9 Our excursion starts 5 km south of the capital city of St. John's, in the village of Bendals, a place that seems to have been forgotten by time facing the Body Pond panoramic area. This is where the off-road part of our adventure starts: we leave the amazing and rare tropical plants of Body Pond behind and we venture, in our jeep, into the more mountainous area of the island, crossing the luscious tropical forest that greets us with its many species of fruit-trees. Here Nature reigns supreme and presents us with a feast for our eyes. The ever changing scenery continues to amaze us. Indeed, beyond the mountains our route follows the south western coastline with its splendid beaches of fine sand and small fishing villages. This beautiful and touching scenery will leave an indelible mark in our memories. Before returning to the ship, we stop at a spectacular beach for a dip in the ocean. The crystal clear waters of these places are simply amazing. A refreshing swim is the perfect way to seal this emotional experience. 10 Snorkeling with giant rays We cross the wild countryside of Antigua by coach in the direction of our base, in the village of Seaton's. Here we meet our local instructor who welcomes us and provides us with the equipment we need for snorkeling. After a short safety briefing and explanation on the use of the equipment we board a boat and we are off for an exciting trip to Stingray (the "ray village"). When we reach our destination, we disembark onto a floating platform* from which we dive into the water. The warm waters between the beach and the coral reef reach a maximum depth of about 1.5 metres; an ideal depth for observing the fantastic creatures that live under the surface of the sea. The transparent waters make this experience even more spectacular. Guided by a local instructor we learn all about how friendly the rays are as we watch them while they perform their aquatic acrobatics, winding around our legs and at times even coming up to the surface to be stroked and let us take pictures of them. The more daring participants can even feed the rays with small squids following the instructor's indications. A panoramic jeep tour is probably the best way to visit these places, that can be easily reached in our Land Rovers with Bobcat seats and seatbelts, in addition to padded roll bars. We set off from the port in a convoy for an off-road adventure during which we explore the southern and western parts of the island, stopping to admire some of the most beautiful places. We drive along Fig Tree Drive, a narrow winding road that is 8 km long and takes us through the Antigua rainforest twisting between banana trees ("fig" is the Antiguan word for banana) coconut palms and large old mango trees. We stop close to the historical Wallings Dam, originally built in the 19th century where we are reinvigorated by delicious refreshments.afterwards, we cross the rainforest and head for the southern coast, where we can relax on the beach and take a dip in the sea*. The fine sand and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea are the aspects that distinguish this enchanting coastline. The return journey to the port offers an additional opportunity to admire the spectacular landscape and the beautiful Antiguan villages. Pleasant Caribbean music provides the background accompaniment. We head for the northern coast of Antigua to enjoy the spectacular panorama dotted with white sandy beaches and fabulous resorts. Along the way, the members of the crew point out the most beautiful spots on the island: Jumby Bay, the VIP resort, Bird Island, famous for the overwhelming joy of its inhabitants, and the natural arch of Devil's Bridge, where the waves break. The Captain drops anchor at Green Island, with its calm warm waters; here we can disembark and relax on the beautiful secluded beach, dive into the turquoise waters and go snorkeling to discover the secrets of the underwater world. We return on board for lunch accompanied by refreshing drinks in this spectacular setting. When the time comes we weigh anchor and set off for the eastern seaboard, from where we can admire from afar the clifftop villa of the famous musician Eric Clapton. We proceed towards the English Harbour, where we can see Nelson's Dockyard, and we sail along the coast, with its pure white sandy beaches and unspoiled bays. To conclude our excursion we head for the southern coast where we see the breathtaking Pillars of Hercules, spectacular rock formations formed by the erosive action of the sea. Island of Montserrat Soufrière Hills Volcano: puffs of ash, smoke and steam Remains of villages and ruins of Plymouth We leave St. John's by coach and soon reach the heliport. Here we board our helicopter and head for the Island of Montserrat. The name of this place, which was a British colony until 1967, was given by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and derives from a mountain near Barcelona, in Spain, where the Monastery of Montserrat is located. Tragically, the island was devastated by the eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano. Having remained dormant for a long time, in 1995 the 914-metre high volcano erupted, forcing two thirds of the population to abandon the southern part of the island and consequently even the capital, Plymouth. For this reason, there is an "Exclusion Zone that covers the whole south-eastern half of the island extending to about two miles from the coast. In the 80 sq. km of the "Exclusion Zone" all means of transport are prohibited and nobody is allowed to live there. For this reason, the only way to observe close up the puffs of ash, smoke and steam emitted by the volcano is by helicopter. During the flight, with a running commentary from the pilot, we also see the remains of the villages that were devastated by the eruption and the ruins of Plymouth, now uninhabited and partly buried under 12 metres of ash. This is undoubtedly a rare PAGE 13

14 and very moving experience. Finding yourself in front of such dramatic evidence of the force of Nature cannot fail to amaze you and make you reflect. This excursion does not include a guide. We skim over the crystal clear waters of the west coast, passing by Five Islands village to the south-west of the capital which owes its name to the five rocks just off the coast, Jolly Harbour, the stunning Cades Reef and Rendezvous Bay, a natural breathtaking paradise. Before us stretches a panorama of the super yachts anchored in Falmouth Harbour, followed by the historic English Harbour and Shirley Heights* lookout. The tour continues going past the famous Half Moon Bay and Green Island, with its white sand, embracing the northern coast and the surrounding islands. We fly over Great Bird Island, Prickly Pear Island, many beaches and beautiful scenery, on to Dickenson Bay and then return to the helipad close to St. John's. 16 A step back in time to discover the history of the fascinating island of Antigua, with its picturesque villages and historic buildings followed by a moment to relax on one of the island's 365 beaches as a fitting end to the excursion. All Saints Liberta Falmouth Nelson's Dockyard Dow's Hill Multimedia Centre Relax on the beach Our interesting tour takes us through three villages for a glimpse of some of the more fascinating pages of Antigua's history: All Saints, the site of the first sugar plantation on the island which was called Betty's Hope, dates back to 1674, Liberta, founded in 1835 following the emancipation of slaves who were brought to the island to work on the sugar cane plantations, and Falmouth where we find Nelson's Dockyard National Park. Nelson's Dockyard is one of the most important stops on our tour. Chosen because of its strategic position, this shipyard was built as a base for the British Navy in After being abandoned in the 19th century, the shipyard was restored in the mid- 20th century and renamed "Nelson's Dockyard" in honour of the English Admiral and hero of the Napoleonic wars. Here we visit the naval shipyard and the dockyard accompanied by a National Park guide.
