante Our returning board members Gerry Holleger and Gary Ruud do not need to be voted on as they are fulfilling their 2-year term. Scott Pearson has been appointed to fulfill a 1-year term. I would like to thank Southern California Yachting Association for inviting me to represent our club as your Commodore at the Annual SCYA Commodore s Cruise. SCYA invited Commodores from all over Southern California to attend the weekend event and was hosted by Silver Gate Yacht Club overlooking San Diego Harbor. John and Robin Marshall were also in attendance. John serves as a Director at SCYA. The weekend began with a social hour held Friday Night at Silver Gate. We mingled and toasted with other Commodores and watched the sunset over the San Diego skyline. The next morning, we were treated to a fabulous breakfast complete with Bloody Mary s and Champagne Mimosas. Then a few of us were taken out for a harbor cruise by SGYC s Vice Commodore Terry Van Winkle on his beautiful Sailboat. It was a great sail on a perfect day and Robin took plenty of pictures to prove it. That evening, they put on a Luau dance. The food was wonderful, and we danced the night away to a great band. The Sheets 2 Vice Commodore s Comments by Dean Russell NO PLANS, NO EXPECTATIONS We had intended to take Kuuipo, our Sailtime boat, to Avalon for the Jazzfest.

It was a wild ride to Avalon. As soon as we exited the channel into open water, the roller coaster ride started.

A young woman walked up to the bar, but instead of ordering a drink, leaned over the trash can there. She remained over it for the rest of the crossing. That started it.

2 The Sheets 2 Vice Commodore s Comments by Dean Russell NO PLANS, NO EXPECTATIONS We had intended to take Kuuipo, our Sailtime boat, to Avalon for the Jazzfest. But we changed our plan and took the fast ferry instead so we could have three full days on the island. assembles gravity defying sculptures. What a treat to see this exhibit. Good idea. It was a wild ride to Avalon. As soon as we exited the channel into open water, the roller coaster ride started. You know the feeling when the coaster takes a dip and your stomach feels like it is reaching your mouth? That drew gasps and screams. We had a great table by the bar. The crew sprang into action handing out barf bags to everyone. Oh-oh, the crew ran out of bags and scrambled into the hold for move. There were a lot of seasick passengers. Fortunately it was only a 1 ½ hour crossing. We had talked about going to the after concert party Saturday night. Then we learned that was with a DJ, not live music. At the Casino, we were told that we could buy tickets for the Friday nights shows. The Jazzfest website only offered a full day ticket. A table was available for Friday night and we enjoyed the four hour night performance. That was enough jazz. Saturday morning we decided to go to the Catalina Island Museum. Upon arrival, we discovered that Chihuly had a special artwork exhibition. Chihuly is the artist that makes sculptures using the medium of glass. He uses many colors in the glass and There was an Avalon home tour Saturday afternoon that we were unaware of. We bought tickets and were treated to six very different styles of homes built from the 20 s to brand new. The first was a home that used the cabins from two wooden boats. A very interesting construction. Our friends from the San Diego Yacht Club told us about the lunch at Mount Ada, the Wrigley Mansion. So we added this for our Sunday event. We were not disappointed. Our table was on the corner of the deck with panoramic views of the ocean and harbor. The three course lunch with beer, wine, and views was incredible. Sometime the best plans are not to make too many plans. You never know what surprises await. LOST & FOUND There are items from the beach party still at my house. There are ice chests, a chair, a broad brimmed hat and an XL sweatshirt. I will bring them to the Friday dinner. Please let me know whose these are so I can return them to their rightful owners. 3 The Sheets 3 Social by Jennifer Johns The SSYC Pirates were out to pillage and plunder once again! We had a great turnout for our October Pirate. There were swords, stripes, and many skulls and crossbones. John Marshall, Steve Baker, and all who lost an eye, donned the patch of valor over one eye. It is amazing that no one ended up in Davy Jones Locker by the end of the night. Special guests of the evening were Catalina Island Harbor Master Christina Hall and Santa Catalina Resort Services Marketing Exec, Caitlan Duffy. They gave us an overview of What s going on in Catalina in I see many future SSYC trips in 2018! What Next on the Calendar Put on your glitz and glamor! We are turning on the Hollywood lights. Join us on Friday, November 10th for a Hollywood theme dinner. Our SSYC member and famed photographer, Chris Bliss, will be taking portraits during the event. See you on the red carpet! 26 Miles The Four Preps A group of us managed to get together in Avalon after leaving the mainland from three different ports of call: Long Beach, Newport Beach and Dana Point.

