Notes for Helen Ormond "Ellen" One day, I stumbled upon a Newspaper abstract from 1889 indicated that Mrs. William Dooley had fallen while hanging curtains and had broken her leg. She was over 70 at the time. She lived another 10 years! Obituary - BRAS D'OR GAZETTE March 1, 1899 p.2 Notes for William Dooley Oral history indicates that William was from County Cork. Supposedly he landed in Cape Breton Island, at Cape Breton (a village on the North Eastern Shore of the island). Supposedly, he made his way to North Sydney (North Bar) where he was greeted by the Ormonds, who had emigrated from Lismore, Waterford County. If he knew the family before he left Ireland, it would mean that he probably lived south of Lismore such as Youghal, Mitchelstown, or one of the Cork Villages along the Blackwater River like Glendine. At various times, he was a grocer and a laborer.

Her death certificate of August 26, 1932 lists her as Hanora C living at St. Theresa's Retreat 300 Barrington in Halifax. The informant was Sister Lorreta Tobin, her daughter. Obituary was in the Antigonish CASKET. Date of death in the Casket was August 26, St. Joseph Parish record indicates that she died on November 13, I used the death certificate and the Casket date! Notes for Richard Francis Tobin Lived at 52 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Seems that he was based in Channel Newfoundland, St. Pierre, and North Sydney. 8 8 Vessel, then Rescued by Life Lines. North Sydney, Nova Scotia, May 8, 1895: Capt. R.H. Tobin of North Sydney, has arrived home, having lost his schooner, the Freddie Walter, on the Penguin Islands, which consist of 22 rocks about ten miles from the rock bound coast, where many a good ship and crew have met their fate. Capt. Tobin left St. Pierre on the 19th ult. for this port in ballast. The following Tuesday morning, a heavy breeze from the southwest came up. The pumps got choked. They headed for Burgo. She was then about 80 miles from St. Pierre. The weather became too thick to make Burgo; wore ship again; the pumps being now free, and the course shaped for Miquelon. The wind veered southerly, increasing to a gale, the foresail was carried away and the storm trisail was bent in its stead. The foresail was repaired and set and the captain went down in his cabin to take his position. While examining his charts, he heard his crew shout "breakers". He at once rushed on deck and grabbed the helm and put it to port. He was just a minute too late, for the vessel struck on the western end of the rocks. The Captain shouted to stand by the ship. One poor fellow, Thomas Power of Placentia Nfld. jumped for the rock and was not seen afterwards. Two others jumped and landed safely on the rock. The vessel lurched off the rock and began to sink rapidly, and about half a mile further down a break was seen in the rocks into which she was driven. She sank to the sheer poles, and the captain and another man took to the rigging, where they remained for forty-eight hours. She struck at a. m. on Tuesday the 23rd ult. The first night they were in the rigging, the bottom was knocked out of the vessel. Some fishing boats took the men off with difficulty. If the wind had not subsided the men on the rock would have been washed away. As it was they were hauled through the water to the fishing boats with the aid of life lines and were greatly exhausted. Notes for William Richard Tobin "WR" According to my aunt May Tobin (aka WR) was born in Argentia, Newfoundland. As she told it, her grandparents were returning via their boat to their home in Channel from visiting family in eastern Newfoundland when great grandmother went into labor. They landed in Argentia Newfoundland where my Aunt May claimed that WR was born.

22 22 Grandfather listed Channel as his birthplace on official documents. I have a copy of his Baptismal Certificate from Channel. WR and his sister Mary Elizabeth were the only children born in Newfoundland. The rest of the children were born in North Sydney. WR attended Dalhousie until he was 20. I think he left to join the service and I think that he was a veteran of the Boer War in South Africa and maybe even saw action in South Africa. (I can't confirm it!) His grave in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Sydney has a marker for the United Empire Service League which indicates that he spent some time in the service. After leaving Dalhousie he read for the Bar. On October 5, 1893, the CASKET reported that he passed his Law Exams. On July 23, 1895, the CASKET reported that he took the FINAL Law Exams. On Sept. 19, 1895, the CASKET reported that he passed the FINAL Law Exams. On October 24, 1895, the CASKET reported that he was admitted to the Bar on October 17, In 1896, he advertised that he was a Barrister - Solicitor - Attorney at Law - Conveyancer practicing across from the Hotel Vendome in North Sydney. In North Sydney, he was a Councilor. Sometime about , he moved to Glace Bay. I'm speculating that Grandfather wanted to move on because Glace Bay was starting to boom, because he and his wife had lost their first child, a son (buried in Old St. Joseph's) and because his father died about In 1902, he was a member of the Glace Bay Rugby Team, the championship team. He was an Alderman in Glace Bay. He was the town solicitor. He was a Commissioner (an appointed member) of the Glace Bay School Board.

23 23 In 1907, he was visiting his mother at her Archbold S tnorth Sydney home when he noticed fire coming from St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Convent St. According to my aunt, grandfather raced to the church and saved the sacred vessels. Mother and my aunt always thought that his death in 1922 was sudden. In reality, he died of a heart condition that had been diagnosed about a year before. He was stricken in the Court Room and taken to his home (on the way to St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay). He died before he reached the hospital. Interestingly, the Death Certificate and Dooley Funeral Home records indicate that Grandfather was born in North Sydney in March (The Dooley record was the source of the Death Certificate.) As a result of an allergic reaction to the inoculation, May was left almost totally visually impaired. Within ten years, she lost both parents while being educated at Mount Saint Vincent in Halifax. Financial difficulties due to the death of her father, forced May to leave the Mount and live at the School for the Blind in Halifax. From there, she completed her Normal School education. She taught French at the School for the Blind for over 40 years. She completed her career in Middle Musquoduobit. May established a three year cycle of: a summer of school, a summer with my family, a summer of travel to wonderful places - the world capitals in Europe, the shrines in Europe, shrines in Ireland, major

I was so fluent that I took 2 years of High School French in the same year. Her Christmases and other holidays were normally spent either with Ted and Nonie Lohnes or with the MacIntyres in Halifax. (Nonie was a Tobin first cousin and they traveled together after Ted died.) When she finally retired after 50 years of teaching, she retired with her Normal School Certificate, a Bachelors, and enough credits for a Masters. Not long after she retired, she was unable to read. She had readers and writers - she still corresponded with a legion of friends. At my urging, she wrote the oral history on both of my parents' families. May was the best family genealogist that I have ever been exposed to. Her oral histories were amazingly accurate. After she retired from teaching, she retired to St. Patrick's Manor in Halifax. In 1926, because of the miner's strike, Mom left Glace Bay to work in Boston for the summer-time. She stayed in Boston. Mom met Leo Petrie, from Dominion, married him and had 5 pregnancies. In 1936, the Petrie family moved to Dedham where she raised her 3 sons. On January 16, she was naturalized under the name of Lorretta Elizabeth Petrie. In 1946, after I started school, Mom returned to work. She had a variety of jobs. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at Rosen'sHardware. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at North American Aluminum. She was a partner at Atlantic Aluminum. She was a clerk at Tobe Deutchmann Electronics. She was a cashier at Stop and Shop. She was a bookkeeper at the Dedham Transcript and at Ziegler's Market. In addition, she was a substitute teacher in the Dedham school system. Also, she demonstrated consumer products for two manufacturers at local retail grocery stores.
