We continue along the north-eastern coast, driving along beaches that are so beautiful they almost seem painted with blindingly deep colours and picturesque villages where life seems to proceed at a serene slow pace. 12 Rum punch tasting in a typical bar On-board our minibus, passing by the busy capital of St. John's, we will cross the entire island and the small villages of All Saints and Liberta to arrive, on the southern coast, at Nelson's Dockyard National Park. This 15 hectare park, with great panoramic and natural beauty, upholds significant cultural and maritime heritage (including the only Georgian port in the world). We will make three stops: at Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre in Shirley Heights, at Shirley Heights Lookout and at Nelson's Dockyard. Our first stop will take us to the Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre, a modern visitor's centre built amidst the ruins of an 18th Century English military fortress; inside, using an interesting multimedia presentation, we can discover Antigua's history, from the first settlements right up to independence. Then, the trip will lead us to Shirley Heights Lookout, an exceptional panoramic point from where we can take some photos of the entire southern coast: from the underlying English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour right up to, on clear days, the nearby islands of Montserrat (to the south-east) and Guadeloupe (to the south). Our third stop will be Nelson's Dockyard, the largest historic site on the island which is also the major tourist attraction in Antigua. Selected for its strategic position, this shipyard was made into a British Marine base in After being abandoned in the 19th century, the shipyard was restored in the mid-20th century and renamed "Nelson's Dockyard" in honour of the English Admiral and hero of the Napoleonic wars. At this stage, we have the option to briefly visit the historic arsenal, after which, we will have some free time to explore the numerous original buildings, which have been restored and restructured to their old splendour, which today, house art galleries, boutiques, artisan workshops, museums, restaurants and small hotels. At the end of the trip, before returning to the ship, we will enjoy a refreshing Antiguan rum punch in one of the intimate and picturesque bars of Nelson's Dockyard. All the while, before us an intoxicating panorama which we can but only appreciate. After enjoying a nice lunch using typical products, we will leave the beach in the early afternoon and begin our trip across the spectacular landscape which Antigua's mountains provide, dotted with small, traditional villages. Once we arrive at the splendid southern coast, we will stop at the historic fortification of Shirley Heights, where we will visit the remains of an 18th Century English military complex which stands on the top of a hill, at 150 metres above sea level. On particularly clear days, it is possible to glimpse the nearby islands of Guadeloupe and Montserrat. There will also be strategic stops to learn about the local flora and fauna. Once back on the motorboat, we move to reach Bird Island. At Bird Island you can enjoy white sandy beaches, take the (8 minute) hike to the top on a rocky trail and photograph the panoramic views and look for seasonal birds and small wildlife. Snorkelling enthusiasts or beginners can follow the instructors for an unforgettable underwater experience near a cliff, reached by motorboat. The Caribbean is an excellent place to snorkel thanks to the crystal-clear water, the good condition of corals and the extremely rich underwater life: a truly thrilling experience. Then we will sail towards Antigua, to a dreamlike beach, just one of the many magical beaches in this area. Here, we can decide to simply spend time*relaxing, sunbathing, taking a nice stroll or **swimming*. All the while, before us an intoxicating panorama which we can but only appreciate. 16 Water Activity Recommended to Refreshments included Antigua SNORKELING WITH GIANT RAYS A unique occasion to admire the majestic giant rays at close quarters, snorkeling in their natural habitat. Seaton's* Stingray Snorkeling with giant rays We cross the wild countryside of Antigua by coach in the direction of our base, in the village of Seaton's. Here we meet our local instructor who welcomes us and provides us with the equipment we need for snorkeling. After a short safety briefing and explanation on the use of the equipment we board a boat and we are off for an exciting trip to Stingray (the "ray village"). When we reach our destination, we disembark onto a floating platform* from which we dive into the water. The warm waters between the beach and the coral reef reach a maximum depth of about 1.5 metres; an ideal depth for observing the fantastic creatures that live under the surface of the sea. The transparent waters make this experience even more spectacular. Tragically, the island was devastated by the eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano. Having remained dormant for a long time, in 1995 the 914-metre high volcano erupted, forcing two thirds of the population to abandon the southern part of the island and consequently even the capital, Plymouth. For this reason, there is an "Exclusion Zone that covers the whole south-eastern half of the island extending to about two miles from the coast. In the 80 sq. km of the "Exclusion Zone" all means of transport are prohibited and nobody is allowed to live there. As we walk around the gardens we stop in the various patios and gazebos which are privileged vista points from where we can really appreciate the beauty of the scenery. There are several trails going through the Great House Estate with varying levels of difficulty that are all worth exploring.