Cruising by Brian King The first act was Greg Adams and the East Bay Soul. Greg Adams was the old guy with gray hair. He was the arranger for the Tower of Power for 20 years.

They blew the roof off the Casino with Brassilicious, Survival of the Hippest, Always Take Two, Roadhouse and Bongo Baby. At the time, we thought how tough it would be to follow this performance!

Vincent Ingala is a young Italian Vintage Hot-Shot who broke into the smooth jazz scene as a teenager with his first big hit, It 4 Perhaps this has been on your bucket list for some time.

Nothing matches the first time you walk up the interior ramps, designed by the same ramp guy who designed the ramps in Chicago s Wrigley Field and walk into the 1929 Avalon Ballroom.

The Avalon cruise in October was conceived to give SSYC members a chance to see the 31 st JazzTrax music festival live for the first time. After arriving in Avalon, we discovered that more Jazz- Trax tickets would be released at 3:00. We were first in line, like we had inside information. We were surprised we could get $70 tickets at a table above the dance floor. We had no idea what to expect, who the performers would be, but after sampling drinks at a few bars, we returned at 6:30 for admission to the 7:00 JazzTrax performance. Is What It Is. He played a great guitar and sang vocals, too! We heard one of his many hits, Baby I m Hooked (Right into Your Love), Can t Stop Now, If I Could Fly, Groovin U and Wish I Was There. We were completely blown away, or maybe it was the multiple bottles of wine we consumed!

5 The Sheets Cruising by Brian King (Continued) On Saturday morning, we toured the new Catalina Island Museum on Metropole Street. Three times larger than the original museum at the base of Casino, it offers so much more history! The highlight was the glass blown sculptures by artist Dale Chihuly displayed until December 10 th. Finally, on Sunday, we experienced lunch at the Wrigley Mansion at the top of Mt. Ada, named after William Wrigley s wife. Her picture is above the fireplace in the main room. We had the largest table on the veranda. We treated ourselves to an unforgettable dining experience at the former Wrigley Mansion. For only $48 per person, they probably lost money on our group as we consumed multiple bottles of champagne and wine! 5 Saturday afternoon we got involved in a charity event benefiting the Avalon Hospital for $60 per person to tour private Avalon residences. The view of Avalon Bay from most of these homes were absolutely breathtaking. Afterwards, we went to dinner at the Blue Water Grill near the large picture of John Wayne wearing very short shorts with the caption, Life is hard. Life is harder if you re stupid. After a couple more Margaritas on Crescent Street, we retrieved our luggage from the hotel and headed back to the docks for our trip back home. 6 The Sheets Racing by John Marshall 6 FALL FINALE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18 TH! The second annual Fall Finale race, sponsored by our Harbor Association, the Association of Orange Coast Yacht Clubs, is scheduled for Saturday, November 18 th. Last year, the inaugural race event was hosted by Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club with 80 sailors attending the After - party. This year, South Shore Yacht Club is the host club for the Fall Finale After- Party! We re planning a $15.00 per person Mexican Buffet, along with a free raffle with raffle prizes offered by the AOCYC officers. Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club will handle the Committee duties for the ocean course off the Newport Beach Pier and American Legion Yacht Club will handle the Committee duties for the Harbor 20s inside Newport Harbor. The Fall Finale Sailing Event celebrates yacht racing in Newport Harbor and Dana Point harbor with an ocean course off Newport Beach for PHRF and Cruising class boats and an inside-the-harbor course for three classes of Harbor 20s. The Notice of is posted on the AOCYC web site at and on the South Shore Yacht Club web site at The entry fee is $40 for the PHRF and Cruising Classes and $35.00 for the Harbor 20 racers.
