1 Beaver Valley Estates Bulletin March 2016 Happy Easter The Following is an article from the Payson Roundup June 28, Lew King, nationally and locally known radio and television personality, will broadcast his radio network program, Lew king s Variety Show, every Saturday from12:00 until 1:00pm over KTAR and its regional network from Beaver Valley Estates, just nine miles north of Payson. The Lew King Variety Show is the summer replacement for his popular Luncheon in Arizona show, which has been seen and heard over the past nineteen years. The Luncheon show has guested some of the top personalities in show business, including such stars as Dick Van Dyke, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Dana Andrews, Eve Arden, Jane Powell and hundreds of others. This is just one of many stories published in our Beaver Valley Then & Now book. Contact Paul Slotvig for your copy:pdsbvalley@outlook.com 1
2 Albert Masterson Auxiliary President Mike Williamson NREMTP Fire Chief Beaver Valley FD Bingo Saturday, March 5 at 5:30 Please bring your favorite snack & drink Next BVA meeting is on April 9 at 11am Paul Slotvig STOKE UP THE FIRE-WISE pdsbvalley@outlook.com The BVFD is in the midst of grant writing season and have already received a grant through the Arizona State Forestry Division! There is one grant request pending, through FEMA, and a few more in development which will be submitted within the upcoming months. The grant dollars we receive help keep us prepared for structural and wildfire events. They purchase needed equipment, gear, as well as clean up overgrown combustible areas, and provide us with an opportunity to work with local and state agencies to help reduce the catastrophic results a wildfire can cause. The Firewise hours you submit not only help us maintain our Firewise USA status, they help us receive and successfully complete grants. Every hour you record on Firewise logs are counted as an in-kind contribution of labor hours towards our fulfillment in matching and reimbursement grants. The hours are valued at an hourly rate, and BV is credited with the equivalent dollar amount. As you are cleaning up your property this spring remember to record your hours and submit the logs. I raked up a total of four bags of leaves, most of which were trapped under trees and in nooks and crannies the places you don t want combustible materials accumulating. I am recording our hours in order to report them to Firewise USA and to the agencies providing the grants. If you have clean-up projects you have been contemplating, now is the perfect time to do so. Especially during the months of April, May, and June. Please join me on March 19 th - 10 am at the fire station for Firewise Basics. This presentation was developed for residents who have purchased their property since It explains the program from how it started to how we can keep it going. The date for the summer Firewise presentation Firewise Essentials has been changed to July 16 th - 10 am at the fire station. Please remember to complete your Firewise logs and turn them in to the Firewise mailbox at the fire station. If your property is in need of assistance keeping Firewise, please contact me at or pdsbvalley@outlook.com. Thank you for all you do to keep Beaver Valley fire wise. The weather is nice, sunny and breezy. A great time to spend outside! Unfortunately with the increase in the wind the prescribed burn has been postponed. It's unknown when they will resume. While on the fire subject we are putting in for a brush clearing grant. It will involve the river and easements. If anyone would like their land cleaned by a professional tree trimming crew it can be included in this grant for 10%. A full acre was quoted at under $1700. So $170 per acre. I would guess our lots are closer to.10 of an acre but don't quote me on that!if you would like to get onto this grant contact Paul with firewise or myself. Please follow up because this grant has to be submitted 3-4!As some of you know there is a wide variety of respiratory aliments going around. These can be very serious and very contagious. Get lots of sunlight, humidifier, fluids, rest, food, stay warm. And if in need or doubt call 911. As always we can use your help. Come talk to myself or Deputy Chief Graham snd grab an application. Mike Williamson Ann Stoppa President, BVIA stoppa@cox.net It s March already, where did the winter go? It is that time of year again to think about attending the BVIA Annual Meeting. The meeting is being held on Saturday, April 9th at 1:00pm at the Fire Station. This is a great time to connect with your neighbors and find out what is going on in the community. Please watch your mail for your annual packet containing your annual invoice and agenda for the meeting and a voting ballot to gat an idea of what the community wants to do about future road improvements. You must be current on dues in order to vote. I encourage you to attend. We have a unique and wonderful community. I hope to see you there! Ann Stoppa 2

TIPS & TRICKS Keep tape and ribbon handy by using a paper towel holder Cooking With Chef Beaver A Note From The Editor Please send me any news worthy information, meeting updates, important upcoming dates that you would like to share.and photos are a plus. Even a unique story would be fun! I m also trying to put a section aside for the service oriented people that are willing to help our residents when in need painters, plumbers, electricians, Handyman, etc. It s a plus if they are licensed and bonded. If you want to recommend people you trust, I ll need names, phone numbers and addresses for them. I currently have 84 addresses that are receiving our newsletter, so the more information we share with our residents, the better! 4 Busy Beavers The BVFD is con.nuing to burn trimmings and brush clearings for Beaver Valley which helps keep our community safe and Firewise. Even with our reduced rate for the brush dumpster, it was s.ll cos.ng our community over $1,000 a year to have it emp.ed.with the BVFD's help, not only are we able to reinvest those dollars into other needed areas, it provides the BVFD with opportuni.es to train and make sure our equipment is in good working order. The water tanker was nearby and ready to go. The first Saturday of each month, we continue to enjoy the Community Bingo Night at the fire department meeting room at 5:30. You are encouraged to bring any snacks or drinks you like. The Auxiliary will provide hot chocolate & marshmallows. Our latest big winner: Dick Harpster was the cover-all game.winner! Please join us! "A great big thank you from the BVFD Board and FC goes out to all the residents, who shall go unnamed but recognized, that are donating time and money to replace the fire station flag pole. The old one blew down last month. Stop and take a look at it. A very impressive flag pole is being installed that looks like it could remain standing in a tornado! The Fire Chiefs & Board Chairs of BVFD and WPFD met in late February to discuss ways to jointly improve fire prevention, protection and emergency medical services for our constituents. The results of that meeting will be discussed at the regular BVFD Board meeting on March 21. Another grant application is being submitted on March 4. This one goes to the AZ Department of Forestry to reduce the fire hazard in the Beaver Valley area. The BVFD Board thanks Paul Slotvick, Bob Graham and Mike Williamson for their dedicated efforts to obtain fire fighting apparatus, medical emergency equipment and non-property tax funds to make beautiful Beaver Valley safer. Board Chair, Sam Baker" Good Job! 4
