Fourth Quarterly Meeting 14th December 2011
WELCOME TO THE BHTA S Fourth Quarterly Meeting To be the national driving force for achieving excellence in Tourism, providing private sector leadership, for a vibrant industry, which fuels the continuous development of our nation.
The Big picture Our major markets are still in disarray & fears of a double-dip recession, including an unthinkable collapse of the Euro has resurfaced among consumers & economic pundits. Global economy already in a job recession sparking global unrest not seen in decades Large scale demonstrations in many cities across America targeting Wall Street fat cats These protests have largely been peaceful compared to street scenes in Athens, Spain and elsewhere in Europe The ILO and The OECD have warned that violence amongst workers is on the rise.
The Big Picture contd. The future of the price of oil cannot be ignored Crude prices surged nearly 36% over the last 2 months OPEC stating that production quotas & prices likely to remain for If so West Texas crude to stay above $100 per barrel and Brent Crude to stay between $110 & $120 as long as there is no return to recession Airlines will continue to look at the profitability of routes, route cuts, costs and fares Cruise lines will also be looking at routes and profitability
The Euro Zone Dangerous political management has led to a crumbling financial system & soaring debt levels Several European nations unable to repay without relief from outside sources like the IMF or a big trading partner like China Germany is almost alone with a healthy economy & balance of payments. Germany has been paying heavily to assist Greece and other nations in Europe to the determent of the electorate who are becoming increasing reluctant to accept that Germany should continue to pay Ruling parties are toppling in elections across Europe with Spain s Socialist the latest victim
UK Many Britons must be applauding the UK s decision to stay out of the Euro zone However, Britain s economy is still directly tied to the success or failure of the common currency & its economic picture has worsened considerably this year. The Governor of the BOE said recently that the euro zone debt crisis was the single biggest risk to the UK The BOE cut its prediction for the balance of 2011 & 2012 to growth of 1% GDP Unemployment rate has risen to 8.3% highest in 15 years. Inflation at the rate of 4.8%
UK contd. Britons still travelling tending to shun long-haul destinations in favour of domestic vacations or places close to home with weak currencies like Croatia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Where increases in arrivals have been realised in a few Caribbean destinations there is evidence of that increase being negated in economic terms by lower average visitor spending. Tour Operators report increase in interest for the All Inclusive and Luxury product. On top of a compromised economy is the addition of the crippling APD Possible stay-at-home impact from the Queen s Diamond Jubilee in June followed by the Summer Olympics in August
US Deadlock in Washington continues to threaten the US economy Despite market meltdown on Wall Street & overseas the US economy continued to grow slowly in 2011 Projection of a suggested 3% growth in GDP for 2012 Consumer still spending retail 5 th monthly increase in October Black Friday Thanksgiving spending quoted as the highest on record However savings are being compromised Vacations are still being taken as a cure for deeper depression!
Canada Canada moved up in global significance this year to #9 in the world based on GDP $ value #14 in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) Canada s success due to 2 main factors - Government s refusal to deregulate its banking industry A more conservative policy re loans. Strong position as a net exporter of commodities oil, natural gas and minerals Canada = 16% of U.S. Total oil imports and 14% natural gas
Canada contd. Unemployment comparatively high 8% - expected to improve in Inflation stays consistently low with a strong currency Canada s outlook is positive as it stays near the top of the G7 economies The Caribbean well served with both scheduled and charter air services
Caribbean lodging Performance Report STR October, year to date Occupancy % ADR $ Rev.PAR $
