2 The meeting was held from 9:30-a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Rafael Herrera Cabral Library of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) < >. For the first time in Dominican soil, the meeting brought together representatives from the IFLA, the Blue Shield, IFLA-LAC and ACURIL members. With the expressed desire to be a proactive part in this effort, each one contributed with ideas to the special success of the meeting. In an initial session ACURIL members present discussed the preliminary document entitled ACURIL in Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti, released in a preliminary version in March. Participants at this first session were: Prof. Carmen Margarita Santos-Corrada, ACURIL President Lic. Dulce María Núñez de Taveras, Director of the Library System, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, Past ACURIL Executive Council Member Lic. Carmen Yris Olivo, Director of the Biblioteca de la Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña, Past ACURIL Executive Council Member Mr. Luis José Medrano, Representative of the Biblioteca Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña, the Fundación Juan Bosch, and ACURIL Personal Member Mrs. Marie-Françoise Bernabe, ACURILPast President/ Also atteding as an IFLA-LAC representative Mrs. Blanca Hodge, ACURIL Past President / Also attending as an IFLA-LAC representative and ACURIL Executive Secretary, Dr. Luisa Vigo- Cepeda, also ACURIL Past President, and Acting Director of the Graduate School of Information Sciences and Technologies of the University of Puerto Rico. This interaction ensured a rich collaborative environment that stimulated the presentation of key concrete ideas, full of enthusiasm, geared to enrich and strengthen the preliminary document of the Campaign. The recommendation to expand the Campaign effort to include Museums was accepted. In so doing a Special Interest Group in ACURIL 2
3 will be presented at the ACURIL XL Conference this year. Colleagues Danielle Mincio and Christopher Jacobs joined in a second session. Mrs. Danielle Mincio, Conservateur des manuscrits, Responsable PAC, de la Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire, de l'universite de Lausane, Canton de Vaud, < >, indicated also being the representative of IFLA Governing Board; and Mr. Christopher Jacobs attended the meeting as Project Officer of the Emergency Management Programme, in representation of the International Council on Archives (ICA) < >, in France. They presented three of their projects being planned in relation to the libraries, archives and museums in Haiti: 1) the rescue and preservation of the documentary patrimony, by phases; 2) the establishment of bookmobiles (following a Mexican model); and, 3) a temporary installation of a university library. ACURIL was able to present some of the activities described in the ACURIL in Solidarity with Libraries and Archives in Haiti Campaign document, that can be found in < >. ACURIL expressed its desire to also join the efforts identified by the IFLA and ICA. Danielle Mincio and Christopher Jacobs recognized the need to have a contact person in the Dominican Republic to assist in different aspects of the activities being planned. ACURIL recommended, and was accepted, to have Mr. Luis José Medrano serve as the contact person. Medrano is the representative of the Pedro Henriquez Ureña National Library and of the Fundación Juan Bosch in Dominican Republic. He is a personal member of ACURIL and has knowledge of the French and Creole languages. The perceptions and input of all present at this meeting, regarding the situation in Haiti in close communication with our Haitian colleagues, specifically Françoise Thybulle (Bibliothèque Nationale d'haiti) and Elizabeth Pierre Louis (FOKAL), were most welcomed. The goal behind, in the minds of all, is that we can join efforts in the planning of this ambicious project in order to bring to forth a collaborative route that will allow, all of us, to contribute effectively to the continued success of our endeavor. 3
4 ACURIL s efforts are geared to serve the needs of the Caribbean region. Our efforts will keep us together to help build up, strengthen and contribute to the sustainability of our communities. Joining efforts with IFLA, ICA and the Blue Shield will make our contribution more effective, and will ensure that the stated goal will be achieved. To create more consciousness, ACURIL has declared June 10 as the Day of Solidarity with Libraries, Archives and Museums in Haiti; and this celebration will take place within the umbrella of ACURIL s XL Conference in República Dominicana, at the InterContinental V Centenario Hotel in Santo Domingo.. Appreciation was expressed to Lic. Dulce María Núñez de Taveras and the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), who hosted this special meeting at ACURIL s request; and to Lic. Carmen Yris Olivo, of the Universidad Nacional Pedro Herniquez Ureña, who also contributed significantly providing the transportation, along with the PUCMM, on both days, Friday and Saturday. ACURIL PROCLAIMS THE DAY IN SOLIDARITY WITH LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUMS OF HAITI To make the information sector, colleagues and friends, and all members of the communities in the Caribbean region, conscious of the critical situation of libraries, archives and museums in Haiti, ACURIL will be launching a special Solidarity Campaign. ACURIL is developing key activities to cater the specific needs of the particular information units, as identified by colleagues Francoise Thybulle (National Library of Haiti)) and Elizabeth Pierre Louis (FOKAL). In particular, ACURIL has designated JUNE 10 as ACURIL s Day in Solidarity with Libraries, Archives and Museums of Haiti. Anyone can JOIN and CARRY OUT a variety of activities during the week, 6-12 June 2010, but specifically on Thursday, JUNE 10. Libraries, archives and museums all over the Caribbean can JOIN and ORGANIZE different activities in their particular areas to call the attention of colleagues, friends and the citizenry about Haiti and STIMULATE their special support. Among other ideas, To JOIN in this effort, all information units can: Prepare exhibits about Haitian history, literature, arts and crafts, music, etc. Invite Haitian artists and writers to talk about their work Collect colorful books and toys for Haitian babies Collect books in French and Creole 4
